How do I sort artist collaborations on my iPod?

In my music library, there are some artists that do a lot of collaborations with other artists. This is a problem when I sort by artist on my iPod Touch (running the latest software). The best example is the Melvins. The Melvins have worked with over 30 artists in their career, so when I'm scrolling past the Ms I get a list that looks like this:
Melvins & Foetus
Melvins & Jello Biafra
Melvins & Mike Patton
Melvins & Skeleton Key
Melvins & Tool
Melvins & Lustmord
Melvins & Leif Garret
Melvins & Lee Ronaldo
Melvins & Hank Williams III
...and it just keeps going.
How can I get all these listed artists under one name, so that all the Melvins collaborations appear under just "Melvins" and not over 30 "Melvins & ...'s?"

I have a problem with this also and with compilations not showing under artists names, but if I want to see all the info on my iPod, the only thing I have found works is by moving the 2nd collaborator to the title, for example adding "feat." or "with" after the track name. These are my two biggest issues with my iPod classic.

For individual songs, Get Info has a sort field.  If you have a lot of songs, it will still be a lot of work to get caught up, though.

  • How to fix sorting artist problems?

Hey, I need some help here.
So I got a MacBook Air and synced it with my iPhone 5s, I lost all my iPhone music and started adding them over again but I noticed something which is frustrating to me. For example:
    Artist: A Day To Remember
When I transfer it to my iPhone, I open the app and it is sorted only as "Day To Remember" even when in the iPhone Music Library in my Mac it's listed as "A Day To Remember", after B's.
Same happens with some artists that start with THE.
I don't understand what's going on and fixing the tags in the iPhone music library is useless. And now the Mac library is not solving the problem either (Already tried checking and fixing the album artist and "sort as" types and still no response.)
Does anyone know the source to this issue?
    Thanks
    JM

There are actually several workarounds for this:
You can manually override the automatically-generated sort values - so if you want albums by The Beatles to sort by "T" rather than "B" you can enter "The Beatles" in the Sort Artist field
turingtest2 has created a VBScript that will do this automatically for a range of selected items - see the UnAutoSort script on this page.
If you're feeling really adventurous, you can modify iTunes' behavior for sort names by editing the appropriate version of the SortPrefixes.plist file - depending on your versions of Windows/iTunes this will be in C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.Resources\en.lproj or C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.Resources\en.lproj (for US English), or the relevant folder in iTunes Resources for other languages.  Note that any changes here will need to be repeated after every iTunes update as the file is reset to its default values by the installation process.
(Edit: obviously the references above are for Windows, I'm not sure whether there's a Mac equivalent of turingtest2's script but editing the SortPrefixes.plist file will work on Mac as well, allowing for variations in iTunes' folder structures).

  • How do I get Artist Images on my ipod Touch?

So, most artists have their own "Profile Image" on the iTunes Store and I realized they get synced to my iPod Touch, but some don't appear. I've bought some songs from artists that have their own image but they don't sync to my iPod, it's just the album art. How do I get the artists image to appear other than their album art? Please help!
Info: iPod Touch 5th Generation 32GB

I suspect you have a 4G iPod. As Apple said in June, iOS 7 is not compatible with the 4G iPod.
All the iOS devices compatible (iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, and 5G iPod touch) with iOS 7 have at least 512 MB of memory (RAM). The 4G iPod only has 256 MB

  • How do you sort your photos on your ipod?

i am using a black 5g 60gig ipod with itunes. i have itunes set up to sync to my photos folder. when itunes syncs however, there is no order to photos that are loaded onto my ipod. for example, within my photos folder, i have several sub-folders based on events. i've also used attribute magic free edition to change all the creation dates on my photos to the days they were taken.
now, when i load all these photos onto my ipod, the folder names are not sorted alphabetical by folder name, or chronological by picture creation date. my ipod photos folder looks something like this:
    gannos park trip (07.08.03)
    russ's house party (08.01.03)
    allie's party (06.04.05)
    dave matthews show (06.20.01)
    rick's last day (06.19.03)
    short's going away party (06.22.02)
    mary's cottage party (06.24.05)
now, every picture inside those folder has a creation date which matches the date of the folder. as you can see the folders are not in alphabetical order, or chronological order. is there any way to sort this into some sort of order, or am i kind of forced into this?

Although photos/videos in the Camera Roll are included with the iPod's backup, photos/videos in the Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.
The backup for your iPad is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process. You should be prompted to update the backup as the first step after selecting Restore.
Restoring your iPod with iTunes is the only way to remove the Passcode lock. The Passcode lock is not included with the backup so you can restore from the backup and hopefully recover the photos. If there is a problem with the backup in regards to this data, it may be lost which is why you should import these photos with your computer ASAP as with any other digital camera.

  • Sorting "artist" by last name

How do I sort artists by last name, i.e. Davis, Miles rather than Miles Davis?

I don't believe this issue is resolved. I believe it is a fundamental flaw in the iPod. If I'm look for a Frank Zappa song, iPod sorts it so that it's filed under "F" for Frank. Blech. The problem is, iPod does not have artist first and last name fields, just "Artist".
So the solution proposed above does work, but man, what a pain.
In the case above, an alternative (and quicker?) solution is to change the Artist Name sort field to "Davis" or "Davis, Miles" click OK, then click apply Artist sort to all songs by this artist, which iPod will do gracefully. But, man, with over 3,000 songs and who knows how many hundreds of Artists, Albums, and individual cuts, what an arduous process!
The fix is to have first and last name fields or to get "smart" and recognize a space between names so that an algorithm could be written to sort properly. Of course in that scenario, doing a mass conversion, "Led Zeppelin" would be filed as "Zeppelin, Led". Argh. (File as Zep).

  • Sort Artist field: how do you make it's data appear in the Artist list?

Usually, if I have an album by a particular artist already (e.g. Paul McCartney) and then add another which I want listed under the same artist (e.g. Wings), then there's no problem. I would just enter Paul McCartney in the Sort Artist and Sort Album Artist fields for the Wings album and I'd only have Paul McCartney listed under the artists (in List View).
However, occasionally this doesn't work and I want to know how to sort it. I imported an album by The Jacksons, entered Michael Jackson in the Sort Artist and Sort Album Artist fields, which resulted in The Jacksons being listed amongst the artists alphabetically as if Michael Jackson, although still displayed as The Jacksons. I then imported a Michael Jackson album and entered the same data in the same fields, and although the albums were displayed together and alphabetically listed as if Michael Jackson, they were listed amongst the artists as The Jacksons. I want to see Michael Jackson listed. I have it that way in 2 other libraries. I think this has occured because I entered The Jacksons' album first in a library which contained no Michael Jackson and therefore The Jacksons have taken precedence. How can I sort this?

As I see it the *Album Artist* field should keep tracks of an album together when different Artists are credited on an album. It does work this way in iTunes but not on most iPods. The *Sort Album Artist* field is used to control where that Album Artist is listed among others. e.g. to control whether "The Beatles" get sorted under "B" or "T". While linking different Artist values with an overal Album Artist makes sense, I don't think that the logic of Sort Album Artist was ever intended to merge different values of Album Artist.
Apple don't appear to be working to resolve this issue since it has been evident for quite some time. The workarounds I suggest in the post linked above will give one cover in cover flow, one album in the albums menu and one artist in the artist menu if applied consistently.
With your Paul McCartney/Paul McCartney & Wings issue for example, my preference would be to use the original album artists as credited. Otherwise change the Artist & Album Artist to "Paul McCartney" and then, if you wish, add \[As Wings\] to the album title or individual tracks. If you used Sort Artist & Sort Album Artist to make "Micheal Jackson" sort as "Jackson, Michael", "Janet Jackson" sort as "Jackson, Janet" and "The Jacksons" as "Jacksons" then all the related artists would be listed in the same place, but remain distinct.

  • How do I sort songs by artist by album using iTunes 10.5.0.142

    Hello,
In earlier iTunes versions there used to be a drop down at the top left corner of the music window that I could use to sort the songs. What happened to that drop down in 10.5.0.142?
Can I make this drop down come back?
If noy, how will I sort my songs so that all the songs are listed by artists having the albums together: For example Artist 1 has Album 1, Album 2 and Album 3 together, and then Artist 2 has Album 1, Album 2 and Album 3 together after Artist 1, and Artist 3 has Album 1, Album 2 and Album 3 together coming after Artist 2?
    Thanks for any help.

I can actually think of a reason why album art wouldn't be good - what if you bought tracks (or ripped them) at different times and an album art tagger in itunes or other software resulted in visually similar but different on a file size/content basis artwork?  You'd get more than one album listed because the software would not examine the art 'visually'.
I don't expect you to agree.

I can agree and see your point. Just wish there was a better way other than "lying" about the album artist info.  I'm sure its doable but don't expect it would ever happen. Software is too "mature" now.
And actually, I'd rather see what your suggesting - it would be a great clue to "fix" the art to the same inamge!

  • How do I sort by artist name on I tunes

how do I sort by artist name on I tunes

Sorry Chris - that doesn't work unless you want the albums all listed. What I found was so simple.  In the view catagoryclick on "Show View Options"  That brings up a whole table of things. At the top it says sort by and if you click on the arrow it brings up however you want it sorted  - in my case by artist instead of by song.
    Thanks anyway

Artists on new I-pod Nano looks at Album Artists not Artists so a whole load of Artists from complilation albums sit e.g. in a Various Artists bucket - how do I sort this

I think it looks at the Artist field, if Album Artist is blank.  So, for the songs on affected albums, you can try removing the "Various Artists" entry for Album Artist field (in iTunes).  Try this on one affected album, to see if it does what you want.
NOTE:  In iTunes, you can select multiple songs at the same time (such as all songs on an album), do a Get Info (right-click selection - Get Info) on selection, and remove the entry for Album Artist for all selected songs at the same time, from the Info window.

  • How does the iPod sort artists?

Hopefully this can be answered easily and quickly. I was changing the fields on a few artists and noticed that is has the album artist listed like The Beatles. Which while being true is a real pain. If that's how the iPod lists all the artists under The. Does it work sorting them under Artist? Or album artist?

It sorts on Artist unless teh Album Artist field is filled in.
If you do nto want to use the Album Artist field, don't.
Or you can fill in the *Sort Artist* field.
Right click on one song by The Beatles.
    Clcik on the Sort tab.
In the *Sort Artist* field, put Beatles, then OK.
On this song, right click -> Apply Sort Field and select Same Artist.
This will copy Beatles to the *Sort Artist* field for all songs by The Beatles.
The Beatles will now be sorted under B.

  • How can you sort music by artist in iOS 8.02 ?!

HOw can music be sorted by the artist in iOS 8.02 !? It only sorts by song title right now.. why not allow us to select how it is sorted.. like every other NORMAL application in the world?!

    Absolutely no help whatsoever.
IT simply say "if" the More button is available.. then you can have options... well, there is NO More button available?!
SO.. how do we get this mystical magical 'More' button!?
AS an aside, iOS 8 IMHO has aTON of little bugs that make it kinky and frustrating to use.

  • "Sort Artist" does not work on iPod / How to sort by album artist

I have many albums in my music collection that contain songs by different artists. In iTunes, I have set all these songs to the same "Sort Artist" so that they all appear under the same artist's name (the album artist's name).
However, when I sync my iPod, the "Sort Artist" settings don't carry over. For example, a compilation album with 10 songs by 10 different artists would show up under one single artist in iTunes (per my sort artist settings), but on the iPod the songs show up under 10 different artists. Is there any way to fix this problem? I basically want to sort my music by album artist, instead of just the artist.
The strange part is when I browse my iPod on my computer, the compilation albums are properly sorted under one artist, but it's still wrong when I browse on the iPod itself.

It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a multiple song info window, and from there you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
If you have, select 'no' instead and click 'ok'. Do this with any CD that has this issue. This will alter the info in iTunes, and you should then connect your iPod and synchronize the changes.
The problem arises because the information contained on the Gracenote CD Data Base (where iTunes gets all it's album/artist/track info from), is sometimes incorrect. It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not.
You should also check that the songs have album name info in their ID tags.
See: Some songs don't show under artist on my iPod.
Once you add a second album name for that artist even for a single song, ALL the rest of the songs should now show up under that artist, even those without album names.
Providing the spelling for the artists is exactly the same of course.

  • How do I fix my problem with Artist and Sort Artist?

I have all my songs sorted by Artist and because I have songs that feature other artists I use the sort artist field.
In itunes it all looks fine but when I sync it with my iPod Nano 5th Gen one of the artists names comes up as the artist for all songs.
Eg. I have 5 B.o.B songs. The Artist field has B.o.B and the featured artist so it looks like -B.o.B feat. Hayley Williams-. The sort artist field along with album artist and sort album artist field are all only B.o.B.
My problem is that when I sync them onto my iPod all the songs by B.o.B appear under B.o.B feat. Rivers Cumo when I sort by Artist despite this only being the artist for one and all listed with the same format as above. They all also come up with the Artist as B.o.B feat. River Cumo when I play one of the songs.
Is there anyway to fix this so on my iPod they all appear under B.o.B when sorting by Artist but when I play the song it gives me the artist name? I'd prefer not to have to put the featured artist in the song title.

This sometimes happens if your MacBook battery is swollen, and pushes on the underside of the trackpad.
Some users forgot that an alternate input device, like a tablet, does not shut off when set aside -- it continues to provide input at the same time as the mouse you put your hand on.
