How do i solve fonts/display/encoding issue?

This problem only appears on Firefox and no other browsers. When i go into some website the letters will not appear correctly. You may see an example on the link below which contains a screenshot

This issue can be caused by the Helvetica or Geneva bitmap font or another (bitmap) font that can't be displayed by Firefox in that font size.
Firefox can't display that font in the specified size and displays gibberish instead.
You can test that by zooming out (View > Zoom > Zoom Out, Ctrl -) to make the text smaller.
Uninstall (remove) all variants of that not working font to make Firefox use another font or find a True type version of that font that works better.

If you are DPS single edition user, then you need to enter serial number to activate app.
But it would be more helpful if you let us know which DPS edition you have?

[SOLVED] File name encoding issue

Hi all,
I have a large series of files with accented characters, they were all displayed nicely, but at some point, when I copied them to another computer, the characters were replaced by codes, for instance: "ó" --> "Ã³".
+Renaming ie. "PasÃ³" (bad encoding of "Pasó") --> Pasó, while writing it, it shows the correct character, but when pressing enter the name remains ("PasÃ³")
+If I rename the file to something else and then to the correct name, it will accept it: PasÃ³ --> Pas --> Pasó will display correctly.
I don't know if it's a system wide encoding issue because new files are displayed correctly, but I would like to know if I have to change file names manually to make them right.
PS. When copying bad encoded files to another FS (like a USB drive), nautilus and bash refuse to copy them.

How to fix jaggy font display problem?

I upgraded to Snow Leopard from Leopard a few days ago and have been having font display problems ever since.
When I first upgraded, everything seemed fine, but then Word wouldn't display Arial. So, I validated fonts in Font Book and discovered a bunch of dupes. When I deactivated the dupes, that problem was resolved. But, a new problem occurred. Many of the fonts throughout various applications (Mail, Safari, Finder) appeared jaggy.
I tried playing with text smoothing and LCD font smoothing, but neither seemed to have much, if any, effect.
Then, I decided that I hadn't had a good font cleanup for several years, and maybe all the dupes and other detritus were part of the problem. So, I literally deleted all my fonts from system/library, root/library and user/library (I copied some into a .zip archive for safe keeping) and reinstalled Snow Leopard and all current updates. Then, I fixed permissions twice (though there are always permissions that won't fix) and booted into single user and did an fsck.
But, after all that, my jaggy problem still persists
It's really strange in that it appears worse at some times. And, doesn't seem to be present in all apps. Here's a screenshot from YouTube with Safari on the left (bad jaggies) and Chrome on the right (no jaggies).
I'd really appreciate some help. Any ideas?

Start with something relatively simple, like clearing the font cache files.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
sudo atsutil databases -remove
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and all user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.
This does not clear the font cache files for Word (Office), which keeps its own such items.
Close all Office applications. Remove the following files. The tilde (~) indicates your home account.
~/Library/Caches/com.microsoft.browserfont.cache
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Font Cache (11)
For Office 2008, the location of the second item is:
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Office Font Cache (12)
For Office 2011, the location is:

When downloading some PDF documents, the font changes. I have tried several troubleshooting solutions, but my issue was not solved. What can I do to prevent this from happening or if it does, to remedy the problem?

Yes, Ajlan, thank you. I solved the issue by opening PDF documents of unwanted fonts with another PDF document reader. When I open my files folder, there is an option (drop down box) at the top that allows for me to choose from either Adobe Reader or PDF Vista. It may have been there all along; I just didn't notice it until I recently had this issue.

About the slim fonts... this is actually a fix with qt4.5. Old qt didnt respect some system font settings so now that it does, tweak ~/.fonts.conf how you want it.
And about glitches... there will be some minor problems untill kdemod rebuilds against the new qt, you can rebuild workspace yourself if you dont want to wait for them.

How do i solve the "blocked plugin" issue?

I inadvertently downloaded an Adobe update and subsequently started getting a "blocked plugin" message when I tried to use some applications; I then uninstalled Adobe and still have blocked plugins, now on almost everything, i.e. YouTube, videos, etc-anyone know how to fix this?

Are you a Creative Cloud subscriber? If so, what kind of subscription do you have? Single app? Or the whole suite? Single Edition apps (the "Create App" command) are only available to full Creative Cloud subscribers.
If you just want to test your designs you can use Adobe Content Viewer, available from your device's app store, to view the content. No need to use "Create App". See Digital Publishing Suite Help | Previewing folios and articles

How do I troubleshoot a display or system font in Illustrator

I think I am having trouble with how a certain system font displays in Illustrator. I am not sure which font it is. Can someone explain why I am getting a swatch list that looks like this:
All these "mystery" swatches are associated with a piece of artwork that was obtained from a stock image website.

The font looks fine for your palette, you have just encountered some swatches from someone using a OS different than English. Just use the command to select unused colors adn delte, or change the names if they are used. If the colros keep coming back look into a post deleted global colors, as that incremental numbering naming convention looks similar to that.

Character encoding issue

I'm using the below give code to send mail in Trukish language.

But my customer says that he gets sometime unreadable characters in mail. I'm not able to understand how to solve this character encoding issue.
Should i ask him to change his mail client's character encoding settings?
If yes which one he should set.

Send the same characters using a different mailer (e.g., Thunderbird or Outlook).
If they're received correctly, come the message from that mailer with the message
from JavaMail. Most likely other mailers are using a Turkish-specific charset instead
of UTF-8.

It sounds like you are having a overheating issue.
As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...

Installing software from the web is a bit more difficult than from AppStore.
Microsoft Silverlight should be approved through Gatekeeper, so having to control or right click on the installer to select "Open" to bypass Gatekeeper shouldn't be required.
If this is occuring, like it's saying this app can't be installed as it's not from MacAppStore or a Apple Identified Developer, then it's likely not the real Silverlight but a trojan malware.

I try to stabilize a pdf generation config with specific parameters to allow exact render of text with any reader.

Since this problem occurs for years now, i can mention 2 products and version concerned at now:

Actually, because the difference was intriguing, I found a little more time. Here is a discussion of the problem. I do not expect it to mean anything to you, but can be passed along to the maintainers of GhostScript and/or PDFCreator if you wish.
The file was created by GPL GhostScript 9.06, application PDFCreator Version 1.6.2.
In creating this PDF, the three TimesNewRoman fonts were embedded, as symbolic fonts
with randomly assigned glyphs starting with index 0. No Encoding was used in the font
dictionary. They contain a (1,0) and (3,0) cmap subtable.
The TimesNewRoman font is set up almost correctly, with Flags 4 (symbolic), though 6 would be
better prthaps (symbolic, serif)
The TimesNewRoman,Bold and ,Italic fonts had Flags 34 and 98 respectively. Crucially, these
do not set the symbol flag (values of 6 and 70 respectively would work as expected).
ISO 32000-1 9.6.6.4 talks about how Encoding is managed for TrueType fonts. It identifies
two cases which should "ensure predictable behaviour across all conforming readers":
* A nonsymbolic font should specific MacRoman Encoding or WinAnsiEncoding.
* A font not using standard encodings should not specify an Encoding; should set the
Symbol Flag; and should contain a 1,0 subtable.
Neither of these cases apply to the ,Bold or ,Italic case (but the presence of a Symbol
flag would make them apply, and tests show this increases consistency).
Hence, this is in the territory officially described by ISO 32000-1 as "dependent on
the conforming reader" and not honouring "should follow certain guidelines to ensure
predictable behaviour across all conforming readers".
The behaviour of this PDF is not predictable, as has been seen (evince displays as expected
by the user, if not by the specification, while Acrobat, Mac OS X Preview and Chrome do not).
Recommend that the PDF creation module in GhostScript be modified to follow one of the
two cases above, for consistent rendering.
