How Do I setup Dual Ethernet (Snow Saucer) base as "repeater" for Extreme

Just migrated from G4 iBook to an MBP. Currently still using my Snow Saucer (Dual Ethernet) airport base station (had to communicate with the Base using the iBook, and manually enter the MAC address of the MBP).
When I go to the trouble of setting up my Airport Extreme to become the base station to which my DSL line is connected, I also want to use the old Saucer as a "repeater" to get a better signal somewhere else.
Where are the instructions for doing this?
Also, I want to know if this may be a bad idea, because IIRC I read that if the Extreme detects a device using the "old" frequency, it will downgrade itself to that frequency, and I will lose the advantage of the Extreme for any devices which could make use of it.

However, extreme and express base stations can be configured to to act as relays and receivers for Graphite and Snow base stations.
With no setting or availability of WDS capability on the dual ethernet device, I fail to see how this would be possible.
Setting this up is fiddly because you have to configure the bridges to connect to an ABS via a MAC address.
And, the ABS must also be configured with the MAC address of the other devices in the WDS, but there are no provisions to do this.
If you want, I'll send you a link for MacTracker, which lists all models and specifications.
It might be possible to run ethernet from one of the other AirPorts, configure the dual ethernet version in "bridge mode" (if possible) and then have it create a wireless network. To be part of the "same" wireless network, it would need to be setup to use the same wireless network name, security and password as the "main" network.

  • Setup Dual Ethernet (Snow) using Windows XP

Is it possible to configure a Dual Ethernet (Snow) Airport base station using only a pc running Windows XP? If so, which version of the admin utility should I use and what's the exact process in order to get things setup?
We've performed a hard-reset but it will not allow us to update the base station using 4.2 for Windows, because there's an error connecting to it via ethernet.
    Thanks!

Thanks. That has helped point us in the right direction. In addition, I found this info particularly helpful in order to set the TCP/IP settings in the Network control panel:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106685
After changing those settings, we were able to configure and update the base station.
However, after putting the TCP/IP settings back the way they were (obtain IP automatically instead of manually), the PC connected via the LAN port and the wireless can't connect to the internet at all. The base settings reveal that it's using an IP address starting with 169.xxx.xxx.xxx which tells me it can't get a real IP from the cable modem. Unplugging the cable modem, base station, restarting, etc. aren't doing the trick. Oh so close. I'll keep you posted unless you have any further suggestions.

This is the Apple Support page for Boot Camp:
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
No mention anywhere of Lion, of 4.0/4.01
In the past, 10.6.6+ was suppose to - and sometimes did - provide for a download drivers from within Boot Camp Assistant program, in order to save them to flash or such (that should be about 1GB, too large for CD). Some macs req'd a USB-DVD or other driver that was needed pre-install of Winidows
You don't install Apple drivers until after Windows is installed otherwise,
It is possible for me, with a tower, to run w/o needing any drivers from Apple. But with laptops, mini, you do need some drivers from Apple for graphics, internet, wireless, SMC support.
And right now, loading any Apple support Tech Note articles is very very slow.
People keep asking why Apple can't post 3.0 or 4.0 like they do the updates. Only logic is to force t he download from inside OS X or from an OS X DVD. Otherwise would be here, and avoid all the trouble. they aren't of use on a PC, and any PC motherboard vendor does post their support software for download.

  • Power for dual ethernet/snow airport

I have an old AirPort dual ethernet which I would like to lend to a friend who just got a MacBook but is currently using dial-up internet. The problem is that in it getting down off the shelf, I found three different power bricks, one 5V and two 12V. One of the two 12V power bricks has a light grey wire, which would be a better color match than the others. That is the only hint as none say "Apple."
What are the power requirements of this old AirPort?

Sorry if my explanation of the problem was not clear, but the HD's are fine. I have checked them using fsck, disk warrior, TechTool Pro. they are fine. The drives are not showing up at all, and SATA shows "no information" Once in a while SATA will start working again briefly, then just GO AWAY! And the PCI SATA card I installed acts the same way. I am leaving one HD in the logicboard and one in the PCI card and they both go away (not the whole PCI card, just the HD).
    Thanks for the reply.
OK, since you are also having things go away with the PCI SATA controller, this could be a problem with either (a) PCI-X bridge or (b) the U3 Memory controller, as they are the two things in the chain between the CPU and where you are having the problems.
Do you have other PCI cards in use? If so, then if you lose contact with them, that would be a clue.
On the other hand, you seemed to indicate that even when the Tempo lost the HD, you could still see the Tempo in System Profiler? If the Tempo is still shown in profiler, then, we have a real mystery on our hands. Of course, a system log file wouldn't help because you have lost it, unless you are booting from an external FW drive.
    Watson, the game is afoot.

  • How best to setup a Mac Pro with two hard drives for 1st hard drive or OS failure?

My first Apple, a Mac Pro,  is to arrive on Monday (1/7).  I will be putting Win7 on Bootcamp and installing Parrallels.  It will have two 1T hard drives.   I would appreciate
any advice on how best to set it up for best recovery in case of a hard drive or OS crash.   You can tell I have experience with Windows.    It looks like my best choices are
either disk cloning software or just installing OS X from the recovery disk  on the second drive.   Apple says it is legal to do another installation.   I know the disk cloning will not work on the bootcamp partition which I plan to use for the Parallels program.  Can OS X have an option to boot from two differnet disks and OS installs?
What I am really wanting to do in the event of a crash,  is to just boot up on the other disk and keep working.     I try to keep data on a separate partition  with backups so
that a disk or OS crash doesn't cause any data loss.

    I do not use windows.
However on my Mac Pro for cloning/backups/bootable backups i use Carbon Copy Cloner.
It has an ability to clone entire disk (unless specified differently) so I can boot from another disk or restore back if I want to.

  • How do I setup magazine to view pages consecutively, but print for double sided 11x17?

I have a quarterly newsletter I've begun.  I set it up as (8) 11x17 pages with (2) 8-1/2" x 11" page views per 11x17 page, so that when they print double sided, there are consecutive. The problem is that when I am trying to navigate from page to page, they are not consecutive on the screen. Is there a way to set up the pages at 8-1/2" x 11" consecutively in InDesign, but send to printer for two sided 11x17 and have the pages come out in the right place?
Not sure that I am describing properly. For instance viewing an 11x17 page (Page 1 as far as InDesign is concerned), the right half is Page 1, and the left half is page 16; or (page 2 in InDesign) is page 15 on the left side, and page 2 on the right side.  This all prints perfectly, but navigating it during layout is extremely cumbersome.  Also, printing for general public PDF viewing is impossible.
    Thanks, Rick

LOL - That for sure I knew. I just didn't know what to do about it.  I checked Acrobat...but I never really noticed that "booklet" option before, and right now the magazine isn't setup right, so I can't tell if it's working.  will it know that page 1 and page 16 go on the same side of one 11x17 sheet, and pages 2 and 15 go on the other side of that same page when printing two-sided?

  • Using firefox how do you setup a email account and or a webpage for viewing offline?

on my previous computer I was able to check my emails offline and I would like to be able to do the same on my current computer. It was already set that way, I can't remember now if it was through Firefox or Internet Explorer. according to Help & Support, Internet explorer no longer supports this service. any help I could get with this would be wonderful. Thank you very much

    Solved my own problem:
When it asks for the username, you must include your domain, unlike other clients.
So i added my @selu.edu to the end and it worked fine. I'm sure this would work for all GoogleApps users

coloradoapple, Welcome to the discussion area!

  • How to setup dual external monitors on a MacBook Pro 15" A1398?

Need to setup dual monitors for my new MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display A1398. I am in instructional designer and need the larger display from dual monitors. I think the best way is to connect using a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter in the two Thunderbolt ports or HDMI out of the one HDMI port and the other using a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter.  I have two Thunderbolt ports, two USB ports and one HDMI port. How do I setup OS X Mavericks for this as well. I want to run it in clamshell mode. Wondered if there are any better or easier ideas?
    With peace and love,
    Sam K.

Hi! I recommend you using both thunderbolt ports with their HDMI adapters, i don't know why but in my case it has worked better than having one monitor connected on one thunderbolt port and another on the HDMI port. As for the clamshell mode I recommend you this articles: Mac notebooks: How to use your computer in closed clamshell (display closed) mode with an external display and http://osxdaily.com/2012/06/08/quickly-enter-clamshell-mode-with-an-external-dis play-in-mac-os-x/.
    This are a few recommendations:
    1. Use a usb mouse and keyboard, because sometimes bluetooth ones are not that trusty
    2. You could buy one of the fancy things (you can see one on the second article) that hold your macbook up to prevent overheating. If you can't afford one or you don't to buy one, you can prop your macbook with some books on the side of the union between the lid and the keyboard (i don't know the word in english) and a very heavy one on the other side.

  • Is Snow base station (M8440, dual ethernet) capable of WPA2 ??

Am about to buy an Airport base station (snow/M8440) off eBay. Does anyone know if this base station is capable of WPA or WPA2? I will be using it with a Titanium G4 867mhz and 10.4.9.
I probably won't buy it if it is only capable of WEP. Thanks.

No, the snow AirPort base station (ABS) is not capable of WPA nor WPA2.
The snow ABS only does 64 and 128 bit WEP.

  • Dual Ethernet Airport

I have been able to configure the ABS dual ethernet using the LAN connection, but when I disconnect the ethernet cable the imac does not see the ABS. How do I get the imac to recognize the ABS or how do I connect to the ABS?
I am using airport admin utility for graphite and snow version 4.2.5. The admin utility does not show the ABS wirelessly, but will show it while connected using the ethernet cable.
I have tried doing a hard reset, but the original name remains and does not change and the soft reset does not do anything. the middle light blinks once every second and I have followed the manuals for hard and soft reset.
How do I get the computer to recognize the ABS?

If you're sure you've configured the airport to create a new network and its not showing up wirelessly, either the wireless functions of the airport or your computer are not working properly.
If you have several computers capable of wireless, check them all to see if the airport network shows up. If not, then the airport base station may be bad. (check out those new airport extremes, they're nice )
If your computer is unable to see any networks (at other locations or in your area), then the airport software/hardware on your computer could be bad. Try:
    - make sure airport is turned on in OSX
    - if you have an external antenna, make sure its plugged in properly
    - if you have a switch on your computer that turns on/off wireless, make sure it is turned on

  • How do I setup my Airport Extreme so that I can extend the coverage of my existing AT&T wifi network?

How do I setup my Airport Extreme so that I can extend the coverage of my existing AT&T wifi network?

Start by establishing a permanent fixed Ethernet cable connection from one of the available LAN <-> ports on the ATT modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme.
Ethernet cabling can be run up to 300+ feet or 100 meters, so you should be able to locate the AirPort Extreme exactly where it will be needed to provide more wireless signal coverage.
Configure the AirPort Extreme to "create" a wireless network using exactly the same wireless network name, same wireless security setting, and same wireless network password that the ATT wireless is using.
The final step is to insure that the AirPort Extreme is configured to operate in Bridge Mode, so it will work correctly with the ATT modem/router.
If you need more specific steps, we need to know what operating system you are using on your Mac or PC. If you have a Mac and do not know which operating system it is using.....click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen and then click About This Mac, and post back with the OS X version number that you see there.
