How do i share my itunes library across accounts on my Mac mini server?

got the new server for the holidays and I migrated my entire itunes library from my old PC.  It was my expectation that the accounts on the server would all have access to the same library, however, that does not appear to be the case.  When my son logged in and we opened iTunes, the library was empty.
clearly the default is that each user would have their own library.  What do I need to do for the library to be visible to all of the accounts?  And what, if anything do I need to do so that additional accounts automatically have the correct iTunes library loaded?
Thanks
Rob

Is this 10.8 Server?

  • How do I share one photo library across accounts?

    Hi,
We have four accounts on one family computer (a Powermac G5), and I would iPhoto in each of these accounts to point to the same photo library. (This is iPhoto 6.)
Here is what I have done: I placed the iPhoto Library into the "Shared folder (under Users/Shared). I then started up iPhoto in one of the accounts with the option key pressed, and then chose the desired library in the dialogue box. This worked well. When I tried to do the same in the other three accounts, the process failed. iPhoto simply reported "Loading Photos," with the grey wheel simply going round and round until I quit the program. No Photos show up.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks for your help.

Click here and follow the instructions; simply moving the iPhoto library won't work due to file and folder permissions.

  • How can I share my iTunes library with 2 iTunes accounts?

How can I share my iTunes library between me and my wife?
I do not want to set-up 2 seperate accounts on my mac. Do not want to do home sharing or anything like this.
I just would like to connect my iPad to ONE itunes library and at the same time connect my wifes iPad to the SAME itunes library. Can this be done? How? Thanks! Maybe the answer is something really easy like "just connect both to the computer and sync them".
    Thanks!

Plug them in and use them.
That is all you need to do.
In the answer from Apple I do not find anything about how the 2 exisiting iTunes accounts will be handled.
    They will be handled fine.
All purchases from both iTunes accounts can be sync'd to both/either iPads with no problem.
I have three iTunes accounts (me and two daughters), 3 iPhones, an iPad and a few iPods.
Any/all content can be sync'd to any device, no problems.

You could set up two completely separate libraries and share music via Home Sharing.

Thank you Joe - I tried this but it's only showing a teensy amount of music - the stuff on the second users account as opposed to the giagntic library on the 'main' account. I actually went to a Genius Bar and they said that apple doesn't really want you to share music between accounts - parents don't want to hear their kids music etc. Which seemed strange, but it might be the case sadly   Thanks anyway!

Another alternative is she can select tracks from your library copy and just add them to her library. Then she does not have to bother with switching between two libraries.

  • How do I share my iTunes Library

    Hi,
I was wondering if anybody can tell me how to fully share my iTunes library with other accounts on the one mac.
Recently my boyfriend got an iPod Shuffle and obviously wants to put music on it. He did used to have his own login so he could change his desktop picture etc.without having administrator privilages.
I ticked the share Libraries option in my iTunes preferences but when he opens iTunes in his area although my Library shows he can't create his own playlists from as they are all greyed out. I don't want him to import the CD's he wnats all over again as its time consuming and fills the hard drive unneccassarily. But, he wants his own library so he can put music on there that I don't neccessarily want on my iPod.
I know you can unselect the automatic import so that he can create his playlists and it only imports that onto his shuffle as that is what we are doing at the mo. But he wants his own library and access to mine as well and I don't really want the hassle of selecting titems to add to my iPod.
Is there a way to do this?

  • Sharing itunes library across accounts on the same IMac

How do you share your ITunes library with other accounts on the same IMac? There's clear advice how to share it with other networked computers, but how do you do it across accounts on the same IMac?

You can copy the desired library to the shared folder.
You then need to go to each iTunes app. in the various users and change the iTunes music folder location.

  • HT4914 Can I use iTunes match to share my iTunes library across different users on the same computer?

I'm a teacher and I use my MBP in school and, while I've not had any issues with students looking through my computer, I'd like to use a seperate 'school' user just in case.  I need to have access to my iTunes library and I tried moving it to a shared folder but, possibly because of the size of my library, itdoesn't seem to work.  Is there a way I can use iTunes match to enable my 'school' user to access my library in the same way I can with my iPhone?

    Hey darkmavis86,
Great question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I believe you would benefit from the following article:
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203
However, if you do decide to use iTunes Match the answer to your question is "Yes". iTunes Match can be used to "sync" your iTunes library across multiple devices / computers / users.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • How do i share my itunes library with other users on the same mac

I'm trying to share my itunes library with other users on the same mac.  I have tried moving my library to a public folder but when the other user logs in they can't see it in the public folder?

Presuming you moved the entire iTunes folder to the shared folder the other users need to start their iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and select the iTunes Library.itl file in the shared folder.  Only once should be necessary.  Note that any changes anybody makes will be seen by everybody, so you have to trust each other a lot.
If all you moved are media files each user will have to add those files to their iTunes library.
