How do I stop autoplay?

I download audio files from the internet. iTunes automatically starts playing that file. That's okay, but iTunes just continues from the main iTunes library playing each file in order. I can't seem to find any setting to tell iTunes to not just play every file in the library. Part of the probelm is that these are recordings of conversations and as they go from one to the next there is no way to tell that it is a different recording until someone not in the original recording speaks up.
I don't remember this being a problem before the current version of iTunes, so I think there must be a setting that was changed in the upgrade.

June 2013: videos on websites start playing without my permission, how to stop this?
What I tried:
I uninstalled Adobe Flash (disabling Flash add-on didn't work), existing "stop autoplay" add-ons are no longer working according to reviews, tried solution described in "How can I stop videos on websites from automatically playing?" (Type in the address bar: about:config Then search for: plugins.click_to_play Double click and it will be set to true) - doesn't stop videos from playing either. Sent feedback to FireFox about the issue.
From what I had read in reviews, this is not only about Flash: YouTube disabled add-ons and searches for anything that can play videos installed in Windows, including using HTML5 for this. Have no information how other websites do it.
How to stop this?

For those of you who do not wish to use StopTube, the click to play plugin in the about:config works. You may just be missing one final step. Once you set the boolean to true, navigate to your firefox addons page and look for shockwave (adobe) flash plugin or whatever you use to play videos. Select the drop down to "ask to activate" and there you have it. When the boolean was set to false, the "ask to activate" dropdown option was unavailable.

Do you mean the autoplay which pops up after inserting a disk into the CD/DVD drive?
If yes, so got to the My computer, right click on the CD drive and choose the properties.
There please enter the Auto play tab. Choose in the field Actions the first option and mark take no action.

How do you stop HTML5 video from autoplaying?

I don't want video to play automatically. Flashblock achieves this for flash videos, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do the same thing for html5 video (on vine, for example).
None of the about:config settings appear to have any effect, and html5 isn't handled by a plugin so click to activate doesn't do anything either.

I confirm `flash-control`stops autoplay for html5 and old Flash videos (attached screen), plus it has a comprehensive little FAQ right on the extension page :)
Unlike `about:config` and other extensions I tried in vain.

How Can I Stop My Photoshop Crashing after every 2/3 actions?

Hi, ive recently got photoshop cs6 and after every 2/3 actions i get a message saying 'photoshop isnt working' or something like that then i get told to 'close program'
how can i stop this happening?

How do i stop Itunes auto creating playlists and auto playing imports?

HELP NEEDED - My PC crashed so i rebuilt with Windows 7, installed the latest itunes and so far so good. I then had to import my music library, first thing i noticed which it never did before, when i import folders it will automatically create a playlist for some of those imports, it doesn't create a playlist for every folder or album only some almost as if the smart playlist option is activated...how do i stop this happening? Second, when i import a folder Itunes autoplays the first song in each folder as it imports so it may play 2 seconds of a song or it may play a full song depending on the size of the folder, very annoying and because i have around 100 GB of music to import very very frustrating.

The current build of iTunes (10.4.1.10) appears to have a couple of issues with M3U playlists. The first is that when you import an M3U playlist, the list is created, and any files not already in the library it are added to it, but for some reason they just don't get added to the playlist. Secondly, when adding folders to the library, iTunes is also attempting to add any M3U playlists that it finds as well as any other valid media files not already in the library. The upshot is that iTunes may create a bunch of empty playlists corresponding to any M3U files you have scattered through your folders.
Use iTunes Folder Watch to scan your media folders for new files (and also for dead tracks) to avoid the issue. This is a more effective way of importing new media than simply adding in the entire media folder over and over again.
If you already have empty playlists you are struggling to delete manually then I've written a script for just that purpose called KillEmptyPlaylists.
As and when the time comes that you do want to import an M3U playlist then I have written another script to workaround the current difficulty called ImportM3U which does just what it says. It will also convert and add any WMA files present in the list on the fly whereas iTunes would normally ignore these.

I purchased a new Subaru and every time I start the car my paired iPhone auto-plays music. How do I stop the music from playing automatically?

This is a funny thread! I actually won't buy a car that WON'T automatically autoplay my music on my phone! I want that feature all the time! But we all have different likes and dislikes, right? Anyway, I rent cars almost every week, and here is what I can tell you about autoplay and bluetooth. When a car says it has bluetooth for your phone... there is a huge spectrum of what that actually means. Here are the seven levels of "bluetooth support" I have personally seen in cars:
1. Some cars can't play music at all, they only do the phone. I call this "ghetto bluetooth". The infinity G37 convertible does this in 2009, but 2010 and beyond, they can now do music.
2. Some cars can do music, but not control it in any way. You have to do all of that via the phone. Poor.
3. Some cars can do music and let you start/stop/skip around/shuffle etc. But they can not autoplay on car start up. So people who say "it works fine in my car" may have this level of bluetooth technology, and the car actually can't do more.
4. Some cars can do autoplay, but only of mp3s using the phones player.
5. Some cars can do autoplay, and will even launch your last used app! So if you were listening to Pandora on the way to the store. Get out. Get in. Turn the car on, suddely Pandora resumes!!! This is a huge feature for me. When a car autoplays my mp3s instead, I find that very frustrating.
6. Some cars can show song details such as name and artist.
7. Finally, the state of the art is that they do everything in 5 and 6, but also display cover art for your music as well. That's the most exciting level of technology for me.
So as we look at why your iPhone is autoplaying, or not, the first thing to realize is your car itself is a HUGE variable in what is happening. And many have an autoplay setting in the bluetooth or audio setup.
Question 1: can your car autoplay at all? Maybe not. If it does, is there a setting to stop it if you don't want it?
Next, I have not been in any cars that autoplay my phone when the radio is off or set to a different band such as FM/AM/Satelite/Aux In, etc.
Question 2: If you have the radio off, does the phone still autoplay? If not, your phone is doing well, and it seems the car is sending the autoplay signal.
Question 3: When your car is on a different band other than bluetooth, does the phone still autoplay? If in Q2 or Q3 your phone autoplays, then this is in fact a phone problem. The phone detects bluetooth (probably to connect to phone features even if the radio isn't on or needed) and autoplays itself. But I find this unlikely. I always have my bluetooth on, and I've never witnessed my phone suddenly play music because it connected to a bluetooth source! I wish it would, actually, because there is this sweet 2009 infinity I would buy.
My gut tells me that if the phone is misbehaving, it is a car issue, not a phone issue, but using the above three questions, I could quickly find where the real problem lies.
Question 4: Does your phone autoplay music when connecting to a non-car bluetooth? If not, that is more evidence that it is the car sending an autoplay signal, not the phone. I have a bluetooth headset. If I turn it on, my phone does not suddenly start to play. Nor does it start to play when I connect to my Jabra handsfree speakerphone.

I started using Apple ID in 2011 when iCloud was not exist and was forced to use non-apple e-mail adress as primary ID.
So I used GMail mailbox.
When iCloud was started I created my account but unfortunatelly can't remove this Gmail address from my Apple ID and replace it with icloud mail address.
I was VERY dissapointed because I don't want to use "outside" mailbox to get letters from Apple and ny ID.
In fact I see the Apple old users and fans discrimination.
When creating new user accounts are free to create a box on the iCloud mail and use it as a primary ID, and the only ONE.
At the same time the old user is obliged to keep third-party mail box like Gmail etc. as the primary and can not get such an opportunity, as a new user
This is extremely inconvenient and a VERY strange logical.
For example, now I want to stop using this mailbox on Gmail but I can not do that because in this case I lose access to my ID, or run the risk that someone in the future will create a box with the same name on Gmail (when name will be free and available) and will automatically get access to my accounts on Apple and to my Apple ID.
Now, to avoid this, your team, I offer the only way out: ID, create anew.
Of course it's possible, but then:
- I lose all my purchases for 3 years and will be forced to make them again and pay money for the second time for my purchases
- Lose access to the familiar iCloud e-mail address who now serves as secondary ID because this e-mail address is almost no longer available and will never be released in future.
And now answer me for ONLY TWO questions:
- WHERE IS LOGIC?

You cannot make your @icloud.com address the login address for the ID. However you can change your ID, currently a Gmail one, to any other functioning non-Apple email address. The Gmail address would then no longer access your account, and so even if someone were to obtain posession of it (is that even possible) it wouldn't allow them to get into your account.
If you want to change your ID to another email address please follow the procedure outlined below, particularly noting the first step.
Firstly, if you have 'Find My iPhone/iPad/iMac' enabled on any of your devices, turn it off.
Create a new email address, for example at Yahoo or Gmail, or anywhere convenient (or you can use an existing address as long as it has never been associated with an Apple ID).
Go to http://appleid.apple.com and click 'Manage your Apple ID'. Sign in with the current ID.
Where it says 'Apple ID and primary email address' and gives your current ID email address, click 'edit'.
Enter your new address and click 'Save changes'.
Now you will need to go to each of your devices and sign out in System Preferences (or Settings)>iCloud - 'Sign out' on a Mac, 'Delete this account' on an iOS device (this will not delete the account from the server).
Then sign back in with your new ID. Your iCloud data will disappear from your devices when you sign out, but reappear when you sign back in.
I re-iterate: before you start, turn off 'Find My Mac' (or whatever) or you will need the services of Support.

This is my first post, so please treat me gently
My partner and me have both just got 3g iphones, we love them but have one slight prob with them.
When we connect our phones to our itunes account, contact details from both phones are replaced with all the contacts from each of the 2 phones.
How can we stop this happening? i.e. ensure that my contacts stop on my iphone only and my partners contacts on their iphone only? (and we don't get each others).
Sorry if this has been answered before, but I couldn't find it when searching.

Hey Rawlad,
You can create a folder in Outlook or Windows Address Book and then sync the selected folder.
In iTunes, just click the iPhone> Info tab> Check sync contacts> Selected groups.
You can also Reset the Sync History in the iTunes preferences window as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1692
Resetting the Sync History would would make iTunes ask if you want to merge or replace contacts.
Make sure you have at least one contact syncing from the PC before choosing the merge option, so they can merge.

An icloud account is designed to be used by one user to keep his/her devices in sync.
If you have muitiple family members or friends using the same account as yours, then have them get their own Apple IDs and icloud accounts.
If you mean you want to stop the sharing between all your devices, then on any one device, go to Settings>icloud and turn off the services you don't want that device to share/sync. Or turn off icloud altogether if that's what you want.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
When you are the Family Sharing organizer, purchases are billed to your account unless the family member making purchases has an iTunes Gift Card or iTunes credit on their account. The attached article has more information on how this process works.

What I may suggest in your situation would be to discontinue the Family Sharing and use iCloud calendar sharing. Using this method keeps your accounts separate but allows you to still share your calendar.

1) In a Finder window highlight a file of the kind you want to change the application to open that kind of file.
2) While that file is highlighted, select File > Get Info or press command (apple or propeller icon) + i to get a file information window.
3) In the lower part of the info window there is an "open with" menu with a list of applications.
4) If your application is already in the box then it is the default application for opening that kind of file and you don't need to do anything more. Close the get info window.
5) If the application showing in the menu is not the one with which you wish to open the file then select a new application. If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
6) If you wish to change all files of this type to open with this application in future, make sure the "change all" button is selected.
7) Close the get info window.
