How do I stop contacts duplicating

how do I stop my contact from duplicating every time I sync Iphone

You probably have duplicate accounts set up in iCloud, this would creat duplicates. I would recommend that you repost in the iCloud on my Mac forum and see if someone can give you some  pointers.

  • How can I stop contacts duplicating

On iPhone and iPad, all contacts appear once; however, on my MacBook Pro there are two copies of all the contacts. I have checked to ensure the box isn't checked on either device to "Sync Address Book Contacts" (they are being synced with iCloud).
Any idea to delete the duplicates without doing it ine at a time?

Actually, today I've noticed that there are lots more contacts on my iPad compared to either my MacBook Pro or my iPhone, despite the fact that they are all synced to the same iCloud account - any explanation?

Stop syncing them to the same source. If you're sharing an iCloud account with someone, don't do that.

    Hello collins57,
Thanks for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It seems like your iPhone contacts have been duplicated.
Did this occur after turning on iCloud? If these contacts are duplicated after setting it up, see this article for some helpful steps to resolve the situation:
If you see duplicate contacts after setting up iCloud Contacts - Apple Support
If you've backed up contacts a different way, feel free to reply with some more detail about the method you used.

  • How do I stop contacts updating across two phones?

    Hi
This is my first post, so please treat me gently
My partner and me have both just got 3g iphones, we love them but have one slight prob with them.
When we connect our phones to our itunes account, contact details from both phones are replaced with all the contacts from each of the 2 phones.
How can we stop this happening? i.e. ensure that my contacts stop on my iphone only and my partners contacts on their iphone only? (and we don't get each others).
Sorry if this has been answered before, but I couldn't find it when searching.
Thanks in advance for any help.....
    Rawlad

    Hey Rawlad,
You can create a folder in Outlook or Windows Address Book and then sync the selected folder.
In iTunes, just click the iPhone> Info tab> Check sync contacts> Selected groups.
You can also Reset the Sync History in the iTunes preferences window as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1692
Resetting the Sync History would would make iTunes ask if you want to merge or replace contacts.
Make sure you have at least one contact syncing from the PC before choosing the merge option, so they can merge.

As I stated, I was not replying to the original post. I made very clear, with a quote, to what I was replying. If auburnskys has an issue with my correcting their misinformation, they are free to comment.
but the chances of having the same mail account on a device clearly being used by another person is EXTREMELY unlikely.`
No, it's not unlikely at all, I see it quite frequently. Though I would never consider sharing an email account with someone else, many people (often couples or families) do.

  • How can I stop contacts from my iPad from syncing to my iphone?

I have recently started using an iPhone 4 and I have been using the iPad 3rd gen. for almost a year. The only contacts that I have on my iPad are my clients, but I don't want them on my phone. How can I either make a group file for my clients or stop them from syncing to my phone all together?

how can i transfer contacts from my old phone(android) to my new iphone
I used the following method, which means that your contacts are permanently on your iPhone (the problem with syncing to Gmail in order to 'transfer' contacts is that you need the gmail account to be active all the time in order to see the contacts), take an example of transferring contacts from Sony to iPhone:
    1. Transfer all of your contacts to the Sony Experia's internal storage. It will create a vCard file.
    2. Connect your Sony Experia to a pc
    3. Ensure that you can see the Sony Experia's internal storage files, and identify the location of the vCard file (for me it was in system/PIM)
    4. Set up an email account on your iPhone
    5. Email the vCard file to the email account on your iPhone
    6. Open the vCard file attachment on your iPhone
    7. You should now see your contacts and automatically have the option (in the same screen) to 'Add all xxx Contacts' where xxx is the number of contacts in the vCard file
    Hope that helps.

  • How do i stop iTunes duplicating files?

I have read the past years posts; I do believe they answer this question.
I deleted all the giga bites of duplicate files in the iTunes directory - this took about 5 hours. I then selected edit -> preferences -> advanced and turned off 'keep itunes media folder organised' and 'Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library'. I then - heroically - added in the user folder to itunes and let it run for 15 minutes. Itunes has re-created the duplicates. I'm very unhappy (but am not expecting you to help me with this). But, can you tell me how i stop itunes duplicating all my files when i add in the root folder to iTunes? Please.
More details. When i add the music into iTunes, the files i saved were all the full music title. Itunes duplicates these in two ways. When it simply doubles the number of files, it does so by concatenating the artist's name to the start of the track name separating it from the track name with a '-' and truncating the track name if required. When it triplicates the file name it adds a 1 to the end of the concatenated file name.
I'd really appreciate some help on this, even it it is simply pointing me towards an answer elsewhere on the web. Thank you very much!

The behavior by which iTunes does or does not re-add files it is given is a bit confusing. If the files are located outside the iTunes Media folder, and the library version has been edited since they were added, iTunes will create a new one.
In any case, simply re-adding the whole root folder is asking for trouble.

  • How do I stop contacts from duplicating (and more) on my iMac?

I swtiched from PC to Mac a couple months ago.  I did a lot of contact importing.  I also use iCloud to bring my contacts to my iPad2 and iPhone 4S.  The phone and iPad contacts seem to be ok, but the contacts on my iMac keep multiplying!  I have about 1200 actual contacts, but my contact list sows 33,000.
I already completed deleted my contact list on my Mac and then synched with iPad and got everything down to one each.  Now the Mac keeps multiplying and i have not done any further synching!  Any ideas?

  • How can I stop my contacts from being listed twice in my contact list?

How can I stop contacts in my address book from being listed twice?

That usually happens if you sync your contacts with both a supported application on your computer and over the air with Exchange or iCloud. You do one or the other, not both at the same time. You need to provide more info in order to suggest a solution.

How can i stop itunes duplicating most or all of my songs, i dont seem to do anything and it duplicated something again!!

With your itunes window open, click the iTunes menu at the top of your screen, beside the apple.  Click Quit iTunes at the bottom of the menu to ensure it's actually quit.
Hold option (same as alt) on your keyboard.  Do not let it go.  Click your itunes icon on your dock, while continuing to hold option.  After a very short moment, you should see the library window with the described items show up...
You can then create a new library on your external drive to contain  your movies.  Keep in mind, though, you'll have to repeat the above to select which library you want to use.

  • How do I stop duplicating contacts when I sync with gmail

How do I stop duplicating contacts when I sync my IPod Touch with Gmail?

I don't know if this helps much, but Address Book was basically the same application in a previous version of the Mac OS. Folks still seem to use the terms interchangably though. Similarly, Calendar used to be "iCal."
I believe syncing contacts with Google or iCloud is an either/or proposition - you can't do both. When you sync with either, a copy is saved to your Mac for faster access (like a web browser's cache). I believe there's still an option to save contacts exclusively to your Mac (HD), but I don't think it's either preferred or occurs by default if you have an account such as Gmail/google or iCloud already set up.
I've never played with preferences in Contacts (Address Book), but I do have both google and iCloud accounts associated with my Mac. Under System Preferences:Mail, Contacts & Calendars, you can specify what accounts do on your Mac. If you have multiple accounts set up, a list will appear on the left side. As you select each one, a list of check boxes appear to the right for each service you want to associate with that account. For example, I have an iCloud account for mail, calendars, contacts, and Safari (among others). I have a Gmail account for mail, although it gives me the option of using this account for calendars, etc. For Gmail, the only item I have checked is mail. It's never asked me if I wanted to sync my addresses with Google.
I hope this helps... at least a little. If nothing else, I hope I've solved the "Address Book" mystery ;-)

  • How can I stop a shared address book from duplicating groups?

    Hi,
in our company we want to have one central address book, because we basically all contact the same people.
What I did was create an account on my Mac Mini Server and added that users address book to everyones addressbook app.
The problem I have now is that regularily all groups we have are duplicated, simply by opening the addressbook on a second machine.
Is there a better way of sharing an address book?
How do I stop the duplication of addresses?
    (All machines are Mountain Lion!)
    Thank you for any tips!
    All the best

My husband and I share an Itunes account so use the same email address and password.  Our iphones are now connected and we get each other's messages and share each other's contacts.  How can we stop this happening?

    A couple of different approached:
Create a second AppleID for one of you that includes the email address and phone number you wish to use for messaging, but do not apply it to the iTunes and app store (just keep the current one). My wife and I do this and it works quite well. Also allows for easier syncing of Contacts , notes etc. using icloud if you wish to do that.
Add additional emails/phone numbers to the existing account and change the Send/Receive settings for Messages. this will not fix the Contcts isues for you however.
