How do I specify a different search engine?

I'm running ML with Safari 6. I see that it is possible to choose between one of 3 ****** search engines. How do I specify a search engine that isn't a piece of dog ****? This applies to iOS as well which has the same ****** limitations. Is Apple trying to see how ****** and annoying they can make Safari? Just a question!
Thank you!

These are the three major search engines? Who decided that? What a crock. I'm sorry this smacks of fascism. This is restriction of choice, restriction of the free flow of information. I'd absolutely call it a monoploy practice, collusion. I'm calling my senator to inform them that Apple is enforcing the monopoly of search by Google and Bing.

• How can I have a different search engine in my toolbar than on my start page as I have always had?

Something changed a few days ago on all my computers and I can no longer use two separate search engines on my desktop page, one on my toolbar, and one in the center of my start page. How can that be restored?

• How to keep Google as the search engine on Firefox startpage, no matter what search engine is in the upper-right drop-box?

When I change the search engine in the upper-right search-box (to let's say Wikipedia), the search engine in the middle of the Firefox home-page changes accordingly. I don't want this to happen (I want that to pin to Google). How to do it?

Current Firefox versions use the search engine that is selected in the search bar (click the search engine icon to open the drop down list) on the Navigation Toolbar for searching via the location bar and for the search engine on the about:home page.
If you want to use different search engines then you can install the Keyword Search extension to specify with search engine to use for the location bar and which search engine to use for the about:home page via the Options/Preferences windows of this extension, accessible via the about:addons page (Firefox > Add-ons).

Hi kjkirtley,
Your question is not quite clear about where you are doing the searches from, but I will presume you are trying to do searches from Safari (Apple’s web browser) and it is using Bing as the default search engine. You can set the default search engine to Google by going to the Safari menu > Preferences > General > Default Search Engine:

• Is there a way to use different search engines on the main bar and on the small one without having to switch anything on the small one?

I want to use google when I type to search in the main bar and wikipedia on the small search bar on the right. However, they both seem to use the same search engine, depending on which one I've chosen on the small search bar. I want them to use different ones without having to click and change engines. How can I do that?

You can use a (one letter) keyword search on the location/address bar and assign a keyword via "Manage Search Engines".
You can use the Keyword Search extension to specify which search engine to use for searching via the location/address bar.

This extension claims to be able to divert your search requests to any specified search engine:

I m created a website for submitting a url to major search engine, i have a list of search engines, but how do i submit any url automatically to a searchengine through servlet.

Each search engine is different. So go to each one and find their rules. Here's Google's rules for example:

• How do I change my default search engine from Google to Start Page?

I don't like to use Google because there are privacy issues which Google is only too happy to violate and hand over to parties I do not want.
I want to be able to use StartPage instead of Google when I type something in the URL space and I want StartPage to be my default home page (already is), default small box search (already is) and defalut search engine (which it is not).
Thanks!

See:
Note that starting with Firefox 23 it will no longer be possible to specify the search engine for the location bar via the keyword.URL pref.
In Firefox 23+ the search engine used in the location bar is the search engine that is selected in the Search Bar.
You can consider to use a (one letter) keyword search for searching via the location bar.
You can set a keyword for an installed search engine via Manage Search Engines (click the search engines icon on the search bar).

• How do I change my default Search Engine from Yahoo to Google permanently?

Every time I restart Firefox my search engine reverts back to yahoo, how do I fix this permanently. I only want to use google to search for things it is much more efficient. Is there some firefox connection to yahoo that is causing this?

None of above worked for me.
This did:
"In your address bar, type in: “about:config”
Inside of the filter search box, type in:
browser.search.defaultenginename
Double click that entry (or right click and choose “Modify”) and then type in the name of the search engine you wish to have as the default search engine. It must be one that you already have installed and also make sure you type in the name correctly.
Now if you type in “Yahoo”, restart Firefox and when your browser comes back up you will see the red Yahoo “Y” and Yahoo as your default search engine."
(as found on http://www.searchenginejournal.com/change-your-default-search-engine-in-firefox-google-chrome-ie/24378/)
Since I wanted to be rid of Yahoo and get Google back - in the last part instead of typing "Yahoo" I typed "Google".
That's it.

• How do I change my default search engine back to google

my default search engine is ask.com
I changed my home page to be goggle but its the old firefox start unlike the one it shows when it sent me to ask :(
Question
Every time I get online my search engine is ask UI have typed in google into my about:config settings many times yet my search engine remaines ASK (it changes back every time and iI used the google URL on firefox's help page)how do I fix this so that my search remaines with goole not ASK because I hate ASK(no offense ask).

Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

• How do I change my default search engine in the URL bar back to Google after my ISP replaced my default search engine with their own?

Before I changed internet service providers, I could type my search queries into the url bar and receive search results from Google. After I switched ISPs, my queries typed into the url bar are put into my new ISP's horrible search engine. How do I change it back?
I've already tried going to about:config and changing the value of the keyword.URL preference to "http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=" but that didn't fix my problem.
New information since creation of the post:
My ISP is Optimum. I have opted out of DNS Assistance and still have seen no change.
When my search term is two words or more, I am directed to Google search results. If my search term is only one word, however, I am still directed to Optimum's search results.

Hello samshine, try to reset the '''browser.search.defaultenginename''' in about:config and check it again.
thank you
