How do I stop iCal sending emails?

I've added an exchange account to iCal. However, it recently started sending massive amounts of "Declined" emails for events, some of which are far in the past (years ago.) This happens for multiple events and multiple recipients. I believe the problem is that at one time I "deleted" everything in the iCal notifications area, as it was cluttered with meetings that were no longer relevant.
However, iCal now wants to send emails to everyone on those invites telling them of the Decline. In one minute, my mail account sent over 150 emails, which is very embarassing and inconvienent for other users. I actually had to pull the ethernet cable and disable iCal.
Is there a way to "flush" these out with mass-emailing everyone? I can't find a way to tell what is going to be sent without actually being online. I tried deleting my account in iCal and recreating, but the same behavior happened the next day. I have Outlook running in a VM and have been using that in the interim, and it doesn't seem to have the issue.
I want to go back to using iCal exclusively, but I'm afraid to even open the program at this point. Help!

I just went back into my brother's calendar and he has that event as a recurring event from August 2007 to November 2011 at which point apple moved accounts to me.com. So it shows every week and I think when I moved I selected last event and checked repeat to never and applied to 'all future events' when pop-up gave that option. So is there any way to resolve this? His calendar does not show any sharing.

Please log off and log back in to your machine and the issue should be resolved automatically. In case that does not work, please manually run the msi installer posted here (may require reboot).

I am soooooooooooo confused now. Ok, if you are having problems with Yahoo Mail and Gmail but you do not use Apple's Mail you need to do the following:
1 - Post in Yahoo's Mail forums and/or contact their tech support.
2 - Post in Gmails forums and/or contact their tech support.
Neither of the above are Apple's products.

Since I "upgraded" my Mac OS I can't figure out how to get calendar to send email notifications. Is this feature gone, now?

Apple seems to be losing its way since Jobs died. They continue with their efforts to hide features, not document features, and make their products slower and harder to use. I hate the new iPhone OS. I think Apple must hate older people because they keep switching to fonts that are harder to read (e.g. light red on white with thinner font for the calendar app).

Click Edit>Preferences and select the Email Account Preferences
Click Add Account and select “Add other…” or if you use Gmail or Yahoo mail, select the appropriate choice for it.
Enter your Email Account info and then click “Advanced Settings” and configure your incoming and outgoing mail settings per your email account in Outlook, Thunderbird or mail service.
Click OK, and click Add. The new Email Account will now appear in your listed accounts.
Click the new account and click “Make Default”
The checkmark will indicate the new account is set as the default Email Account for Reader.

to NOT get email notification about updated events from a shared calendar you subscribed to you have to uncheck "events affect availability" in that calendars "info" (mac os X.7 and X.8: iCal —> calendars dropdown —> right click on the subscribed calendar —> choose "get info" from the context-menu —> uncheck "events affect availability")

How to stop "Cannot send email" message?

Whenever I send a message in Mail under Lion, I get a dialog box that says it cannot send the email because I haven't chosen a preferred server for my account. That's not true. For each account, I've checked the box that says "Use Only This Server." The message composition window doesn't have a place to choose an outgoing server, as previous Mail versions did, so it should just take the one that goes with the email address that's the account sending the thing, but it doesn't. My wife and i share calendars. Everytime i create a new event, edit one or delete one my wife gets an email about it. However when she does the same i don't get anything. Neither of us are bothered about receiving the emails so how do i stop sending them? I've looked thru ical preferences but can't find anything obvious.

I got the answer last night while i was in my local Apple store and it's a very easy fix.
Log into icloud
Click calendar
On the left it shows the name of each calendar (home for example) with a little green and white icon that almost looks like a wifi symbol.
One at a time left click once on the one/s that you share with your wife and hey presto there is an option to stop emails.
As you're both getting the emails you'll have to do it on both your icloud account and your wife's

Unfortunately, spam is a disadvantage to having an email address and there isn't much you can do to stop receiving them. However, you can filter these messages using a spam filter. Check with your email provider to see what options they offer to deal with spam. If you are using apple mail, turn on the junk mail filter in the settings (Mail, preferences).

iCal's help files on how to set an email alarm for iCal are clear as mud to me. If I click on alarm in Info of an event, select email as type of alarm, then a popup says must add card with name and own email in Address Book. Fine, click on Open Address Book. Well, then what? I already have more than one card in there with an email address for me. Even if I select one, nothing happens. So how do I make the connection? How can I tell iCal which card to use? I see nothing in Address Book menus or help files.

Been dealing with a similar issue for about 3 years now, so I know your pain. Apple will not solve this problem because they're a stickler for standards, no matter what the rest of the world really needs.
