How do I share an external hard drive with 3 macs

On my gmac, I have an external hard drive that all my itunes music/videos are being saved to. I would like to give the other macs access to the itunes music but can not seem to network it. I have no problem logging on to any of the three computers and sharing/using folders from each mac but I can not get the other two computers to see my external hard drive. I tried using SharePoints but the issue seems to be that the external hard drive shows up at the "computer" level, whereas the networking shows up at the internal hard drive level. I've searched all over the boards but can't seem to find anything that helps me with this particular situation. I am using a SeaGate external hard drive that is formated as FAT32.

Highlight the Share in Sharepoints>Normal Shares tab. Look down & right for the Windows (SMB) sharing and change it Shared(+). Click Update Share, Share should now show a + under SMB & AFS. Click the Little Show File System Properties button, set users & group, Permission, etc.,Update Share.
That's the basics.

  • How do I connect my external hard drive with all of my digital media to my Apple TV network and make it accessable 24/7?

How do I connect my external hard drive with all of my digital media to my Apple TV network and make it accessable 24/7?  I have the latest Apple TV, ipads, iPhones as well as a solid HP Windows machine all on my home network.  Is there a way that I can connect my hard drive to my receiver or Apple TV directly so that the digital media is available on my network 24/7 rather than have it connected to my computer and available through Home Share which never works anyway??

Sorry it's all done through iTunes.

  • How can I partition my external hard drive supporting mac OS in one partition and windows OS in another?

Hello everyone, how can I partition my external hard drive supporting mac OS in one partition and windows OS in another?

    OK. Start with:
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two (2). Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Click on the Erase tab in DU's main window. Select one of the two partitions, preferably the first one, change the Format type: to MSDOS then click on the Erase button.

  • How can I partition an external hard drive with data in it? When I select the drive, the partition option is grayed out.

I am having a problem partitioning an external hard drive with data in it.
When I select the partition, everything is grayed out.  I can't add a a partition for some reason.  When I asked this question to other people, they told me to select my partition "io" to do it from there.
As you can see, I can't seem to partition it form there either.  I ran the Verify Disk utility but the volume came out okay.
Any ideas as to what the problem would be?
    Thanks!
    Luis

Select the main hard drive entry (topmost one.) Click on the Partition tab. Shrink the existing partition by grabbing the sizing gadget in the bottom right corner and pushing up until you free up enough space for your second partition. Be sure you do not shrink to less than the space currently occupied by your files. Click on the Add[+] button to create a new partition in the free space. Click on the Apply button and wait until the partitioning is completed.

  • How can i use external hard drive with mac and pc!

I've been using a Lacie external hard drive with my mac to keep the itunes library and other things since day one. Since i have a dvd with files for windows and an old pc without a dvd drive, i decided to copy and paste the content of the dvd to the external hard drive. The only problem now is that when i plug the external hard drive to pc, it won't open. I know it has to be formatted in a different way, but i need to find out the best solution!
    Any idea?

You can format the external drive in Fat32 (which I don't recommend but is the most compatible between both platforms), or NTFS (which requires some work to get your Mac to recognize), or HFS+ (which requires special software on your PC so your PC can use it).
If you use this drive mostly with your Mac, get MacDrive for your PC:

If you use this drive mostly with your PC, here's some software for you Mac. I haven't tried this myself, but the professional reviews have been good:

  • How can I use my external hard drive with my new (firewire-less) MacBook?

I read in another post that the available firewire adapters don't work for external hard drives. So how can I get my music, etc. off my external hard drive and onto my new computer?

Like the second or third one in this picture?
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f4/USBtypes2.jpg
They are USB ports - the smaller one is a mini-USB (like you might find on a digital camera) and the third is a USB-B port (such as on a printer). You can use a mini or standard USB cable (depending on the port) to connect it to your Macbook.

  • How can i use an external hard drive with my ipad

I just got a new ipad 2 I am trying to see it is possible to connect a external hard drive to take  my picture and documents with me.

Basically you can't, though there are a few (fairly expensive) drives coming onto the market which are said to be compatible. There is no USB port on the iPad, and the optional camera connection kit is only for the transfer of photos/videos, so wouldn't recognise other file types - if you were able to connect a drive via it then the drive would need it's own power source, the photos would have to be in a specific format, and there is still no guarantee that it would work.
There are apps available for the iPad which can use/access cloud services such as Dropbox.

  • How do i reformat an external hard drive for mac

i just bought a new external hard drive to back up my mac but it is not formatted for mac yet

You can do that in Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities).
With your new drive attached, choose it on the left. Choose the Partition tab. Decide if you want one or more partitions. Give each partition a name and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format. Then click on Options and choose GUID partition scheme. Click on Apply. Your new hard drive will be erased and formatted properly - when done, it is ready for whatever you want to put on it (you do not need any software that may be on the drive currently).

  • Using an external hard drive with Mac & PC

Hello. I am still using a 2005 PPC iMac running Tiger. My photos are stored in Aperture and Lightroom 2, however they are all stored on my computer's hard drive. I want to remove them from my computer and store them on an external hard drive instead.
My flat mate has a Windows based PC laptop and also has stuff he wants to store on an external hard drive. We were thinking about going halves and getting a Western Digital 2TB hard drive and sharing it.
I understand that the hard drives can be shared for both formats using FAT32, how would this format affect my Lightroom/Aperture Libraries? Or would it just be better to get an individual hard drive each? If so can you recommend any good ones for use with the mac that are not too costly?

Fat32 will limit File sixes to 4 GB & have some naming restrictions.
    A few options...
You could format that HDD as Fat32/MS-DOS, but you'd be limited to 4 GB Filesizes.

  • How do I use an external hard drive with iMovie 10.0.1? I have run out of disk space on my Macbook Air.

How do I use an external drive with iMovie 10.0.1?  It is not obvious and I have run out of space.

If you want to move a complete iMovie 10 library (file with .imovielibrary extension) click on the library in the libraries pane and select  File - Consolidate Library Media.  This ensures that all media is copied to the library.  You can then move the library onto your external drive using Finder.  The first time to want to access it from iMovie you will have to tell it where it is by choosing  File - Open Library -Other and navigating to it.
If you only want to transfer part of a library to another drive, create a new library a at the desired location  File - Open Library - New  and copy projects and events to it from within iMovie.
Its all described in iMovie help - "Work with multiple libraries".

format the drive NTFS and install e.g. the NTFS 3G driver on the Mac.

  • How do i partition external hard drive using mac

how do i partition my external hard drive on mac? can i use it as time machine disk as well as external drive?

You can use an external disk for store files and for Time Machine, but you have to create a second volume.
To create volumes on the external disk, use Disk Utility. See > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html I recommend you to put as much space as you can for the Time Machine volume, because backups consume a lot and Time Machine starts deleting backups when the external disk is full
