How do I stop having to frequently reload proxy pac file on Windows 7?

I have recently had my laptop upgraded to Windows 7. I'm using Firefox 6.02. I use a corporate proxy.pac file. Now I find the frequently when I return to my PC it says it can't find an external web site. It's immediately fixed by reloading the proxy.pac file

We don't technically support downloading videos from Flash.  RealPlayer hooks into Flash without our permission.  The security mechanisms designed to prevent malware from taking over your system prevent RealPlayer from doing its thing in Chrome and Firefox.  I expect that newer versions of IE will also impact RealPlayer's ability to inject themselves between Flash and the browser.
So that said, it's probably something to do with corrupted settings.  You might reset IE to default.
Change or reset Internet Explorer settings - Windows Help
If that doesn't work, you can try blowing away all of the Flash stuff manually.
Before I did that, I'd make sure the filesystem is in a good state.  If files are getting corrupted, there's usually an underlying cause:
Check your hard disk for errors in Windows 7
If something is corrupted, you'll probably hit something that you can't delete.

how do I stop spotlight from returning .r and .h files?

    Hello jtenny,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
I had a similar problem with Safari opening .pdf files. It went away when I went into the following folder: Your Home Folder/Library/Internet Plug-ins, and dragged out any files that looked as if they might make a difference, just one at a time, onto the Desktop. (N.B. I did not Trash them; and if removal made no difference, I replaced the file into the Plug-ins folder.) You will have to restart Safari on each occasion; and on a couple of occasions I found that re-setting Safari (Safari Menu) was necessary to give the application a start-from-scratch with each download attempt.
That's a somewhat makeshift way of approaching it; but provided you don't trash the plugins, and provided you restore those that make no difference, it can't do any harm -- within my experience anyway.
    All good wishes from Ireland
    Martin

  • How do I stop lion from opening all previously opened files on restart?

How do I stop lion from opening all previously opened files on restart?  I want to wipe all open files, since that seems to be the most efficient way to close lots & lots of open files (that build up over the course of normal activities)

One way is to always quit all applications before you shut down.
An easy way to do this (although in my own experience it doesn't seem to always work perfectly) is to simply hit CMD + TAB + Q and hold down all three keys.
When you do that the computer will cycle through all open apps and close them. If there are any open files that haven't been saved, it won't close them. So you should save everything you want to save before you hit CMD + TAB + Q.

  • How do I stop aperture from reprocessing my my raw files on import

how do I stop aperture from reprocessing my my raw files on import

Here's the thing: You didn't shoot in B&W and the Raw is in colour.
Your camera shoots everything in colour because that's what the sensor in the camera is - RGB. For B&W shots what happens is that the camera adds a display tag to the shot - and this is written to the Jpeg you shoot, and so it displays.
But a Raw is a sensor dump from the camera. This is all the data that the camera has, and all of that is in colour, so it shows in colour on Aperture.
Convert to B&W in Aperture or shoot Jpeg.

  • How can I stop tabs from "constantly" "reloading" themselves?

Starting with the Firefox 4 update, tabs appear to keep repeatedly "reloading" themselves somewhat, bogging down my computer quickly when several tabs are open. How can I disable the tabs from "constantly" (or very frequently) "reloading" themselves? I much prefer using the refresh option when I want them reloaded or updated.
    Problem History and Effects:
Before Firefox 4, I could have many tabs (like 30 or 50) open without a problem. With Firefox 4 (and Firefox 5 to, what so far appears to be, a slightly lesser degree), my computer begins slowing down significantly for each tab after about 5 (or when Firefox and "plugin-container.exe" max out my CPU usage), and takes over 10 or 40 seconds to load a page after about 10 or 15 tabs, instead of only 1 second. When I have a large number of tabs open now, at any given moment, most of them say "Connecting..." in the tab title (the same as they say, for at least a moment, when the page/tab is first opened).
    Clarification of "Reloading":
I keep referring to the tabs as repeatedly reloading, but I don't really know what they're doing; they just seem like that's what their doing, since they frequently change their page title (or name of the tab) to "Connecting..." and they seem to put a load on my computer that, as far as I can tell, is like the page is loading anew, or has been refreshed. I haven't actually noticed any changes in the pages when they do this thing that seems like some sort of reloading to me, so it obviously, and thankfully, isn't doing the same thing pressing F5 does. Random things like advertisements, or the friends being featured on someone's Facebook page, would change when pressing F5, but they don't with this problem I'm describing.
    Closing:
In general, I'm very pleased with Firefox, but this feature has been hampering me greatly. I searched for ways to disable it, but didn't find any. It might help if I knew what it's called, and exactly what it's doing.
    Thank you.

  • How do I stop the facebook log in page from opening multiple windows in my browser?

When I boot up my computer and click on Chrome to open a window, multiple Facebook log in pages will open, each in a new tab. This is happening randomly. I will also often have some facebook photo URL trying to open - there's usually nothing on those pages. How can I stop this?

    Hi Lmax,
You are clicking on Chrome, which is not a browser we support. If you are having this issue with Firefox, please change the tab settings in the Preferences/Options menu > General
    Try the Chrome support [https://support.google.com/chrome/?hl=en]

  • How do I stop Quicktime plugin from opening all WAV files?

I have iTunes on my Windows 7 Ultimate computer to support my iPhone.  iTunes installs QuickTime, QuickTime installs the QuickTime browser plugin, and the QuickTime browser plugin DOES NOT RESPECT THE WINDOWS FILE EXTENSION ASSOCIATIONS.  This causes problems because I DO NOT want QuickTime to open WAV and MP3 files as I have other applications for those file types.  So my question is...
How do I tell the QuickTime browser plugin to open file types a, b, and c, but NOT open file types d, e, and f?  I can't find the file type association dialog for the QuickTime plugin.

    Hi turningtest2,
Actually it is linked content - pages that have links to play sound samples rather than having players built into the page, "How To" videos, etc.
Firefox and Chrome seem to have workarounds, and in playing around with Firefox tonight it looks like using Firefox (or Chrome) will solve a lot of the issues here at home, but at the office I'm limited to IE 9, 64 bit when using a Windows 7 box.  Odd as it may seem, I have IE 8, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Opera on my office XP Pro box.  So, I'm having to "reverse migrate" as I move from a Windows XP Pro box to a Windows 7 box at the office, and switch from using Firefox and Chrome (XP Pro) to using IE 9 (Win 7).  Thus, the problems with the QuickTime plugin in 64 bit IE 9 are a real annoyance.
Hmmm, so Quicktime is no longer needed for iTunes.  That's interesting.  I have iTunes at both home and office and maybe uninstalling Quicktime at the office will solve some of the problems ... except for playing ".mov" files...
I'm considering some registry hacks for the office Windows 7 Ultimate box, but I'll have to get the sysadmin to make any registry changes.
Have you tried any of the registry fixes?

  • How do I stop Firefox from auto-reloading pages after I close one window but not others?

This happens when I have two or more separate Firefox windows open. If I close one, and then open a new window, it automatically goes to the sites that were open in the window I closed (as if it were restoring after a crash).
This isn't an issue when I only have one window open, and I have already set the following:
    browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes to 0
How can I get this to stop?

accessibility.blockautorefresh is not about restoring tabs from the previous session, but about preventing website from using the location response header to redirect to another website.
Firefox will always reload web pages.
Firefox always needs to reload tabs when you restore tabs from the previous session.
*Tools > Options > General > Startup: [X] "Don’t load tabs until selected"
If restore_on_demand is set, pinned tabs are restored on startup by default.
When restore_on_demand is set to true, the restore_pinned_tabs_on_demand pref overrides that behavior, and pinned tabs will only be restored when they are focused.
    browser.sessionstore.restore_pinned_tabs_on_demand (pinned tabs)(false)
browser.sessionstore.restore_on_demand (default as set in Options -> Tabs)(true)
browser.sessionstore.restore_hidden_tabs (tabs in other tab groups)(false)

  • How can I stop pages from automatic reloading, I am aware of the option in advanced, but it does not work for pages like Yahoo News and Drudge Report.

I am trying to stop pages from being able to automatically reload. Sites such as Drudge Report and now Yahoo News anre reloading before I have a chance to read them and it confuses me due to a disability besides just being annoying. I have found the option in tools-advanced-accessibility and checked it but they still reload. And I did close Firefox and restart.
    I am using version 3.6.8 Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100722
    Thanks

The Drudge Report site has a script to reload after 3 minutes:
    var timer = setInterval("autoRefresh()", 1000 * 60 * 3);
    function autoRefresh(){self.location.reload(true);}
The Yahoo page probably has something similar.
You can try NoScript to see if you can block that refresh.

  • How do I stop having my 4G LTE device "network optimized"(throttled)?

I have a jetpack that I was issued to use for internet for the next month or so on an unlimited data plan (device is under a govt contract). It is a 4G jetpack. Once I hit 5GB, the device slowed to a crawl - Verizon says they don't throttle, but a 0.2MBPS connection is sure as heck throttling when I can barely load a web page and the speed never increases at night. But for the sake of argument, lets call it their term of "network optimization"
My question is this - is there a feature/provision which is causing this to happen on the account? I've read everywhere that Verizon chose to not network optimize the 4G devices (rightfully so with the 700mhz LTE band after the FCC had to get involved) so clearly something is wrong.
It is not an issue with the device. Save the advice of telling me to reboot it. I had tech support reset the data usage for the account and the speed went back up. Once I hit exactly 5GB, it began crawling again.
Per Verizon's official notice, "Only a small percent of customers will be affected. To be affected, you must be a data customer who is among the top 5% of data users and have a 3G device on an unlimited data plan."
Per their official press release, they stated "We’ve greatly valued the ongoing dialogue over the past several months concerning network optimization and have decided not to move forward with the planned implementation of network optimization for 4G LTE customers on unlimited plans."
This device is not a 3G device and should not be limited in this way. It is being treated as a 3G device on the network. And it is most definitely getting a 4G signal so the device is in fact being throttled. Why is my device being slowed to a crawl and how do I get it to stop?

Are you connecting to 3G/EVDO by chance? I used to see this regularly for a while in my area whenever my phone was connected to 3G and I had over 5GB of data usage in a month. I would be able to tell this by taking my phone, and comparing it against a capped phone sitting near the tower. If you do a comparison with a phone against the hotspot, how drastic is the difference? Do you have an unlimited SIM in the hotspot?
For the past couple of months I have used at least 20GB of data on an unlimited data plan and have not seen any sort of throttling on either the 3G or the LTE (AWS or 700Mhz). I'm currently sitting at 39GB this cycle.

  • How do I stop having iTunes show multiple copies of podcast episode on iPhone?

When I sync my iPhone to my computer with iTunes, iTunes appears to show multiple copies of the podcast episodes on my iPhone.
How can I correct this?  I'm running the latest copies of iTunes and I'm using Mavericks.  The iPhone is a 4S running the latest iOS.
    Thanks,

I know this is a little bit old, but I started having this problem, and this thread was one of the ones that showed up.  I believe I figured out a little bit more, at least in my instance.
I have a 5C, running the latest iOS, and the latest iTunes running on the latest Mavericks.
If you're having what I'm having, you don't see multiple copies browsing the iPhone Podcasts app; you only see the multiples when you go to "on this iPhone" in iTunes, or click the device in the sidebar.   I had a similar issue; I was seeing something like a dozen copies of the same Freakonomics podcast, and often another one was getting added after I synced.
I checked my iPhone though - and I don't think there's actually mulitple copies of the file, despite what iTunes is telling me.
On the iPhone itself, go to "settings", and then "general", and then usage.  This screen will tell you how much storage each app on the phone is using.  If you click "Podcasts" on this list, the next screen will break down the storage used for each podcast.  I took note of the size it was reporting for podcasts that showed duplicate copies in iTunes; and then added up the file size for the number of files that *should* have been on there.   Three episodes should have been something around 80 MB, and that's exactly how much the Podcasts app said it was using.  Had I actually been storing 12 copies of the same episode, it should have been much larger.  (The numbers here are rough guesses, I don't remember what they were exactly at the time, but was exacting when checking, and the math did check out.)
I also checked the sum total size of the podcast audio files on of my laptop, and the Podcast App reported using pretty much exactly the same storage for all audio files as if I added up a single copy of all files that *should* be there for the podcasts I expected to be on the phone.
So while this seems like yet another screw-up behaviour of the Podcast App, at least in my case, it doesn't appear that it's something to worry a whole lot about, as the poodcasts aren't eating up space on your iPhone, at least if you're only seeing the duplicates while browsing the device in iTunes.  Still another item on the list of reasons the default Podcast app needs to be fixed, though.
When I finally listened to the podcast in question, and it became marked for deletion (and at that point shows a "cloud" icon next to it, which I believe means the file itself is actually already gone from the device, and the "deleting" in 24 hours is just the item being removed from the list) the duplicates all disappeared from the iTunes view.

  • When restoring a session with many tabs, how do I stop the tabs from reloading even when I am offline?

In version 4, when restoring a previous session with many tabs (about 80) in offline mode with no internet connection, the tabs will realise there is no connection and will not load. In version 5, the tabs will constantly try to reload no matter how long the internet connection is not active and as soon as I connect to the internet, all the tabs try to load and will cause huge RAM usage and I have to shut down the browser. I want version 5 to be like 3 and 4 and not try reload all the tabs once it has detected no connection.

    Hello there, lalaysa.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great recommendations for unlinking your old phone number from your device:
iOS and OS X: Link your phone number and Apple ID for use with FaceTime and iMessage
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5538
    Unlink a phone number
To remove a phone number from an Apple ID, sign out of FaceTime and Messages on your iPhone:
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
This should remove your phone number from other devices using the same Apple ID with FaceTime and Messages. If the phone number is still available on other devices after you sign out of FaceTime and iMessage on the iPhone, you may need to sign out of iMessage and FaceTime on all your devices, then sign in to FaceTime and Messages again on devices you want to use.
Note: If you no longer have access to the iPhone that is using the number you want to remove, reset your Apple ID password.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.
