How do I sort my individual files?

I will try to be as descriptive as I can. I have a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.9.1. I have searched the community and will continue to do so.  I am having no success in sorting my photo files. First, I go into Finder. I then select my drive. From the next column I then select the folder where the files I want are located. I have these folders named by date. I select the date I want and there is my list of, let's say, 100 files. They are half jpeg and half CR2 (raw) and are listed as follows:
File 1 jpeg
File 1 CR2
File 2 jpeg
File 2 CR2
File 3 jpeg
File 3 CR2, etc., etc. through 100.
I want to organize them by size so that all jpegs are first (1-50) and then the raw files second (51-100). However, even highlighting them and telling the computer to sort by size, it does nothing but sort the folders in the previous column. I have thousands of CR2 files I potentially want to delete so I need to be able to sort in this manner. Any guidance that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.  I swear I was able to do this previously irrespective of list view, icon view, etc. simply by selecting the entire list and choosing my sort/arrange either by kind or by size (as all CR2 files are significantly larger than even the largest jpeg.  Thanks in advance.

Based on some earlier suggestions by others, I finally figured this one out, and it works perfectly every time.  I just deleted thousands of RAW files easily from iPhoto since I edit those with Lightroom on my desktop and now I have only the JPEGs on my Mac Air, saving tons of hard drive space.
Do this: In Finder / View / Show View Options / Arrange by:  Name and Sort by:  Size.  Check all fields you wish to see displayed, e.g., name, date created, etc..  Now open iPhoto and select Events.  You will need to perform the next series of steps individually for each desired Event, one at a time.  My procedure didn't work when I tried it for All Photos, for example.  Now click on an Event album that you wish to delete a file type, e.g., RAW, JPG, MOV, etc.  Click File / Reveal in Finder / Original File.  Finder will display all file names in the selected Event in a pop-up window.  Now simply highlight the files you wish to delete and then Move to Trash.  Empty Trash.  They are now gone!  Repeat for other desired photo Event albums.
Hope that helps.

I have done an icloud backup on my iPad mini. I now need to get back one of the iMovie videos that I backed up. How do I restore one individual file?

You can't. When you restore from a backup it will restore everything in the backup. You might be able to find a third party app that will allow you to extract individual files from an iTunes backup, but not with an iCloud backup.

I have a folder with 2000 files. I need to sort these files into two folders. I have sequentially renamed the files in automator so that a number is the first character of each file. I need to put the odd numbered files in folder one and the even numbered ones in folder two.
I can do this sort in a spreadsheet. How do I get the resuls of the spreadsheet sort back into automator?

  • How can I sort photos by file name on my IPAD?

I have sorted all my photos by filename (on a windows PC). After downloading the photos to my IPAD they are sorted by shooting date. This is for sure not what I wanted. Does anybody know how I can solve this (sort my photos on filename!)? Thanks.

    From http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4221 :
If you are using Windows, or are not using iPhoto or Aperture on Mac OS X, you must change the Date Taken of photos to change their sorting on your device. Third-party photo-management software may be able to do this.

  • When creating a photo book how can I sort the photos shown by file name?

I am creating a photo book. The photos shown in the right hand column appear out-of-order. How do I sort them by file name? The album in iPhoto the book is based on is sorted by file name.

You can not - they are soreted by date
--  the only solution I have seen is to put them in an album sorted the way you and and then use the batch cnage command to redate them with a small invrement between so a data sort matches your desired sort  --  I personally do not want to redate a bunch of my photos nor do i want  to have to go through and un-re- date a bunch

  • PE9 - sort photos by file name?

PE9 - how can I sort photos by file name so I can drag and drop into the timeline?

Date is all I want to sort by, so for me it is a better way than filename. Originally they were sorted by name on iOS devices (up to iOS 3.1.3), but Apple must have decided (possibly via feedback) that capture date was a better way. You can always try leaving feedback and maybe in the future there will be a choice : http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html
If you want to sort them in a different order then you can do so if you use a Mac and transfer the photos via iPhoto or Aperture. Otherwise you can either manipulate their capture dates prior to syncing so that they are in the order you want (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4221), or there are third-party apps in the iTunes App Store that apparently allow sorting e.g. Photo-Sort for iPad or Sort Shorts iPad Edition

  • Sorting photos by file size

When I switched from my PC to the Mac the photos that were imported from my Picasa backup created more than one file, sometimes 3 of each image! I need to be able to start organizing my photos and I really need to delete the smaller images. I can not figure out how though, and it is driving me insane!!! Not to mention chewing up a TON of disk space!
    HELP!!!!!
How do I sort by image/file size so I can delete them?!?!? (And not screw up and delete a precious photo of my kids as infants?)

    zzwhitejd:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It may be how Picassa and windows handles thumbnails as opposed to OS X. When you imported directly from the PC you might have imported the support files that, on the Mac, contained in the Resource Fork of the file. If you can try copying some of the files again to a folder on the desktop first and see what you get in the way of the number of files.
To get rid of those duplicates already in the library you can try using Duplicate Annihilator or iPhoto Diet. In either case make a backup copy of the iPhoto LIbrary folder just in case the results are not what you expected.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How do I sort clips in the Project panel library (bin) alphabetically by file name?

Two questions: How do I sort clip thumbnails in the Project Panel library (bin) alphabetically by file name?
How do I "select" a group of 25 consecutive clips on the time line to form a group without having to click on each individual clip one at a time. The method in the Help menu about "alt" click does nothing for me.

Sorry, I missed part 2. Unless CS4.2 has added a true "Group" function, like in InDesign, Illustrator, etc., there is not a direct way to keep Selected Clips together. However, you can put them on their own Sequence and then Nest that Sequence with others. This is often done, so that one can apply Effects "globally" to that Nested Sequence. [Note: there is no real Group function in Titler either, but for many operations, one can Select multiple Text Blocks, Shapes, Lines, etc., but there is no way to permanently "hold" that group.]
The Alt-click in the Project Panel, for instance, will allow one to drag all to the Timeline, and the Shift-click (or lasso w/ Cursor) in the Timeline will allow one to apply certain things to that group, but the moment that any other Clip is Selected, that "group," does not exist.
I can see a use for a real Group function, but for things like the application of Effects, one would still need to do the Nesting. Test this out by Selecting just two Clips, and go to apply an Effect - you cannot do that. OTOH, one can apply an Effect to one Clip, Rt-click it and choose Copy, then Select multiple Clips and Rt-click on those, where you would Paste Attributes. Not exactly what I think you are asking about, but the results, with just a few clicks, should be the same.
If I missed your intent and need, let me know where I went wrong.

  • How do you retrieve individual files from Time Machine?

If a file original is lost or becomes corrupted, is there anyway to retrieve that individual files from Time Machine? If so, how?

Time Machine finds that file, and not other files that meet the criteria. BUT...
That's not what TM was doing. My search criteria was "by filename", however when I try to go backwards in TM, that limit is lost and it appears to be returning every file in the rolled-up weekly archive. This is especially odd, because I have since determined that the file was actually corrupted before TM was running, so there should be only one version of the file in TM's archives.
No, it was a file sitting on my disk. Email was mentioned, because the fact that every email in every junk folder appears as a separate item to be restored, which is what triggers that little "too many files to show you at one time" issue.
So your name search returned lots of junk mail items. I shudder to think what the file name was that you were searching for! <g>
Also: you can tell Time Machine to ignore your junk mail if you've filtered the junk mail in Mail into a different folder/box.
I figured that one out. I had used Spotlight to find the junk mailboxes, but couldn't, only the messages "labeled" junk. I had to use 'find' in Terminal.app to actually find Mail's junk & spam folders.
Yeah, it's hard to find stuff when you don't know where it is <g>. In general, though, for these kinds of things, always think: "Library" which is where SO many pieces of programs are stored. Of course, there's lots of Library folders, so your first job is to decide: system or user level? Realizing more than one user account could have email setups, you can assume the path you need starts at the User level. So, you start at Home[UserName]/Library. Scanning that Library folder, you see a Mail folder (aha!). Checking out that folder, you might first suspect the Mailboxes subfolder, but you'll soon see that it has the mailboxes you've defined for sorting your mail; so, you continue to scan the Mail folder and you see a folder with your email address on it (or multiple folders, one for each of your emails). Open one of those and, ta da! You see something labeled junk.mbox.
You've already found your Junk mail, of course, but I'm suggesting this as a general approach, especially for other readers of this thread, who might not want to touch Terminal.
But, back to one of your initial problems: TM seemed to lose your search criteria. Do you think it was related to the high number of " hits"? Does it work for you otherwise, when you search for something less general?

  • I have three websites in one file. How do I separate them into three individual files?

I have three websites in one file (Domain.Sites2). How do I separate them into three individual files without taking the site down or loosing files?

Duplicate the domain file 3 times (keeping the orignal as a backup).  Name each domain file for the website you want it to contain.  Then open each domain file and delete the two sites you don't want it it.
Since you're running Mt. Lion you'll need to read the following in order to be able to open the different domain files.
In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • How do I restore individual files/folders from Time Machine to a PC?

My Mac of six years have crashed and been sent to the apple hospital for surgery, but I had time machine backing up all my files. Yah! Now with the help of 'macdrive' I can see the files on my windows computer, but when I tried to restore any individual files or folders to the pc, nothing.
I would click on the files from my external drive and a box comes up for 'where do you want to copy selected files?'. Right-clicking only provide the 'copy', 'copy to', and 'create a shortup' options. Whichever options I try, no copies/restored files is created.
How do I restore the files (not the entire system, just pictures and documents) to a windows computer?
    Help please

You need to be more specific what types of files are you trying to restore. It sounds like you just need to learn how to use TM which is pretty darn easy. Here is one good article and you can always use Apple's find out how video on TM.

  • How can I sort files in a folder by name?

How can I sort files in a folder by name? iFS first sort files that starts with upper-case letter and then files with lower-case letter.
    Like:
    A_file
    B_file
    a_file
    b_file
    I want:
    A-file
    a_file
    B_file
    b_file
    This doesn't help:
    String[] sort_attributes = {"NAME"};
    boolean [] sort_orders = {true};
    SortSpecification sort = new SortSpecification(sort_attributes, sort_orders);
    currentFolder.setSortSpecification(sort);
Do I have to get all items in a folder and then sort them?
    /Elin

I do not think there is a way to do that without add-ons
There are a couple of workarounds I am aware of
    * Add the bookmarks manually in the bookmarks library and choose the position. That is using Show all bookmarks -> open required folder -> select a position and right click -> add new bookmark <br />Rather a slow and clumsy process
    * Sort a folder and copy it. If you sort the folder contents then copy and paste them they remain in that order when pasted.
There are add-ons but I have not tried them. For example
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/simplesort-bookmarks/
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/auto-sort-bookmarks/
There will be others available and take note of the advice to backup bookmarks manaully.

  • How to link individual picker view selections to download an individual file from a website or other location such as dropbox using Xcode?

Alright, the question I have has to deal with how to link an app to a website to download files. How, or is it even possible to link individual picker view selections to download an individual file from a website or other location such as dropbox using xcode. Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but if anyone can help or can send a link to a place that can, I would greatly appreciate it!

I am not getting anywhere with deploying my application or
    applet.
I have set up my bc4j project. It contains all my VO info,
    links, application module. (proj a)
I then have another project with DbInfo in it(has all my rowset
info), Multiple Frames, and my Applet.java file.
Actually I have an Applet.java file and a Application.java file
because I was seeing if both/either worked. Anyway they seem the
same, except for that extra window that comes up when you run the
    applet.
I follow the steps in the oracle directions (from earlier post).
And all seems ok. But at ---->
[*] Select the subdirectory under myhtml where your applet's HTML
    file
is located, and enter the directory path of the 'staging'
    directory you
created in step 3 above, if different from the default.</li>
[*]Select the HTML files that JDeveloper created to run your
    applet.</li>
[*]Select all of the Java source files in your project that make
    up the
    applet.</li>
I have no HTML file associated with my applet, at least that I
    know of.
So do I need to create one, or should it of been done
    automatically.
Also, I trying to figure out what will be the best way to deploy
my project. Applet or stand alone application is what my first
choices have been so far. I have read that there is some issues
with applets being served from a different server than the
database. So a stand alone application was my front runner, but
I haven't gotten either way to work yet.
