How do I start up from disk utilitie.

My Mail keeps crashing. It seems to be a permission problem. I want to start up from Disk Utilities to fix it. Can't remember how.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • How do you start up from disk

My 2007 iMac has become very sluggish.  The little colorful round ball justs spins and spins so much now.  I went to Disk Utility and for the first time selected verify disk.  Part way through the verification I got an error message telling me "The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.", "Error: this disk needs to be repaired.  Start up y...isc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk."  The problem apparently comes from "invalid volume file count" and "invalid volume directory count".
I am sure this is a simple task for most but I am unsure how to proceed.  I have my original OS X Leopard disk and my upgraded OS X Snow Leopard disc. Any direction in how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Before you do ANYTHING make sure you have a good a backup. I see you have a Time Capsule to check to see if your backup is OK.
Next Insert the original Leopard Install disk in the Superdrive. Restart, when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option key and choose the Install Disk. Select the language then click the Utilities Menu and choose Disk Utility. Run Repair Disk from there, you will need to run Repair Disk multiple times until no errors are found. If you continue to get errors take the machine into an Apple Store or AASP to have the HD replaced. Make sure you let them know  you have been backing up on Time Capsule and want to restore your backup from there.

  • Can't start up from disk

when I hold down the c key with a system disk in the drive, the computer starts up, but offers to install a new system... How do I just get it to start up from the disk (so I can run disk utility on my hd)?
This is on my eMac, 1.25 GHz, 1.25 GB RAM, running 10.4.11
    Thanks

It should first ask you to select your language. After you choose your language, click the "Utilities" menu to find Disk Utility.

  • How do you start up from an external hard drive

I read the one post about this but i was un clear. Im trying to find out how to do this for my friend with a G3 that is no longer working. They have an external hard drive that is firewire and the newest version of tiger. So if someone could give me a step by step guide how to install tiger on the external hard drive and then run it that way, that would be great. Thanks to anyone who answers and helps.

I was fooling around with my iBook and an external harddrive where I used CarbonCloner to clone my system. When that was done I found this link:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75459
    Here it says I should:
    Press Option-Command-Shift-Delete during startup
Bypass primary startup volume and seek a different startup volume (such as a CD or external disk)
I tried this and my iBook started up from my external harddrive....I think.....i actually couldn't tell the difference by looking at the desktop, everything seemed exactly the same, I guess because I booted from a cloned system....but when I used the keyboard sequence above, I noticed my external harddrive spinning and thought it was doing the work to start up my computer.
I don't think starting your computer using Target disc mode is right for you....

  • How do I start up from an external HDD?

My G4 crashed last night, so I need to start up from my external HDD which has the OS installed on it too, to repair my normal Internal start up drive.
I've forgotten how though and I need some important files within the next half hour.
If anyone knows how, please let me know ASAP.
    Thanks.

    Hi Merc
First of all, let me caution you that drive/data recovery and urgent access to your files are pretty much mutually exclusive. If your data can be recovered, you'll need to exercise patience.
Second, do you have a backup of your valuable data? If so, how old is it, and how much effort would it be to bring it up to current status?
If you don't have a backup, let me recommend that you set one up as soon as this process is done.
So, first, run Disk Utility either from the secondary drive (an OS X volume, I assume?) or from your install CDs. (Running it from the drive will be a bit faster.) If Disk Utility is able to see your primary volume, run Repair Disk on it and see if that corrects the issue.
If that doesn't work, my next recommendation would be to purchase and run DiskWarrior. You can get a download as soon as you purchase it, and run it from your secondary drive. If your drive issue is a corrupted directory (very common), DiskWarrior will attempt to repair it. This program is a great investment, and I'd recommend it for almost any Mac user.
If your drive issue is physical (ie, it's dead, and no software can recover it), there's not much you can do at home, but a specialised data recovery service may be able to help you.
    Good luck!
    Matt

  • How do I install software from disk on Macbook Air?

I have an external CD player but the Macbook Air doesn't seem to recognise it. So how do I get my software from disk onto my Macbook?

I did not get the "This document is not recognised do you want to choose an application to open it with" error message.  It's just that it is not recognizing any content at all on the CD in Finder.  I have used this external CD drive before with this Macbook.  I also tried to open the docs through Word and it again showed that a CD was in "Devices" as a "Remote Disc" but does not recognize any of the docs on the CD.

  • PLEASE HELP: How to format ext HD with Disk Utilities (FAT32 format)

    Hi,
Please help. I need to format a 360 GB Lacie Hard-drive on FAT32 format. How can I do it with the Disk Utilities Application? I tried but only see Apple extended, extended (journaled), MS-dos, and others, but no FAT32. Also, if the Hard drive has 20 GB of documents, can a format the resto of the drive and leave this info intact? If so how can I do it. Thanks so much. I appreciate your help.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

You have to backup any data on the hard drive first.
Formatting erases anything on the partition which in your case is the entire hard drive. It is possible to create more than one partition on the hard drive but that process will also delete any data on the hard drive.

  • How to always start up in disk select mode?

How do I do that? Sometimes when I need to start my bootcamp partition to make some changes to Windows, and I just forgot to hold the Option key, I'll just have to wait for it to boot up in Mac OS, and then restart again. How do I just make the computer always start up in disk select mode, so I don't have to hold the Option key?

the only way to do that is by using rEFIt

  • My Macbook won't start, and I must reinstall the disk. I haven't used time machine to back up, and I want to use an external drive to back up now. How can i do this from the utilities page?

I am currently in Zambia on missions work and my computer is constantly exposed to heat. I have just been trying to avoid using it during the hottest part of the day. Today though, I started it up and it was stuck on the grey page with the rotating circle for over an hour, then once the circle left, it remained frozen on the gray page. I used command + r at startup to go to the utilities page to analyze the disk. It found that there were problems with the disk, but then it could not fix those problems and told me to backup as much information as I could and reinstall or redo it all. I haven't ever used time machine to back up any of my information, but i have an external drive that I can use right now to backup my files. I can't get into my computer though to backup the files. How can I use this external drive to backup my files while the computer is currently messed up? Please help.

    Emergency Backups (Data Recovery)
    A)          Format an external disk:
(This will erase all data on the external disk.)
Boot in recovery mode (power then Command-R).
Alternative: Network recovery boot (power then Command-Option-R keys)
To format (and erase) the destination recovery disk:
Plug in the drive you are about to erase.
Select the volume that is NOT your system disk.
              Click on Partition.
Pull down under Partition Layout to 1 Partition.
              Click on Options…
              Select GUID Partition Table.
Name: Emergency Backup (or whatever you prefer)
Format: Select Mac OS Extended (journaled)
              Click Apply.
              Click Partition.
    B)          Try to boot in Safe Mode (power then Shift key).
(This will be a slow boot.  Be patient.)
If it won’t boot in Safe Mode, jump to C.
If it boots in Safe Mode, try to boot in normal mode.
If that fixed your problem then start a Time Machine backup.
                        http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
                        https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4055
If not, boot in Safe Mode again.
              Go > Computer.
Double click on the system disk.
Drag the Users folder to the recovery disk.
    C)          To clone the disk:
              Boot in recovery mode.
              Select Disk Utility.
Try to repair the system disk twice.
Whether or not the repair succeeds:
Drag and drop the system disk to Source:
Drag an drop Emergency Backup to Destination:
(Take care not to reverse this order.)
Click Restore (the lower Restore button).
Once your system is healthy, maintain two reasonably current backups.  (Time machine restores can fail.)
Create either two Time Machine backups (good) or one or more Time Machine backup(s) and one or more bootable-clone backup(s) (better).
Use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to create bootable-clone recovery disks.

  • How can i backup files in Disk utilities, files from HD to exHD?

I'm having some issue with my Macbook Pro, it turns to be slow and lag. I would like to backup my data and format it, but i could log into it.
i can only enter Mac OS X Utilities.

That's a signal that the hard disk is damaged. On OS X Utilities, you can try to make a clone of the hard disk with Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and go to Restore tab.
Drag an external disk to Destination box and press Restore.
If it doesn't work, you can use Target Disk Mode to connect your Mac to another one using a FireWire cable and transfer all your files. If not, use DiskWarrior to recover data. Finally, take the Mac to an Apple Store
