Rather than convert in Elements I sometimes take photos in B&W yet whenever I import RAW files Elements converts them to colour. Can someone advise how to stop this?

A raw file only stores greyscale values of pixels under coloured filters. A raw file is not exactly an image, and its data holds color information.
So, if you set your camera to B&W, no raw data values are changed at all. A tag will be added to the metadata to tell you have set your camera to output B&W jpegs.
If you set your camera to B&W and output a jpeg the camera itself does the raw conversion to B&W.
So, the ACR module in Elements does not convert to colour, it leaves the color that has been captured. From there you can convert to black and while in the ACR dialog, you don't even need to open the image in the editor. Simply move the saturation slider to the left.
With many cameras, you have various modes or presets to get various B&W effects. You can get them by using the raw converter supplied by your camera maker; very often, you can get a similar effect by using the third tab in the ACR dialog (camera profile).

Thanks -- none of the automatic download boxes were checked, but the "automatically download pre-orders" box was checked. I've unchecked everything on the Store tab preferences. Thanks for the tip, hopefully this will fix the problem.

Closing the window does not quit the application. It's not Windows. Apps have multiple document windows. Each window is not its own app. So, if all you were doing was closing the document window, the App was still open.
Kies may have a launchagent set up to start it up when you log in. You'd have to check with Samsung to find out how to disable it. I don't know anything about it, but if you can't solve the dilemma, I can likely lead you to the places to look for the file that causes it to startup.

It seems Apple has decided I want to share everything on my iPhone with every other iDevice on my account. Safari bookmarks, texts, phone calls, contacts, play lists, etc. automatically. I don't! I've rooted through setting to the seventeen different places I need to turn off sharing to stop this yet it still happens. Last week, my wife ended up with my playlists on her Mini. She deleted them and this is where it gets frustrating.

Then I saw my Safari bookmarks on her phone and figured she doesn't want those so I deleted them. It deleted them from all devices. How do I stop this? Do I need to get my wife a separate account? We share an account including the music, apps and movies we buy but we don't want to share everything! I want my own contacts, booksmarks and playlists and she want's her's. What is this sharing madness and how do I stop it?

If firefox automatically updates my computer past 3.6 I'm inundated with Script Freezes..how do I stop new automatic updates?

Everytime I'm automatically updated past 3.6 my computer is inundated with Script Freezes..especially on the email page of gmail.
This has happened many many times. As far as I can determine these Script Freezes (Says: A script is attempting to write on this page.."Continue"..Stop Script etc) are coming from Internet Explorer (I'm not sure of this) and it's tricky to delete any elements of Internet Explorer. But at any rate my computer freezes up until the Script problem is settled..I check the don't ask me again block..but it does no good.
My real question is: Since things work fine in 3.6...how can I avoid any automatic updates?
Also, why isn't there a Timer Window (or a timer bar)for Firefox?...sometimes I have to wait 5 minutes for it to load! If there was a timer at least I'd know that something is happening and I'd be willing to wait. When it does take forever to load..it seems to help if I delete all Prefetch and temporary files.
Is there a safe way of turning off Internet Explorer temporarily?

How can I process a linearly converted raw file while preserving color?

Hi,
I want to convert my raw files in a linear format (to preserve all the dynamic range and detail and prevent unnecessary clipping). My question is "how can I modify the brightness or luminance while preserving the hue and saturation of every color?"
As for applying the gamma curve, I guess the best and only way in Photoshop is to create a Levels adjustment and place a 2.2 in the middle (gray) input box. However, I read in http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/hybrid-conversion.shtml that a 4.75 value should be used... Why? Is the number placed there not correspond to the gamma being applied?

P.S.: getting colorimetrically accurate color from the camera, through all the manipulations in Photoshop is for me crucial. Any pointers as to what to do and what to avoid?

First of all, you should have used the Adobe DNG Converter 8.6, not an old, obsolete version. Always use the very latest version. 8.3 was simply the first ACR version to support your camera model, that's all.
Note that the DNG Converter works only on folders, not on individual raw files. Put all your Sony raw files in a folder and run the Converter on that folder containing the raw files.
I have absolutely no clue as to what on Earth you mean by : "upon reading the memory chip from Photoshop CS5".
You also need to make sure that CS5 is fully updated. You cannot rely on the highly and notoriously unreliable Adobe auto updater to tell whether you have the latest update installed or not.
I still have no idea what platform you are on, Mac or Windows. Please read the following for next time:
