How do I stop firefox from opening every link I click on in a new window instead of loading it in that window?

Whenever I click a link to bring me to a game or maybe a different website, it opens it into a new window which keeps certain things from working.
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== I clicked "open in a new window" on a tab so i could have two windows

Hello,
In safe mode link still open in new tabs?
*[http://mzl.la/MwuO4X Firefox in safe mode]
Go to '''about:config''' and search for:
*'''browser.tabs.loadInBackground''' change its value to '''false'''.
If in safe mode the links still open in new tabs try go to '''about:config''' and search for:
*'''browser.link.open_newwindow''' change its value to '''3'''.

How do I stop firefox from redirecting every page I click on in Google search? No matter what I search for in Google when I click on it Firefox redirects me to some other search, sales, or contest page. I have a security program running, no maleware, adware, or virus on my pc. Thanks for the help in advance.

Sounds like a dose of search redirect malware or a redirect virus.

• How can I stop Firefox from 'talking' every time I click a new item on my laptop screen?

Without my doing anything, all of a sudden my Firefox started talking every time I click something on my laptop screen. Example: I clicked the link that took me to this page. Firefox said "new window... Firefox menu ... Ask a New Question ..." I don't need this, it interferes with all that I do that requires my speaker turned on. How can I stop this?

You can also manage all permissions on the about:permissions page via the location bar.
Use "All Sites" to set the defaults.
You can open about:xxxx pages via the location bar like you open a website.
Firefox uses the about: protocol to access internal Firefox (setting) pages.

• How do I stop firefox from logging every site I visit on about:permissions?

Except when I go Private Window, every time I visit a new webpage the website goes on the about:permissions list. How do I stop it from doing this? Ever since I made a new profile it does this

I'm still running Firefox 21. I recognize the sites in about:permissions but I can't figure out the pattern for what is included and what is excluded... certainly it's not my entire history, but it's not limited to sites with non-default settings or a non-zero cookie count. Hmmm...

• How can I stop Firefox from opening (to "File Not Found") when opening my Opera browser?

Ever since I installed Opera 10.61 on my new computer (Windows 7 Ultimate operating system), whenever I open Opera, Firefox opens one second later with the following error message:
'''File not found '''
Firefox can't find the file at /C:/Users/Nasheed/AppData/Local/Opera/Opera/temporary_downloads/client-en.xml.
* Check the file name for capitalization or other typing errors.
* Check to see if the file was moved, renamed or deleted.
TRY AGAIN.

This happens EVERY TIME I OPEN THE OPERA BROWSER. How can I stop this from happening? I'm stumped.
[EXTRA INFO - I was unable to enable Firefox to access my previous profile on the new computer (despite putting the old profile in the appropriate Mozilla Firefox folder. So, there are now two profiles in that location.
After reading the answer to another forum member's question, I attempted to resolve the problem using Profile Manager, but I was unable to locate the Profile Manager. The Windows "Search" feature is not enabled on my new computer (nor can it be enabled from the Customize Start Menu options).]

Thank you for your response, Cor-el.
I had Opera set as my default browser since this began happening. I changed my default browser back to Firefox mainly because having Firefox open one or two seconds every time I open Opera was/is such a nuisance.
I believe this problem began because I attempted to manually transfer the files from my old computer to the new one (via the backed up files in my external drive). I was unfamiliar with Windows 7 when I did this. Microsoft changed the file set up from what I had been used to in Windows XP. I used XP for six years before being exposed to Windows 7 (I never had Vista).
I'm almost sure this problem has something to do with where I placed the application data when I was trying to reestablish the program set up on the new computer.

• How do I stop Firefox from opening its own homepage tab on top of my homepage?

Firefox keeps opening up its own website in my browser on top of my own home page even though I have reset the home page numerous times. Everytime I open firefox I have to reset my home page which works for a half-day or so and then ... we're back to the Firefox homepage. How do I keep Firefox from hijacking my browser?
P.S. I've tried all the stuff that's recommended -- resetting my homepage, etc ... and I'm just getting tired of having to do this. This is getting so irritating I'm going to stop using Firefox and start using another browser.

I am having a similar problem, I'm using "Show my home page" on start-up but firefox decides to always open to the last page visited regardless. I also generally close Firefox using the red X or with alt+f4. This problem is especially annoying when the last page 'visited' is an annoying pop-up ad that wasn't been caught by the pop-up blocker.

• How do I stop Firefox from opening a new window when I go to a search item?

When I do a search, and click on a topic, Firefox opens a new window on the tool bar at the bottom of my screen. How can I stop this from happening?

I'm guessing you use Google for search. There is a setting in Google search to open each result in a new window. (When you use tabbed browsing, that means each result opens in a new tab.) You can check on whether you have that setting turned on as follows:
On a Google results page, click the button on the right side with the "gear" icon, then click Search Settings from the drop-down list. At the bottom of the page is the setting to open results in a new window.
Is that the culprit?

• How do I stop Firefox from opening in Safe Mode?

Every time I open Firefox it opens in Safemode. I have checked the properties and it doesn't say any thing about Safe mode being on. Also, I have disabled all my addons restarted my computer, tried opening from a different location, and reinstalled Firefox.

Make sure that you do not use a shortcut key that uses only the Shift key or have the Shift key pressed if you click the desktop shortcut.
If you do have a shortcut key that only uses Shift then change that to use Shift + Ctrl or Shift + Alt.

• How do I stop Firefox from opening unwanted sites or (inescapable) dialogs

My Firefox, as soon as I open a web page opens either (1) an overlying dialog typically flashing saying I am the 1000000th person or my computer is slow or buy this or (2) another unwanted site in another tab typically trying to sell something. Cases of type (2) are annoying but at least the tab can be deleted but cases of type (1) prevent me from using Firefox at all because the dialog does not have an exit button so I have to stop Firefox to get rid of it. This problem only happens with Firefox - IE never has these problems. I have scanned for malware using 3 different programs and I have tried deleting Firefox and re-installing it (keeping my profile) but the problem is still there. If I knew what the process was I could at least delete the process.
I love my Firefox - please help!

You can check for recently installed suspicious or unknown extensions.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

• How do I stop Firefox from opening old tabs/windows after a crash?

whenever it crashes and i try to reopen the program, it opens all my old tabs and windows. often these are videos which all start playing at once. or worse, it opens the page that made it crash in the first place and crashes again.
how do i stop this annoying feature?
if there's no way to stop it, can you recommend a simple browser that doesn't try to think for you?

hello, enter '''about:config''' into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named '''browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash'''. double-click it and change its value to '''false'''.
