How do I stop Dashboard from eating my processor?

Lately my fan has been running way more than usual, and independently of how much work I'm making it do. When this is happening, and I take a peek at the activity monitor, its always one of three "Dashboard Client" processes that is going crazy, not responding, and using up 99% of the CPU power. Is there any way to prevent this without having to kill the process manually each time? It happens a couple of times per hour, so it's really annoying. Also, does there really need to be 3 "dashboard client" processes running at all times?

The "Dashboard Client" processes are the dashboard widgets. Some run only when you open the Dashboard, some run in the background as well. It's a minor annoyance that under Leopard they all just show as "Dashboard Client" (under Tiger, the widget name showed in the process). However, you can select the process that's hogging the CPU, click Inspect, then click the Open Files and Ports tab, and the text there, you'll see the path/name of the widget (e.g. /Library/Widgets/Dictionary.wdgt/Dictionary.widgetplugin). Once you've identified the offending widgets, remove them with the Widget Manager in Dashboard, or see if there are updated versions that may run properly.
As a side note, also check the Kind column in Activity Monitor - I see this more commonly with PPC widgets. AirTrafficControl comes to mind as a widget that had this issue.
One more tip - rather than wait for the fans to spin up to tell you that your CPU is running full out, or leaving Activity Monitor open all the time, you might consider iStat Menus, a preference pane which places a CPU activity monitor (and other monitors as well, if you like) up in the menu bar.

  • How do i stop itunes from eating up 50mb of data each month?

I Have never liked itunes because it is needlessly complicated and confusing. I do not download, or even listen to music. I keep seeing that under cellular, system services, iTunes accounts eats nearly 50mb every month. I have never even opened the iTunes app on my 5s. I only have Game Center, CoC, Safari, maps & weather allowed to access data. Everything else is set to off. In fact over half of my current 500mb of data use has gone to system services. I can save a lot of money if i only had the 500mb plan; however because of these unused background programs, i must keep paying for data that i am not even using. I rarely use my data outside of my wifi at home. And i know the phone is not operating off of wifi at home because i live in a cell phone dead zone. Any suggestions?

That is correct.  This is the way it is ALL HD purchases come with the SD version.

Relax, they weren't converted to PDF.
You can tell by right clicking ANY of them and choosing "Properties". You'll see there that they're STILL .xls or .xlsx files. The "association" has changed and Windows now indicates that they open with Reader, which isn't right.
Where it says "Open With" under the General tab, you can click "Change" and re-select Excel as the default app to open thim.

I just downloaded the latest version of firefox (5.0). Can I delete all the older versions that are still on my drive?
When I call up some web sites sometimes the web site comes up 3 or 4 times...how do I stop this from happening? For example if I click on a link the exact same link comes up 3 or 4 times and I have to manually delete all of them but one.

Do you organise your email into separate folders, or do you just let it accumulate in the Inbox?
I would strongly advise you not to let it sit in the Inbox.
When you see this happening, try right-click on the affected folder, select '''Properties''' then '''Repair Folder'''.
Large folders (actually, a folder in Thunderbird is stored as a file, so it is sensitive to file size limits set by the underlying file system) can be problematic. This is one reason not to let messages collect in one folder. I use Thunderbird's Archive folders so that accumulated mails over several years can happily coexist because they are effectively stored in many small folders. No single mail store folder then exceeds the 2GB or 4GB sizes that have been known to stress the OS. I appreciate that current builds of Thunderbird and a modern 64-bit OS should be able to cope, but practically I find it slows down when given huge files, so I err towards a pragmatic solution; a large number of not very big files.
Archives are searchable, and a Saved Search folder can give you a virtual composite folder allowing access to the entire Archive.

Make 3 different iCloud accounts and use ONLY for iMessage.   That will permanently fix your issue.

  • How do I stop itunes from corrupting it's library on almost a daily basis?

How do I stop itunes from corrupting it's library on almost a daily basis?  It's actually becoming infurating to use, and what's happening is I am losing my downloads since the last automated itunes backup (having to rename & replace the current corrupted library with the last backup which is usually a day or two old).  What can cause this?  Is there ANY alternative to using itunes for Apps (which is the sole use I have for it)?   If not, APPLE PLEASE REMOVE THE NEED FOR THE DATABASE SO IT DOESN'T HAVE THE ABILITY TO CORRUPT ITSELF...  :'(

Things you see in iTunes are stored in various sub folders in your main iTunes folder as in:
Image of folder structure and explanation of different iTunes versions (turingtest2 post) - https://discussions.apple.com/message/13025536 and https://discussions.apple.com/message/17457605
Start iTunes and immediately hold down the option key.  Create a new library somewhere.  Go to your old iTunes folder and drag items to the window for the new library.  Maybe only grab a folder or part of one at a time.  It will copy these items to the new library (so you need lots of extra room on your computer).

  • Imovie 09 How do I stop Imovie from auto importing video from iphoto

Imovie 09 How do I stop Imovie from auto importing video from iphoto.
Hi I've done a lot of searches on how to do this but no answers found.
Imovie is beginning to become really slow because of the large number of video's. It takes 3 minutes to startup. Editing is sometimes slow lot's of spinning beach balls e.t.c.
I would like to only import the video I want to edit and hopefully get a quicker Imovie in the process.
My Iphoto library is about 95 Gbyte in size.
My mac has 4 gb ram and I use the internal disk.
Any other ways to work with Imovie/Iphoto are also welcome.
    regards

I won't get iMovie 9 till Tuesday, but based on what you said I may need to take some precautions. One reason I didn't like iMovie 8 is because it automatically imported everything in iPhoto library. What I'm going to do is create a new iPhoto library before importing the photos/videos from the camera. Or if you already have it in your main iPhoto library copy only the photos you'll use in your iMovie 9 project to the new library. Then start iPhoto while pressing the option key which will allow you to select the new iPhoto library you have created. Then I suppose that when you start iMovie 9 it will automatically import only the photos/videos from the new library.

  • How do I stop firefox from automatically placing the cursor in a textbox?

How do I stop Firefox from automatically placing the cursor in a text box? On certain pages such as Google.com the cursor will be moved to the search text box automatically after a couple seconds from the page loading. So I'll be typing in the address bar or something and then half of what I am typing in the address bar becomes cut off and starts being entered in the Google.com text box for search. The same happens on Facebook.com and the cursor is automatically moved to the Status Update text box. I assume this is a built in "feature" of the web page, but it's damn annoying. Especially when I start typing in my status update box on Facebook before the page completely loads and then halfway through typing (once the page is done loading) my cursor is moved to the starting position of the text area and my text is cut off.
Just the be clear the actual mouse pointer isn't being moved, just the prompt for entering text.
    How can this be stopped?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== Started since I can remember

This problem has grown worse over the last couple of years. I use Firefox on Mac and Windows. I consider this problem to be a bug. Here's why: Event Driven interfaces, e.g., OSX and Windows, are never supposed to change typing-cursor focus WHILE SOMEONE'S TYPING!!!
Firefox allows websites to change focus WHILE USERS TYPE!
Hey, sorry for the caps, but I haven't used those for awhile and that's kind of fun. But really, more and more websites steal typing-cursor focus WHILE USERS TYPE.
Efff them, but really, Eff Firefox for allowing this.
It's almost like a symptom of our hyper scattered age where our attention jumps here and there.
But really... I love Firefox, some of my best friends are Firefox, they're good people, don't get me wrong, but damn it, WHEN SOMEONE IS TYPING THE UNASSAILABLE RULE OF EVENT DRIVEN DESIGN IS NOTHING ELSE SHOULD CHANGE FOCUS WHILE SOMEONE IS TYPING!!!!
    FIX THIS PLEASE.
Oh, I just ran out of capital letters. :) :) :)

  • How do I stop Firefox from auto-focusing on text boxes?

How do I stop Firefox from auto-focusing on text boxes? Sometimes as a page is loading, I scroll down the page...only to have the page jump back to where there is a text box, with a blinking cursor, after the page is finished loading. It is an annoying feature and I want to turn it off.

Some pages use an onload event to set the focus to a text area or search field.
You can try NoScript to see if that blocks it.

  • IOS 7 Mail keeps crashing when I try to open a new message. How do I stop it from crashing?

In the last 24 hours after switching to iOS 7, Mail has crashed on me 3 or 4 times when tapping on the mail icon in the tray. How do I stop this from happening. I have an iPad 2 16GB.

All the suggestions posted were valid ideas, but they didn't help in the end.  I finally had to restore the iPad.  First, I tried clearing up space, and that didn't work, then I deleted all my e-mail acounts and that didn't work.  So, in preparation, I deleted all e-mail accounts, then I turned off photo syncing from iTunes (from my iPhoto account where I had about 10 GB of photos synced), then I backed up this configuration to my iMac via iTunes.  Then I followed procedures in this kb article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137 except I restored from the backup when asked.  I manually re-entered all my e-mail accounts (I have a lot) and Mail was working perfectly now.  Then I re-synced a limited subset of the photos I had synced before, and all is fine.  I think the only problem I really had was a corrupted iOS Mail app, and luckily I was able to solve the issue with a only factory reset and restore from backup!

  • How can I stop Firefox from opening (to "File Not Found") when opening my Opera browser?

This happens EVERY TIME I OPEN THE OPERA BROWSER. How can I stop this from happening? I'm stumped.
[EXTRA INFO - I was unable to enable Firefox to access my previous profile on the new computer (despite putting the old profile in the appropriate Mozilla Firefox folder. So, there are now two profiles in that location.
After reading the answer to another forum member's question, I attempted to resolve the problem using Profile Manager, but I was unable to locate the Profile Manager. The Windows "Search" feature is not enabled on my new computer (nor can it be enabled from the Customize Start Menu options).]

Thank you for your response, Cor-el.
I had Opera set as my default browser since this began happening. I changed my default browser back to Firefox mainly because having Firefox open one or two seconds every time I open Opera was/is such a nuisance.
I believe this problem began because I attempted to manually transfer the files from my old computer to the new one (via the backed up files in my external drive). I was unfamiliar with Windows 7 when I did this. Microsoft changed the file set up from what I had been used to in Windows XP. I used XP for six years before being exposed to Windows 7 (I never had Vista).
I'm almost sure this problem has something to do with where I placed the application data when I was trying to reestablish the program set up on the new computer.

It's not a good idea to allow websites to redirect to another site until you know for sure the original site is trustworthy.
But if you still want to do it (again not a good idea).

I have all my music on my external hard drive when I try to add it to iTunes it is automatically added to my MacBook Pro's hard drive. How do I stop this from happening? I just want the music to stay on the external hard drive. Thanks!

This is true of course, but doesn't cover the situation where some files are in the iTunes Media folder and others are on an external drive. In my case I keep my music in the Media folder and all my films on an external drive (there are too many to have on the internal drive). In iTunes 11, and before, it was easy to add those external files by holding down the alt/opt key while dragging to the sidebar. In iTunes 12 this is no longer possible. There are several workarounds: use TuneSpan to move the file after it's been added; delete the file from the Media folder and empty the trash then use iTunes Get Info which will report the file is missing and allow you to locate it; constantly switch the Add to iTunes toggle on and off as required. All of these require a lot more work than just holding down the alt/opt key while adding.
    It constantly gets harder.
