How do i share a iPhoto Library on iPhoto 9.5

Basically with the old version of iPhoto, they allowed a function in the preferences called sharing, with enabled a user to share a iPhoto library over a network to be accesed on another mac however this is not possible in the new version of iPhoto. Please can someone tell me or link me to a method that works or a tutorial that works and does the same thing automatically, i have already looked online but have been unable to find a method that works and does the same thing as the old function please.

There is simply no way to do what you want.
The nearest thing available to the old way is to use Shared PhotoStreams, but that's not automatic - they have to be set up.

The other alternative is to put the Library on an external disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and plug that into each machine as required. It's not the same as a: you have edit power on the Library and b: it cannot be safely accessed over a network.

I have iPhoto5 on iMacG5. I share the computer with my wife and she has a seperate log in as a seperate user. My question is how to I share my iPhoto Library and albums with her on her user page?
    iMacG5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The article states "Make sure you have read and write permissions for the folder and then apply this setting to all enclosed items."
That's exactly what I'm doing. I'm giving EVERYBODY full read and write permission by "Ignoring Ownership" on an entire drive. Incidentally, this can also be done on a partition.
An example would be you would be able to edit a photo that you have downloaded i your user but not the other user.<<<</div>
My wife and I have been doing that on a regular basis for several years and have never had an issue.
    Read the last paragraph.<<<</div>
You misunderstood the wording. I'm NOT using the "Shared" folder. I've created something comparable to a really really big floppy!

How can I share my iTunes library between me and my wife?
I do not want to set-up 2 seperate accounts on my mac. Do not want to do home sharing or anything like this.
I just would like to connect my iPad to ONE itunes library and at the same time connect my wifes iPad to the SAME itunes library. Can this be done? How? Thanks! Maybe the answer is something really easy like "just connect both to the computer and sync them".
    Thanks!

Plug them in and use them.
That is all you need to do.
In the answer from Apple I do not find anything about how the 2 exisiting iTunes accounts will be handled.
    They will be handled fine.
All purchases from both iTunes accounts can be sync'd to both/either iPads with no problem.
I have three iTunes accounts (me and two daughters), 3 iPhones, an iPad and a few iPods.
Any/all content can be sync'd to any device, no problems.

Drag your \Music\iTunes\ folder to the Shared directory. In the Finder, right click - get info.
Go to *Sharing & Permissions* tab and make sure everyone has Read/Write permissions and click the Gear and *Apply to enclosed items*.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select *Choose library* and select the _iTunes library file_ in the \Shared\iTunes\ folder.
Log out and your wife logs in.

If hse has music in her iTunes library that was not in your , sh eFile -> Add to library and select those items in her \Music\iTunes\iTunes media folder.
Then she can delete \Music\iTunes\ folder.

You could set up two completely separate libraries and share music via Home Sharing.

Thank you Joe - I tried this but it's only showing a teensy amount of music - the stuff on the second users account as opposed to the giagntic library on the 'main' account. I actually went to a Genius Bar and they said that apple doesn't really want you to share music between accounts - parents don't want to hear their kids music etc. Which seemed strange, but it might be the case sadly   Thanks anyway!

Another alternative is she can select tracks from your library copy and just add them to her library. Then she does not have to bother with switching between two libraries.

  • How do I share my iTunes Library

    Hi,
I was wondering if anybody can tell me how to fully share my iTunes library with other accounts on the one mac.
Recently my boyfriend got an iPod Shuffle and obviously wants to put music on it. He did used to have his own login so he could change his desktop picture etc.without having administrator privilages.
I ticked the share Libraries option in my iTunes preferences but when he opens iTunes in his area although my Library shows he can't create his own playlists from as they are all greyed out. I don't want him to import the CD's he wnats all over again as its time consuming and fills the hard drive unneccassarily. But, he wants his own library so he can put music on there that I don't neccessarily want on my iPod.
I know you can unselect the automatic import so that he can create his playlists and it only imports that onto his shuffle as that is what we are doing at the mo. But he wants his own library and access to mine as well and I don't really want the hassle of selecting titems to add to my iPod.
Is there a way to do this?

  • How do I share one Iphoto library with other User accounts on the same iMac

I have created a shared Iphoto Library. When I add this to one of the user accounts, it copies all the pictures instead of sharing the same library. The result is that it uses memory.
Is it possible to create a shared library that is shared by all the users without actually copy all the pictures to each users Iphoto library?

    Hi MikaelK,
    SHARING IPHOTO LIBRARIES
Sharing libraries between users on the same local network
You can also share a library on the same machine between users the same way.
Sharing libraries between users on the same machine...
-both users must have sharing enabled in their iPhoto Preferences
-both users must be logged in and have iPhoto running
-Remember that you can only view the other library. You can't edit the photos or play the saved slideshows or view the made books or burn them to CD or DVD. The books and slideshows will show up as an album. You can play that album as an "on the fly" slideshow. You can drag images from the sharing library to your library in the source column to import them to your library. You can then edit, add to albums, books, slideshow, etc.

SHARING ONE IPHOTO LIBRARY BETWEEN USERS ON SAME MACHINE
You can try one of these three methods:
1- Use iPhoto Library Manager-the paid version
The documentation page will give instructions on how it is done.
2- Sharing one iPhoto library between several users on one machine
3- Share an iPhoto Library in tiger Using ACL's
4- I have also read about ShareAlike
There is no other info on the site about how it works.
I strongly urge anyone wanting to try any of the methods for sharing one iPhoto Library folder among more than one user to backup all iPhoto Library folders before attemptin anything.

  • How can you share a iPhoto library with another account user

I have recently seen the light and swapped from Windows to my lovely new iMac. However I am rather confused how I can configure my iPhoto library so my wife can view the same library in her account on the same machine (this was a simple thing within Windows, using shared folders). Am I missing something or do I have to duplicate the same library and place into my wife's account and then update each time we upload some photo's? Please help!

This may not be the "neatest" solution possible, but it's one that works. Just as iPhoto makes it easy to share photos between computers on the same network, you can also share photos between accounts on the same computer; but you'll have to be logged in with iPhoto running.
    1) Configure iPhoto in your account for photo sharing (from iPhoto, select Preferences > Sharing> Share my photos).
    2) Enable fast user switching from System Preferences > Accounts > Login Options. This is the key to the process, which will allow you to remain logged in while your wife is also logged in. It's also a very handy feature if you and your wife use the computer a lot from your own accounts.
    3) Enable "Personal File Sharing" and "Remote Apple Events" from System Preferences > Sharing > Services. [I had already done this step, so I'm not sure if it's strictly necessary]
    4) With iPhoto up and running in your account, use Fast User Switching to log into your wife's account (ie, you remain logged-in). [The Fast User Switching menu will be in the upper right of the main menu bar.]
    5) From her iPhoto preferences, select Sharing > "Look for shared photos" if it's not already switched on.
Your photos will magically appear in the left hand column of your wife's iPhoto application using the name you designated in your copy of iPhoto.
Caveats: performance is not very good, you must be logged in and have iPhoto running, HP printers (if you have one) don't work well with fast user switching
Other solutions might be possible by "drilling a hole" into your account by altering the Unix permissions. I've used this technique to make my iTunes library available to other users on my machine. Such a solution would no doubt improve performance.
Finally, there are third-party products that allow you to manage multiple iPhoto libraries. I've never used these, but they might allow you to load the iPhoto library from another account assuming permissions are properly set.
Hope this is of some use; I'm sorry if it's a little more complicated than you might have expected.
