How do I stop Firefox from opening its own homepage tab on top of my homepage?

Firefox keeps opening up its own website in my browser on top of my own home page even though I have reset the home page numerous times. Everytime I open firefox I have to reset my home page which works for a half-day or so and then ... we're back to the Firefox homepage. How do I keep Firefox from hijacking my browser?
P.S. I've tried all the stuff that's recommended -- resetting my homepage, etc ... and I'm just getting tired of having to do this. This is getting so irritating I'm going to stop using Firefox and start using another browser.

I am having a similar problem, I'm using "Show my home page" on start-up but firefox decides to always open to the last page visited regardless. I also generally close Firefox using the red X or with alt+f4. This problem is especially annoying when the last page 'visited' is an annoying pop-up ad that wasn't been caught by the pop-up blocker.

I had Opera set as my default browser since this began happening. I changed my default browser back to Firefox mainly because having Firefox open one or two seconds every time I open Opera was/is such a nuisance.
I believe this problem began because I attempted to manually transfer the files from my old computer to the new one (via the backed up files in my external drive). I was unfamiliar with Windows 7 when I did this. Microsoft changed the file set up from what I had been used to in Windows XP. I used XP for six years before being exposed to Windows 7 (I never had Vista).
I'm almost sure this problem has something to do with where I placed the application data when I was trying to reestablish the program set up on the new computer.

I'm guessing you use Google for search. There is a setting in Google search to open each result in a new window. (When you use tabbed browsing, that means each result opens in a new tab.) You can check on whether you have that setting turned on as follows:
On a Google results page, click the button on the right side with the "gear" icon, then click Search Settings from the drop-down list. At the bottom of the page is the setting to open results in a new window.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, these settings are exactly the same on my troublesome PC as they are on my laptop which does not have this problem. The PC is Windows 7, and laptop is XP. I have in the past used the PC to access google documents.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the sessionstore.js [2] file and possible sessionstore-##.js [3] files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

My Firefox, as soon as I open a web page opens either (1) an overlying dialog typically flashing saying I am the 1000000th person or my computer is slow or buy this or (2) another unwanted site in another tab typically trying to sell something. Cases of type (2) are annoying but at least the tab can be deleted but cases of type (1) prevent me from using Firefox at all because the dialog does not have an exit button so I have to stop Firefox to get rid of it. Make sure that you do not use a shortcut key that uses only the Shift key or have the Shift key pressed if you click the desktop shortcut.
If you do have a shortcut key that only uses Shift then change that to use Shift + Ctrl or Shift + Alt.

When I receive an Outlook PDF attachment and open it, Firefox starts and a blank page opens. After Firefox has opened and the blank page opens, the PDF viewer I am using opens the PDF.
