How do I start an iMessage conversation?

I updated my iPhone to the new iOS software. I can't figure out how to start an iMessage conversation. And there is no iMessage app. Help me figure this out!!! Thanks

That's what I've said.
iMessage uses different path to get to its destination. iMessage uses Wi-Fi (hence I mentioned iPod Touch since it will make it clear that no 3G is involved). iMessage without the Wi-FI connection will be just SMS texting and it has nothing do with iMessage. (iPod Touch cannot do SMS) It a fine distinction.

You can't. You can sign out of messages and turn it off, but you can't do what you would like to do. You can send feedback to Apple.

If you made a backup of the device while the conversation was on the phone, you can restore to that backup. If you did not do a backup of the device with the conversation on it, then the conversation is gone.

How do you continue an iMessage conversation across multiple devices?

I don't understand how to continue a discussion from one device to another. I have the same email address in my iMessage settings on my iPhone and my iPad but I can't see the conversation on my iPad as I would have expected.

Here's a step-by-step, some/all of this you may already have done, just check through it first, then if it's still not working post a reply...
On your iPad, go to Settings app, select Messages. Check that iMessage is turned on.
The 'Receive At' address should be your Apple ID email address. If not, change it to be that.
On your iPhone, also go to Settings, Messages. iMessage should be turned on there too.
For messages to sync, this must be the same email address as your iPad, i.e. your Apple ID email.
In 'Caller ID', set this as the email address, NOT your phone number.
Try sending a message to a friend (who has iMessage enabled) from your iPad, then send a message to them from your iPhone. (Some users suggest first deleting any previous message threads from this person, other say it won't matter either way. I did delete mine first.)
When anyone with iMessage sends YOU a message, they must choose your email address (your Apple ID one) to send to, not your phone number. (i.e. in Contacts on their iPhone for example, they should add your email address there if they don't already have it entered.) If someone from their iPhone sends you a message to your phone number for example, it will only appear on your phone, not on your iPad.

When you add your Apple ID to your iPhone for iMessage it links your phone number to your Apple ID (Hint: on an iPhone you don't need to add an Apple ID to iMessage)
To unlink your phone number from Apple ID go to (on iPhone) Settings>Messages>Send & Receive>Tap on Apple ID>Choose Sign out. That's it!

Restore an iMessage conversation

How can I restore an iMessage conversation that was deleted by accident from my iPhone 5s? The conversation is backed up on my iPad, but I can't sync it with my phone. And there are 8 unread texts from that convo. that I can't delete in my phone. I don't want to reset my phone, simply either add back that conversation or restore the phone to a point just before I deleted the conversation.

You can restore the conversation from one of 2 sources, either an iCloud Backup that was made before the messages were deleted, or from an iTunes backup made beforehand. This article will help you do either of those things of the backup is recent enough for you:

Hi,
Previously iChat had tried a Last Chat/IM option when using Saved Transcripts - which itself was an option.
iChat has also tried "Saving" the Last Chat by leaving a Chat window open and using something similar to the Lion method of showing an app in the state is was closed in.
In Messages the option to Save Transcripts has been removed and Chats or all types are saved as a matter of course.
What this tends to mean for your iChat style Buddy Chats is that it opens all the Transcripts for that buddy as a sort of History you can scroll back through if you want (I have some Buddies with saved chats gong back to 2004)
With the Syncing of iMessages with iPhones and iPads (or Touches) then it seems this works slightly differently.
Although you can delete the chat and the contents of the Chat as separate action it is true that in the Beta as soon as you connect to the same Contact that the contents of the previous chats are shown to you.
I have found that Messages stores a data base of info on iMessages in Your Home Folder/Library/Messages
I have found that deleting this chat-db removes the "History" that keep popping up.
By default the Saved "iChats" are also stored in the Home Folder/Documents/iChats (At least this is the default place iChat used and they go to the same iChats folder where ever you had it)
Some people claim removing iMessages saved here stops the "History" reappearing.
In Lion the only access to the Home Folder/Library is via the Finder's Go Menu and hiding down the ALT key

I believe some how some way my iPhone or appleID has been hacked into. My iPhone sent 3 iMessages out that I did not type or send - 2 while I was sleeping and one while I was in mid imessage conversation. Please help if you know anything about this!

I believe that my iPhone or apple ID has been hacked into. Three imessages were sent from my phone that I did not type or send - two while I was asleep at 1:15am and in the morning during an iMessage conversation. These messages were to my boyfriend about my boss. Apple and AT&T have been somewhat helpful but both are pointing fingers at the others saying they cannot track the message or see if my personal information has been compromised. I feel extremely violated because this hacker knows who my boyfriend is and who my boss is and I just started this job two weeks ago! I am about to go to the police because this person is trying to taint my good reputation and destroy my relationships at work and in my personal life. Does anyone have any incite on how this could be done and is there any way to trace where those three iMessages were generated from??

No I have my own iPhone iPad and MacBook so everything is set up on devices that are mine and as far as I know I never connected to anyone else's device and logged with my apple ID. IMessage not working when I start a new conversation iOS 6

Hey guys, the thing now is that since I updated my iPhone 4S to iOS 6 is like the phone does not recognize my iMessage contacts.
I can use iMessage, but the thing is that I only can send an iMessage if I go to my messages box and open an old iMessage conversation.
If I want to start a new conversartion the send button never turns blue.
I even tryied from Siri. Didn't work.
It is not so bad but still annoying.
As an additional information, in Ecuador, they just added a new digit in the international code. It shouldn't be a problem because my mobile number is already accepted by iMessage on my iphone settings.
Hope you can help guys. I would be very grateful.

UPDATE:
I just discovered that the problem is that from my Messages software in my iMac mobile numbers are not recognized (even if they were accepted on the iMessage settings on my phone).
If I send a message to my imessage contact, that contact receives it as a normal SMS but when he answers it is sent as an iMessage and then I can reply as an iMessage.
But it is not possible to avoid the waste of that SMS.
Maybe is the new digit thing.
