How do I stop desktop icons appearing from the right?

I'm new to Mac (and loving it!) but when new items (drives, downloads, etc) are added to my desktop that appear on the right hand side (unlike Windows which adds from the left).
Now I like to keep the Twitter app open on the right hand side of the screen so I'm constantly moving it to grab the icons from behind.
Is there a way to tell my Mac to add icons to the left hand side of the screen instead?

A different way round your problem would be to assign Twitter to just one desktop.
Then when you want to access the icons behind it, just four-finger swipe or use the keyboard hotkey to switch to the next desktop (which will show the icons without your Twitter app in front).

How can I make text slide in from the right?

I'm really enjoying learning more with Captivate 6 and the community has been very helpful so far. I can't figure out how to get very simple text effects/transitions such as bringing text from the side of the frame to "slide" into place. This has been a text effect of every program for a decade, is this basic transition available in 6? I'm making a list on a few screens and would very much like the text to simply slide in from the right.
I'm about to just make a transparent png with the text to accomplish this for now considering it's my best bet. Any information would be handy. Thanks!

Apparently if your resolution is too low or the workspace isn't allowing "space" for a full effects window to show up, the whole thing shows up blank and grey. How obnoxious! By closing my properties tab on the right (after many other fixes including making those pngs) it showed up.

This just started occuring 7/8/12. Recently added UPromise turbo saver to my Internet Explorer. Also did a Java update. Can't really remember if they were done before or after problem began. Now, all my desktop icons flip around and will not lock into where I place them. How can I stop this.

Hi there makeyesup!:Well you have 2 choices; go to Control Panel then look for System Recovery then follow what you see on your monitor if you see a calendar, that is System Restore select the latest date that you can remember your icons acting normally then restart anew & wait until the program straightens it out it should be as good as new
2. right click your rodent & look for anything that says Arrainge icons... hit auto or whatever gets them normal
3. restart PC then before the desktop shows up press the F8 key the look for & select "Last good configuration that worked" then restart

How do i get desktop icons out of the hide mode???

my baby got on my computer and started pressing the keyboard and now my icons are hidden. i have only had my computer for 6 days so i have no idea how to get the icons from the hide mode. when i put the cursor down to the bottom of the desktop the icons pop back up but as soon as i move the cursor up they disappear. please tell me how to get them back to how they were thanks!

Somehow your baby has activated the hidden Dock preference. Go to the Apple menu and choose System Preferences... In Sys Prefs choose the Dock pane. There is a check box to automatically hide or show the Dock.

How do I get desktop icons to reflect the orignal associated application and open correctly?

Operating System: Windows 7 (x86)
All desktop and start menu icons are identical. As such, the incorrect application opens when clicked.
How do I restore (system restore hasn't worked) so the correct application is associated with the icon?
HP Customer Support in India has been working on this for weeks and seems unwilling to escalate to someone, preferably US-based, more knowledgable in order to resolve the issue.

this sounds like malware - I would recommend a full antivirus scan.
However if yo uare having no other issues I found the following steps online:
To Reset Icon cache follow the below mentioned steps –
1. Right click on empty area of the desktop and click on Personalize.
2. Click on the Display Properties link.
3. Under Colors, select Medium (16-bit) and click on Apply.
NOTE: If you already have Medium (16-bit) selected, then select Highest (32-bit) instead. Sometimes you will need to do a restart first, then proceed to step
4. Try both ways.
A) Click yes to confirm the new settings.
5. Now, select Highest (32-bit) and click on OK.

To Rebuild icon cache follow the below mentioned steps -
1. Click Start, then control panel and in the search box write Folder options.
2. Now click Folder Options to open and select (dot) Show hidden files and folders.
3. Open a Windows Explorer window.
4. Go to C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Local
5. Right click on IconCache.db and click on Delete.
6. Click on Yes to confirm the deletion.
NOTE: This deletes the file to the Recycle Bin. It is safe to empty the Recycle Bin when finished.
7. Close the window.
8. Empty the Recycle Bin.
9. Restart the computer.
10. When you go back, you will notice the Size of the IconCache.db file is smaller, and the Date Modified is now the current date.
NOTE: If for some reason IconCache.db is not there or the size has not changed much then you may just restart the computer again. You may need to restart a couple of times in some cases.
11. The icon cache will get rebuilt.

How to get my usernames to appear from the drop down box then password automatically put in?

I used to have my settings where it remembered my user name from the drop down box - so I would just type the first letter of my user name and a drop down box would appear and I could just click on my user name for that particular site and my password would automatically fill in...
I changed something the other night and can't remember what the heck I did... now it won't remember ANY user name OR password or like on face book it has my user name and password there automatically when I open up the log in face book page.
So I would like to know if anyone knows what needs to be clicked and unclicked to make it so:
I start typing my user name and the drop down box appears with user names and then my password automatically fills.. I DO NOT want all my user names and passwords already IN the forms when I first open the website... but for me to actually type in a letter and then it fills it... like it used to =(

How can I stop the right hand toolbar continually loading in the new acrobat dc, it is infuriating and am getting extremely annoyed with it as I have to close it every time I load a pdf. I use the arrow to close and it reopens on the next pdf.

Yes very disappointed in how Toolbar functionality generally is so degraded with this DC version. It is as if the product designers have no idea how people use the product. And it degrades its most basic functionality, the ability to read a PDF. I am tempted to switch to one of the many other PDF readers which is one less reason for Creative Cloud.
The default toolbar contains numerous sticky items that I have never needed in the past 15 years, as sticky icons anyway. That little cell phone icon, email, print, and now with Home/Tools/Document alongside with no ability to move them. These fill valuable toolbar space, the result being that side-by-side windows no longer display the toolbar items I actually use. I almost always have PDFs open beside other applications so this means 100% of the time the new design is flawed vs the prior. This is really really basic for any application: personalized toolbars. It was present in WordPerfect in 1993, for example. DC is not to 1993 UI standards.
Get on this immediately, please. Specifically, get rid of the persistent right pane as many of us clearly do not want to use it "all the time" as is forced. And, allow the top toolbar to be fully customizable so those of us who have been customizing toolbars in our applications since 1993 can do so in this allegedly state of the art PDF reader.

Screen wallpaper snapshot without desktop icons appearing in it?

Greetings:
I wish to create a screen snapshot for wallpaper without the desktop icons appearing in the shot. You see, on Tiger I use VirtueDesktop with MenuShade to create a wallpaper that uses fonts and won't display the menubar. However, Leopard rejects MenuShade and doesn't allow VirtueDesktop to start up with each screen having its own fonts. My thought is to take a screenshot of my wallpaper screens in Tiger and have VirtueDesktop view them in Leopard with fonts "intact", though there's nothing I could do to eliminate the menubar as in Tiger. I need to know if there's any program that can take a "clean" screen snapshot in Tiger without the standard desktop hard drive icons appearing in it.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

In Tiger and other OS X versions, you can hide the Hard Drive icon from the
Preferences menu selection under Finder. You can also hide the Dock from
the preference setting for Dock under blue Apple in the menu bar.
Your screen shot options, given keyboard choices, can also include the
main Finder menu in the screen header if you choose Full screen. With
the default screen capture as .png, that can be changed to .jpg if needed.
A second edit in Preview with Crop can remove the menu bar.

Way down under Finder shortcuts we find:
Command key while dragging
Move the dragged item to another volume or location
(the pointer changes while key is held)
Option key while dragging
Copy the dragged item
(the pointer changes while key is held)
Command-Option key combination while dragging
Make an alias of the dragged item
(the pointer changes while key is held)

TrueCrypt tray icon appearing in the middle of the desktop

However, the truecrypt icon appears in the middle of the desktop and has the same functionality like the tray one: I can right click on it etc.

I'm trying to move pictures from my PC to IPad and the directions say to click the ipad name which is on the left but mine appears on the right. Is this important? I'm having trouble getting clear directions on how to move photos to ipad.

When I'm trying to sync photos from PC to Ipad the directions say to Launch I tunes and an icon will appear on the left side. Mine appears on the right side. In general the directions for moving photos to Ipad from computer are vague. Shoud I make a special folder on my PC for the pictures I want to move before I even start? How do I keep from losing pictures I synced the last time?

If you have iTunes 11 then you can enable the left-hand side bar via control-S on a PC. You should then be able to connect and select the iPad on that left-hand sidebar, and then use the Photos tab on the right-hand side to sync your photos to it.
Synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync - so if you want the currently synced photos to remain on the iPad then you will need to include their folders in the next sync. I created a separate folder on my computer with sub-folders underneath it with the photos that I want on the iPad - I can select that folder on the Photos tab in iTunes, and the sub-folders then get their own albums on the iPad (if you have folders underneath those sub-folders then their photos will be included in the sub-folder's album i.e. you can't have albums within albums).

Icons that appear on the right hand side of my desktop wallpaper

Those represent the screenshots you've taken as well as the mounted dmg files. Once you've installed the software, you can remove the mounted images; files on the desktop can be dragged to other locations.
Nothing important to Mac OS X's operation will end up on the desktop unless manually put there.

How do I stop Photoshop elements 13 from crashing?

I just installed elements 13 and it upgraded my catalog just fine. Once I was in I started tagging pictures and then I paused. It crashed.
Now whenever I pause for about 30 seconds it crashes.
I have looked at many articles and have not found anything that worked. Can someone help me?

To answer your question directly [ How do I stop Photoshop elements 13 from crashing? ] , the only way I can think of is to reset your preferences file. The method in PSE13 must be the same as in 10 and 11 and it is as shown in this thread:
