How do I stop itunes backing up each time I plug in my ipad?

Hope someone out there can help me.  I have upgraded to the new itunes and now everytime I plug my ipad in to sync it also automatically does a backup. I have read other discussions on here regarding this but unfortunately they haven't helped.  I don't have a box to tick to say no to a bcakup and if I go in to the settings and stop it from synching then that is defeating what I want to do.  I want it to sync each time I plug it in not do a backu which takes up to an hour just to add maybe 6 songs to a playlist.  It is very dissapointing what is happening with it.  Does the older version 10.7 have the option not to backup but just to sync??  It doesn't do it to my ipod..

It is not possible to turn off the auto backup and keep the auto sync. The option is both or neither.
iTunes is designed to backup the device prior to a syncs, the processes are not seperate.

• How do I stop iTunes back up from deleting my photos?

So I went to add some music to my iPhone last night, having added some stuff to iTunes.
It was the third time I plugged my iPhone into the PC, having used itunes to sync it, activate it and all the rest. Plugged it in and was greeted with "welcome to your new iphone... set up as new phone or restore from backup" (the backup being from the previous time I'd plugged it in. Neither of these was the 'correct' option, given that it was the same phone on the same account, so I picked the one that had my phone's name - restore from backup, and without any further prompts it deleted all the photos I'd taken since the last time I'd plugged it into iTunes. Having done that, I was able to get into 'sync' and get stuff from iTunes onto my phone and vice versa.
So my questions are these:
If I go on to take more pictures with my phone, how do I get them on to the pc without iTunes deleting them? I appreciate that Sync is one way to do this, but last night I couldn't get to sync without letting iTunes delete all my stuff first. Surely I don't have to set it up as a new phone every time?
What might have prompted iTunes to treat the phone as a new phone? I was logged into my usual account (I only have one, and I'm the only person in the house who has one). I don't really understand why it kind of became hostile to a device that it'd already synced with, and I'd like to understand what I can do to avoid it happening again. I don't use iTunes on any other computer, either.

This is where the backups are stored on the computer.
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Windows Vista: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Go to the appropriate folder and remove it.

• How do I stop iTunes from coming up when I plug in the iPhone

I don't always want iTunes to come up, only for syncing, when I plug in my iPhone or iPad. I most often just download photos using Image Capture and don't need iTunes for that.
I see nothing in iTunes preferences (where it should be you would think) about disabling iTunes from starting up when  you plug in the iPhone.

I'm being careful to rely on help with this as I have in the past 'done what is logical' and wound up destroying files and in a pickle. So I ask this one other related questions then:
If I want to back up to computer then the 'automatically backs up to this computer' really means nothing as the message across from it says it has never been backed up before even though it automatically syncs then?
This is very thin ice. I think I do remember in older versions of iTunes a checkbox like the one you mentioned first, but now it is gone.
Whew. I'm sweating out what to do next.

• When I import new home videos into my iTunes and edit the names it creates duplicate Library's on my Apple Tv. How can I stop this from happening each time I edit a name in iTunes home videos??

I am having an issue with duplicate Libraries showing up in my Home Sharing "Home Videos".  It happens when I import home videos into iTunes and change the names of the files. How do I avoid this from happening and delete the duplicate libraries?

The sort fields should generally be empty unless you've putting in custom values to sort solo artists by their surnames. You can apply common changes to thousands of tracks at once, just don't apply the wrong change because there is no undo.
It is a good idea to backup before undertaking large scale changes. See this backup tip for a suggested approach.

• How do I stop iTunes from autofilling every time I sync my iPod touch?

Everytime i sync my ipod touch 4th gen (32gb ios5) with my mac (10.7) itunes (10.5.1) removes and replaces about 1000 to 2000 songs! this is fine except it takes hours and all i want to do is put a new cd om my ipod, not change a couple of thousand songs.
so my question is how do i get my ipod back to normal manualy manged music mode?
also, restoring isn't an option as my music is stuck on a hdd that i don't have an enclouse for (previous one broke).
Any and All help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Jesse

Hello Jesse,
Autofill is only available when you sync manually. So switching to automatic sync (and then back to manual) should disable it.
Here is a a support page that explains how to set up auto fill, when you plug your iPod in.

• X11 - how do i stop the terminal opening each time I load X11 environment?

as the subject reads

In 10.5, you don't need to (nor should you) launch X11.app manually.
Instead, it is now designed to use the system auto-launching infrastructure to do this for you on demand.
So, for example, if you log in but do nothing to start X11, and then from Terminal.app type
<pre>xeyes &</pre>
the xeyes program should start up, while starting up the X11 server. The idea is to make things as seamless and automated as possible. (I think it is a good idea, and is pretty close to how I have always used X11 in OS X, but for other people who use it differently, I guess it came as a bit of a surprise. Actually, a complete surprise, as there was no accompanying documentation released.)
The thing in /Applications/Utilities/X11.app in 10.5 is merely a wrapper to launch the xterm. I understood your question to be how do you keep it from launching automatically all the time. The above line will stop that from happening, but essentially renders the thing in /Applications/Utilities/X11.app useless. If you want the original behavior back, type in that second defaults line, and it will restore the original behavior, i.e.,
<pre>defaults write org.x.X11_launcher apptorun /usr/X11/bin/xterm</pre>

• How do I stop itunes from also deleting music from my iphone or ipad when I delete it on itunes on my macbook pro?

I noticed that when I delete music or a movie from my macbook pro's itunes, the minute I connect the iphone or ipad, it automaticly removes the song from the devices. I am new to Mac so I am not sure how to prevent this from occuring. I know that when I was using my Windows PC to sync my devices, on the PC's itunes I could set it up to where I would be able to add or delete music to the devised manually without this worry. If anyone can offer me some help, I would appreciate it! Thanks!

• How can I stop iTunes from synching multiple times when I plug in my iPhone

Since the new iTunes 11.1.1 (11)  itunes will not stop synching whenever my IPhone is plugged in.
I have used Disk Repair to reset permissions several times, and there is always a long list of iTunes items, nothng else.
That does not change anything.
Honestly I wish there was a different app to manage IPhone, ITunes from day 1 (ten years ago) has always had bugs or irritating features.

Hi kenfromrapid city!
You may want to require a prompt before syncing your iOS devices in iTunes:

You may also need to reinstall iTunes on your computer in order to resolve this issue:

• How do I stop LR from launching each time media is installed

Anytime I insert a CD/Dvd or Flash card or SD card, LR launches itself.   It takes a lot of key strokes to turn it back off.   I have PS, LR, Elements and other programs, that I might want to use.   I want to turn off LR and have it only open when I want to use it.

99jon gave you the correct answer. If you are using Windows, you can check the same by using another approach:
go to the AutoPlay settings (in Win 7, Start | Control Panel | AutoPlay).
find any item that is marked as "Import photos using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4".
then change them to "Ask me every time" or "Take no action".

• After a recent update, everytime I open Firefox, the Add-ons dialogue box opens on top of the home page. How can I stop it from opening each time?

The question contains all the information I can provide

Ok I found a solution that worked for me, I simply dragged the user.js and the user.js.BAK to the desktop, before that I had done the same with the prefs.js and prefs.js.BAK, but that didn't help, so it's apparently the user file that was an error with.
It was the link from cor-el that helped me on the way http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved It's at the bottom titled User.js file locks certain preferences. This article can also help https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Preferences%20are%20not%20saved
It have still not made a new user.js file, but everything runs fine, hope this can help others to.

Hello! I was on my Mac and then I clicked on iTunes. Then I clicked on Account, and accidentally removed my device from my Mac, how can I get it back? Also when I plug my iPod into the computer, it downloads everything that is on my computer, how can I stop this. please help! please help!!!!!!thank you

Is the iPod still singed into the account isn Settings>iTunes and App Stores and SettingsZ>iCloudl? If it is then I would not be concerned.
Also see:
iTunes Store: Associating a device or computer to your Apple ID

For the other "problem", go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and check the box that says Prevent iPod....automatically syncing.

• How do I stop itunes from transferring apps from my ipad or iphone to my pc ?

How do I stop iTunes from transferring apps from my iPad or iPhone to my PC ? I have App sync turn off and I have add files to library turned off. Yet every time
I sync iTunes transfers all my apps to my PC. I have 20-30 gig of apps on each. A lot of them are 1gig each and it takes for ever to sync , plus I don't want 100 gig of apps just sitting on my hard drive for no reason. Any app I ever want is always available in the cloud so what's the point of having them on my PC in the 1st place?

I'm pretty sure that the space is used up on your computer's hardrive.
Anyway my solution to this nuisance of apps/itunes transfer was to allow itunes to download the apps from my phone...
...First of all I had tried to uncheck a few boxes in itunes a) automatically sync when device is connected (in the summary section) b) prevent devices from syncing (edit>preferences>devices) and c) Automatically sync new apps (apps section of device)
HOWEVER, when I would click sync in any section, apps tried to transfer to itunes from my iphone.
So after all my apps went on my computer (approx. 9 GB), I checked the boxes back, disconnected my device and deleted all the apps from itunes and my computer simultaneously (by clicking del/move to recycle bin).
Now when I connect my iphone it does it's backup/sync thing automatically ...but no apps try to transfer
Note: apps from your library cannot be set to sync with your device
I can now also click sync in any section and no apps transfer.
(This problem started when I downloaded an app from itunes rather than my device and I later transfered the app to my device. My apps section in itunes is completely empty now and no apps appear in windows explorer either)
the only thing I am unsure of now is; what's going to happen if I purchase an app from itunes on my pc again ...I'm guessing I'll have to repeat the process (might want to avoid that)

• How do I stop iTunes from auto-launching when connecting iPod.

I have found one method of doing this set out below.
You may want to stop iTunes from auto-launching whenever you plug in your iPod. To do this, open iTunes, and select the iPod in the left-hand Source window. Four buttons will then appear in the lower right-hand corner of the iTunes window. Click the left-most button with the iPod icon on it. This will bring up the iPod Preferences dialog. Uncheck the option labeled "Open iTunes when attached." You probably also want to prevent iTunes from trying to automatically synchronize your iPod when you connect by selecting the "Manually manage songs and playlists" option in the same Preferences dialog.
I am unable to find the iPod icon in the left hand Source window, maybe if I connect my iPod an icon will appear, but I don't want to do this in case stuff is transferred between the iPod and Comp or vice versa.
Sorry to be so long winded, but it was difficult to explain without being so.
If any one knows of another way to do what I am trying to do
Perhaps they would let me know.
ASP   Windows XP Pro

okay. in a 7.0.x, we no longer get the "ipod options" icon when the ipod is plugged in and selected in the sourcelist (the area to the left of the iTunes screen). instead, the ipod options and preferences display for us in the main library screen.
"Open iTunes when this ipod is connected" is kept down at the bottom of the "Summary" tab. (scroll down to the bottom of that tab to see everything under the "Options" heading.)
"manually manage music" (or "manually manage music and videos" if you've got a video-capable ipod) is also kept down at the bottom of the "Summary" tab in the Options area.
for a technique for connecting the ipod without automatically syncing (if you have an automatic syncing option set on the ipod already), and then changing the options to "manually manage music", see:
How to keep iTunes from automatically updating your iPod
unfortunately, that document is also written for itunes 6.0.x or earlier. so in your case the instructions under the "Now that you're logged in as the Guest user, it's time to get back to iTunes and your iPod:" section at steps 4, 5 and 6 should read:
4. Scroll down to the bottom of the Summary Tab
5. Check the "Manually manage music" checkbox.
6. Click "Apply".

• How do I stop iTunes from starting up in the other active Windows sessions?

I have multiple (3) user accounts on a windows (Vista) computer. When I start iTunes from one account iTunes wants to also start up on each of the active windows accounts and continues to attempt to start iTunes after some time period (90 seconds?).
I get a error screen on the attempts for the User that should not be starting iTunes that reads:
You cannot open the application "iTunes" because another user has it open.
Ask the other user to quit the application, then try again.
I want iTunes to run within only one account. How do I stop iTunes from starting up in the other active accounts?

Connect iPhone - iTunes will launch
select iPhone in iTunes' left column
in iTunes' main window untick "Automatically sync ..."
