How do I stop about:blank popups?

Firefox has recently begun opening "New Tab" with a URL called about:blank. Since I've set up popup pages to open in tabs, the about:blank pages pop up in tabs. This happens every time I open FF; if I leave the browser open for several hours it will have several about:blank tabs opened. I've read that "about blank" popups have been associated with a virus or malware and that these tend to redirect users to other pages. However, I have run virus scans and spyware/malware scans and have come up empty and the about:blank popups don't redirect me anywhere else.
How can I stop about:blank popup pages? They're annoying as heck.

Hi,
Please check if this happens in a [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles new profile]. If the new profile is okay, you can [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems Reset Firefox] on the old (previous) profile via '''Help''' ('''Alt''' + '''H''') > '''Troubleshooting Information'''.

  • How do I stop about blank pop ups that are caused by Firefox? These are blocked ny my virus protection and ar

Ok my virus protection, I use Kaspersky, is detecting a packer every time I try to load Farmville on Facebook. This results in the game reloading over and over again. These pop up quickly with about blank in the address but nothing else. The path for this leads to Firefox...C:\Users\Toshiba\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\yipb6gme.default\Cache\C\4D\C1121d01. This was the last one shown in the list. It's a Swf2Swc. Today I have 24 at various times with 2 to 3 each time I tried to load Farmville. When my virus protection stopped them Farmville reloaded so I was never able to actually get into it.
    How can I stop these.
Just so you know I did try safe mode with the same results

  • How do I stop the Adobe Popup when printing?

I am constantly creating PDF files using Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0. I create from multiple programs: Office Word, Excel, Paint, Etc. as well as AutoCADD.  I create them using Adobe as a printer, thus printing to PDF. Once the PDF has been created from the other program via printing to Adobe, the new PDF file pops up for viewing. I am ok with this; however I then click onto another program and after a few second the PDF pops up again. Even if I close it a few seconds later it pops up again. When I am printing multiple sheets out of a program I am jumping back and forth and the popup feature slows me up big-time or causes me to mess up the files I am working with.
How do I stop the Adobe Popup?

That fixed the problem of the printing taking over the screen multiple times. I would like to have a solution where the finished file shows "PDF results" once, letting me know that the file has been created successfully, then let me get back to another program. Maybe this can be an upgrade with the next version.

  • How do I fix "about:blank" virus or does firefox have to fix something???

in firefox I open web site at USAA or Schwab and click on a link to open another window and it opens as "about:blank" and there is no information. This does not happen on all links and does not occur if I am in Internet Explorer. I use Micro Trend 2012 for security. I did a internet search for "about:blank" and is seems this is a virus of some sort.

  • How to permanently remove about:blank browser hijacker?

I would like to know if anyone has successfully removed about:blank browser hijacker. I have been seeing about:blank show up and keep trying different ways to remove it and it seems to work temporarily but comes back. I have cleared history, cookies, cache all recommended by other users but it doesn't last. Can anyone help?

  • How do I stop a mini-popup from appearing when I mark text?

When I drag across text to mark it for copying, or click somewhere to start a mark which will be completed by a shift-click, a mini popup often oblterates the area, offering me "copy", "move" etc, and the pop-up cannot be moved to allow completion of the mark, but can be removed only by clicking on the edge of the window, which loses my marking, so I must start again and often suffer a similar pop-up, with the same result. (The pop-up offers no facilities which are not more easily obtained otherwise.) How can I defend against it?

I don't think that's a built-in feature of Firefox. It could be part of a particular web site's editor or it could be added by an add-on.
To quickly see whether it is from an add-on, you could try Firefox's Safe Mode.
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, try starting Firefox in Firefox
[http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode Safe Mode]. Be careful not to "reset" anything permanently if you didn't back up.
Does that return selections to normal behavior?

  • How do I stop the Mozilla popups I am getting since the last update

Almost every website I go to now, I get at least 1 popup. They are 'suggestions' for other sites I might be looking for, or surveys, or ads, almost anything. I also get a strip at the bottom offering for Mozilla to track where I go. I am 67 years old using a laptop as my exclusive computer. These things take up my bandwidth and my computer memory. And they are NEVER interesting to me. I am ready to find a new system for accessing the internet. I quit Internet explorer as it tried to run my computer for me now Mozilla is trying the same.

Hi Fred, it's pretty likely that you picked up an unwanted add-on. It may be time to clean house a bit.
Try disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized add-ons on the following page. If it doesn't sound like something you use every day, disable it. It's easy to re-enable later if you find that some important function is missing.
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category
Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    Do you notice any change?
Also, to avoid deceptive or unofficial downloads masquerading as upgrades, I suggest always using the "About Firefox" dialog to start your updates.
Help > About Firefox > "Check for Updates" button

  • When I open a pdf file, Firefox opens a blank window, then the file opens in a Adobe Reader window. How can I stop the blank window?

Whether I am using Firefox 3.6.8 or Thunderbird 3.0.6, clicking on a pdf file opens a new window. After a few seconds the pdf file opens in a separate Adobe Reader window. When I am done with that and close it, I still have to go back and close out the blank window. Got to be a configuration issue some place. I have tried several settings under Tools/Options, but haven't found the right setting yet. Any suggestions?

Thank you very much for the reply. I followed your instructions. This fixed half of the problem. Links to pdf files that are on web pages now come up with a box that asks if I want to open or save the file, without a blank browser window in the background. That is great.
When I tested the fix with pdf file links in email, the problem still exists. I tested links in Outlook Express, Yahoo mail, and Gmail. Any time I click on a pdf link in an email, a blank Firefox window opens and then I get the small window that asks me if I want to open or save the file. Sounds like this is a configuration issue, not a technical problem. Thanks for your help.

  • How do I stop all the popups

The browser crashes and several bogus ads appear for pc backup etc...if an actal site does load it is covered on ads.

    Hi covertwo,
Thank you for your question, I understand that you have an issue with pop ups. If it is for your pc please run a malware scan. Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

[http://windows.microsoft.com/MSE Microsoft Security Essentials] is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

  • Firefox displays a popup website but then blocks access to it. How can I stop the initial popup from occurring?

The webpage lnksr.com pops up a screen that then attempts to redirect to a spurious survey. I wish to block this web site, and, at the moment, only this web site. None of the tools available within Firefox seem to allow me to do this. As can be seen from the screen shot, it seems to Friefox that is generating the screen call. Thanks for any ideas.
