How do I stop iChat from adding this person?

Ever had someone who's not on your buddy list IM you? And you respond, of course. Well suddenly you look on your buddy list and there's their name. Why? Don't know. Did you add them? Nope. Yet there they are.
I can't seem to find a preference for this anywhere, is this just something I have to deal with? I know it's being done for convenience but... Honestly, it's not convenient.

Hi Doug,
Have you ever used the AIM for Mac or AIM application on a PC ?
The AIM application whichever platform it is on includes a Recent Buddies Group to which all new contact are added by default.
iChat does not normally use this group but it can become activated if there are Buddies in it and they then appear in your Buddy List, and new contacts continue to be added.
The way around this is to use the AIM application to move Buddies out of this group and then delete the group.

• How do I stop msging from adding a "1" to a 10 digit number?

How do I stop messaging from adding a 1 to a 10 digit number?

It is clean, I set up the contacts card, and reentered the 10 digit number after the second fail message.
I entered: xxxxxxxxxx and the display on my contact card is (xxx) xxx-xxxx.
Might the carrier-provider be the issue?
Thank-you.

My Macbook Pro keeps connecting to the wrong wifi. How do I stop it from doing this?

Select the wi-fi tab in the menu bar then select "Open Network Preferences..." Select the "Advanced" button, then select the network that it is interfering with your MBP, then hit the - button and it will "forget" that network. Hope that fixes your problem, good luck.

• Duplicates / Triplicates - Help! How do I stop iTunes from doing this?

This is getting frustrating. Everytime I have iTunes add the music in the iTunes Music folder, I get TRIPLE files.
I've looked in the directory, and there are only single mp3s, but nonetheless, iTunes gives me a Library with triple files.
Needless to say, with thousands of duplicates, this makes any playlists or even just navigating iTunes to be unwieldy.
What's going on, and how can I stop this?

Thanks for replying...
I'm familiar with Show Duplicates. However, when iTunes creates approximately 4,000 duplicates (on top of the 2000 originals I have), it gets to be a bit much. And to delete one-by-one... takes days...
I'm the only one on the computer.

• How do I stop iTunes from adding music on network shares?

I find no way to stop iTunes from looking at network shares and therefore I have 2 copies of all mu music. I have a home network server and have a backup of my ripped music there. But I darn well don't want to have two copies showing up in iTunes and on my iPod.
I find no options in preferences that seem to be related. Everything is off in the Sharing tab. what am I missing?

Soulgazer,
If you are downloading from the iTunes Store, the song will always go to your iTunes library.
If you are downloading from another website, the behavior is controlled by a setting in your browser. For example, if you use Firefox, go to Options > Applications and make sure that the MP3s are set for "Always Ask." By doing this, the songs will be downloaded to your computer, but no action will be taked until you do something manually.

• How do I stop iChat from launching on its own?

This is weird. I have three computers connected over a home network and connected to the net by a DSL modem.
iChat (4.0.2) is installed on all three.
Last night, it was turned off on all three.
This morning I wake to find that iChat has launched on my laptop, is chirping away and showing that window saying AOL has me logged in on two systems at once.
What gives?

Hi,
Check the System Preferences > Accounts > Your Account > Login Items.
This will list the apps that start up when the Mac does.
If you mean that waking the Mac from sleep shows an attempt to receive an IM when Off line then it is possible. In certain circumstances iChat does seem to do this.
In the General Section of iChat> Preferences makes sure it is set to Log out when iChat is Quit. This setting otherwise only partially logs you out and can be responsible for the Double/two place Login message.
Also check whether each computer if using the same AIM screen name has it set to Allow Multiple Logins. (this is one way to stop the message).
If you want to use the Message you get to log another computer out of AIM then type "1" as a response to it (or 2). Typing "1" will log the first computer that was logged in (or not fully logged out) off line. Typing "2" is likely to log the machine you are using Off Line (for iChat/AIM). It can be useful to check which is which.
The same message will appear if there are two apps on the same computer that are logged in (or not fully logged out) with AIM.
If you are getting Off Line messages then you should also get a AIMSysMessage item saying if you want to continue with this and you should have an option to Stop it. (I am not sure there is a way in iChat to restart it)

• How do i stop iChat from showing that i'm idle?

I don't want iChat to show others that i'm "Idle for 10 mins, 17 mins, 1hr10 mins" etc - I just want it to keep showing Available when I'm not actually working on the computer. - I don't particularly like others to see that I'm idle anyway, so how can i make this auto-idle function stop?

Hi,
Also in the General Section of the Preferences tick the box that reads:-
"When iChat is Quit, Set my Status to Off Line."
If this is not set then iChat will leave sort of Partial Login so that you can get Off Line IMs (which will start iChat up if the computer is On)
If you have iChat allowing Off-Line IMs these will still be saved at the Server until you Log in again.
Off Line IMs can be stopped if you reply to the AIMSysMessage Buddy text with a "no"
They can only be reinstated by changing the setting here https://settings.aim.com/
You need to Login first and this can be also done with an @mac.com or @me.com name

Soulgazer,

• I unchecked "Check spelling as you type" but Firefox still underlines words in cut-and-pasted text in some web apps. How can I stop it from doing this?

I'm using an online web mapping application that has input boxes for descriptive text and stuff like that. Sometimes I copy blocks of text from a word processing app into these input boxes because I can format the text in the wp. When I paste the text blocks, Firefox does the wiggly red underline on words it doesn't know. I've already turned off "check spelling as you type" but this doesn't make a difference. I don't want Firefox to check spelling on these text blocks that I copy and paste. Sometimes I need to capture screen images of these text blocks in the mapping application and I want them to look clean. Thanks.

Does "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu has a tick when this happens?
You can consider to disable the spell check underline by setting the ui.SpellCheckerUnderlineStyle pref to 0 (zero) on the about:config page.

I don't know, Maybe Office 2008 doesn't play nice with Lion. Was 2008 working previously with Lion? Did you have these problems with Snow Leopard?
Here's MS's instructions for uninstalling Office 2008.
How to completely remove Office 2008 for Mac
All I can suggest is uninstalling and starting over with a fresh installation.
Alternatively don't use Office at all. Instead use one of the Office substitues that supports Word documents (OpenOffice, LibreOffice, NeoOffice). Also there's Apple's Pages and MS Office 2011.

• My mail application is constantly recovering the same email over and over again. OSX 10.6. How do I stop it from doing this?

I had tried to send a mail earlier today and my email provider had issues, apparently.
While it eventually went through, the message I sent is being eternally recovered and rerecovered, filling the "Recovered Mail" folder with hundreds of copies of it.
It's an IMAP account and was working fine before today. Any idea how to fix this?
Thanks
-J

You need to find and delete (move to the Trash) the offline mail cache (.offline cache.) It's a hidden folder (files and folders with a preceding dot are hidden) inside the Mail folder (inside IMAP) in your user library. Since it's hidden, in order to see it run the following command in Terminal in Applications>Utilities. Hit return/enter once you have pasted in the command.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true ; killall Finder
To reverse this and hide all those hidden files and folders again
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false ; killall Finder
Leave hidden files/folders enabled until you finish emptying the Trash so you know it's gone.

• How do I stop pages from adding sections?

Extraordinarily dissapointed with MAC. Considering returning to Word after many years. I simply want to add individual pages to my project but the new pages turns them into blocked 'sections' and won't allow me to move the pages around! VERY frustrating.

• When syncing iPhone 5s pictures, how can I stop it from backing that album up on my phone?

When I'm syncing my phone to my laptop, how can I stop it from adding a backup album back to my phone?

Foxolini wrote:
I want to delete songs off of my computr because it's taking up unnecessary space, but how can I do this without them being removed from my iPhone when I sync it next?
As given, removing from the library causes the songs to be removed during sync. So the space taken up is neccessary... What would you do if your iPhone where lost, stolen, damaged or needed to be restored?
If you ned more room for storage buy a bigger drive. In fact buy two, one to use as a backup for your library and all your other important files.

• How do I stop OSX from creating ._ thumbnails of network files

Our macs are networked to Windows servers that hold a large amount of image files. These are updated on a continual basis unfortunately the files can't be saved directly to the server but copied blindly into the folder from our macs. The ._ invisible files on the mac appear in windows, not really a big deal (although I would rather they didn't exist a all) The big problem comes when the folders on the server are opened on the mac, it takes forever for the mac to create the little alias or thumbnail files for each image. How do I stop OSX from doing this.

You can stop "some" of those pesky ._invible files with this...
