How do I stop itunes from creating a 'Music' folder inside my music folder?

I'm trying to set up my library on a new computer and I'm running into a very BIG problem.
Previously, I had let iTunes manage the directory structure, which in my opine does quite well: Artist / Album / Song. Trying to import the library into the new computer is causing a new folder to appear at the Artist level, called 'Music', and the artist directories are moved under it as they get imported.
This makes no sense to me. The versions of iTunes are the same: 9.0.2 - and this was NOT done whenever I imported a CD. The settings are the same - I like the settings a certain way and I made sure of that. The 'let itunes mange...' is checked on the new computer just like it was on the old. But the new computer is refusing to let the music stay in the same structure as the old one did.
The only real difference I can think of is that I'm trying to import the directory containing the structure, rather than importing them disc by disc, and that I'm trying to import the library from the library directory itself (ie: importing c:\itunes when the library is also sourced at c:\itunes). But I've done this before with previous versions of itunes without this problem occurring. How come the old versions knew how to handle this as expected, but the new one doesn't?
And most importantly - How do I stop it from happening now?

Reading through that article - there's two important pieces of information.
1 - It says that you have to select "Upgrade to iTunes Media organization" in order to enable this so-called feature, which is still unchecked on my machine (ie: I didn't do it).
2 - It says that it's enabled by default in iTunes 9.
Kinda conflicting there, it still says it ISN'T enabled on my PC but I apparently have to deal with it anyway. Why bother pretending to give me a choice at all if it's just going to be enabled by default?
I'm gonna go wipe itunes now and start at version 8 - maybe the upgrade path will keep my directories the way I like them instead of itunes lying to me about the new media layout.

  • I have transfered my library my library to a NAS drive. How do I stop Itunes from creating the default folder on the local drive?

I've transferred my Itunes Media Library to a NAS drive, and pointed Itunes (using the advanced preferences tab) to the relevant folder on the NAS drive. I have done this to free up disk space on a computer I primarily use for work but which I use both at home and at work. The NAS drive is at home. (To clarify, I am not expecting Itunes to function at work, only at home when access to the NAS drive is available).
Under certain circumstances Itunes will start-up at work and when it does it will create the folder structure for the Itunes Media Library in the default location (on the local drive) instead of looking for the location I have specified (the NAS drive) which it should not be able to find when I am at work and telling me that it can't find it (which would be fine).
How do I stop Itunes from recreating the default folder structure and defaulting the file path to the standard media library location on my local drive? Every time this happens I have to re-point Itunes to the NAS drive location, which often requires me to reconsolicate libraries which is tedious and time consuming. It seems that in the process of one of these consolidations I have lost some of the media files. They are still in the library (ie. visible in the Itunes window) but Itunes can't find the media associated with that file - identifying them with an excamation mark "!".
Any help with this would be appreciated, as I have read several forums and threads, and despite trying several different approaches I have been unable to address the problem, which appears to be exacerbated by the laptop being remote from the NAS drive.

Can I put the ".itl" and other database files on the NAS, and if so where would I put them? I'm thinking that if the library file is only available at home then the ITunes library won't get corrupted at work when it can't find the media, in the event that I accidentally start up itunes eg. while opening an attachment or disc that can be read by Itunes.
iTunes will start up and you will have an empty library.
Can I put the ".itl" and other database files on the NAS, and if so where would I put them?
    Yes.
    Quit iTunes.
Copy the /Music/iTunes/ folder on the NAS.
Move the /iTunes media/ folder currently on the NAS into  the /iTunes/ folder you just copied to the NAS.
Hold Option, launch iTunes, select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the NAS.
You can delete /Music/iTunes/ folder on the internal drive.
If you launch iTunes while NOT comnnected to the NAS, iTunes will recreate the /Music/iTunes/ folder and you will have an empty library.
WHen you are again connected to the NAS, just do step 4 above.
Do you know what the advantages and disadvantages are of having the database files like the ".itl" files stored locally versus on the NAS?
Keeping everyhing together inside the iTunes folder makes it "cleaner" and simpler to manage everything.

  • How do I stop iTunes from creating duplicate entries and sub-folders?????

I am SOOO SICK AND TIRED of iTunes deciding to create sub-folders all the time. I just want to have one big folder and throw all my music into it. I have now spent several weeks trying to re-create my music library after my hard drive crashed, and iTunes keeps messing everything up.
If I let iTunes do what it wants, I end up with two or three copies of each song. If I try to consolidate my files by deleting extra copies of songs, suddenly iTunes can't "find" anything.
When I go looking for the "missing" songs, iTunes creates endless fractal layers of folders within folders.
    I AM SICK OF THIS!
I AM ABOUT TO ABANDON ITUNES AND GO BACK TO WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER.

    CodeVII wrote:
Why when you have a large number of files it is better to have them in sub-folders???
Unchecking both those options still doesn't stop Itunes from putting files in Artist and Album folders..
The problem I see with putting music files in folders is if you want to move them or change the file properties with just the Operating System they take longer to access. So quicktime seems like something I'd try but....
I'd like to have the option to have my files in one Folder/Directory.
iTunes really wants you to use iTunes to manage the iTunes library. If you use the operating system or third party tools to modify tags, iTunes won't detect the change until it has some reason to access the tag, e.g. during playback. In contrast WMP will sniff out changes in your tags and update itself automatically.
Once you've got your media in iTunes why do you need to access it again at the folder level? As it happens I'm quite obsesive over the structure of my files both logical and physical (see grouping & scripts) but I strongly recommend others to avoid the temptation to waste too much time over the physical layout and leave iTunes to get on with it...
Many other programs have offered choices for folder structure, invalid character replacement etc. over many years without iTunes joining in. I suspect that the developers of iTunes have long since decided that extra choice in this area isn't necessary since "it just works", though by all means drop a line to iTunes Feedback.

  • How do I stop itunes from corrupting it's library on almost a daily basis?

How do I stop itunes from corrupting it's library on almost a daily basis?  It's actually becoming infurating to use, and what's happening is I am losing my downloads since the last automated itunes backup (having to rename & replace the current corrupted library with the last backup which is usually a day or two old).  What can cause this?  Is there ANY alternative to using itunes for Apps (which is the sole use I have for it)?   If not, APPLE PLEASE REMOVE THE NEED FOR THE DATABASE SO IT DOESN'T HAVE THE ABILITY TO CORRUPT ITSELF...  :'(

Things you see in iTunes are stored in various sub folders in your main iTunes folder as in:
Image of folder structure and explanation of different iTunes versions (turingtest2 post) - https://discussions.apple.com/message/13025536 and https://discussions.apple.com/message/17457605
Start iTunes and immediately hold down the option key.  Create a new library somewhere.  Go to your old iTunes folder and drag items to the window for the new library.  Maybe only grab a folder or part of one at a time.  It will copy these items to the new library (so you need lots of extra room on your computer).

  • How do I stop iTunes from automatically sorting by Album Artist?  Driving me crazy.

How do I stop iTunes from automatically sorting by Album Artist?  Driving me crazy.
I listen to primarily classical music
All of my music was very deliberatley titled by composers "Last Name, First Name" as the artist.
iTunes is changing it to the Album Artist.  I have to go in and delete that information - AND THEN IT LATER REVERTS IT BACK!!!
Hours have been wasted and I am feeling so ticked.
    Any help?

    Purchased or ripped media?
If these are ripped mp3s then another possibility is multiple embedded tags. iTunes works best with a single ID3v2.3 tag. Some software creates both an ID3v1.0 and IDv2.x tag. With multiple tags it is not certain which iTunes reads or which it updates, and any device may choose differently. Once songs have the correct info. in iTunes you can use Convert ID3 Tags... None several times, then Convert ID3 Tags... v2.3. The process removes any embedded art but otherwise preserves the data that iTunes knows. You could use my script CreateFolderArt before and after to save and then restore the artwork.
In the long run you may be better off populating Album Artist properly with a copy of whatever is currently in Artist. My script CopyArtistToAlbumArtist can do this effectively.

  • How do I stop iTunes from automatically changing artist, album.....?

How do I stop iTunes from automatically changing artist, album, and genre names?
I keep my itunes library folder very organized. You wont find the same artist spelled two different ways in it. But itunes automatically changes the artists, album names, and genres for whatever reason, making it so I have to edit my library all over again.

    No, don't check it!
That is the only setting that would let itunes change file names. Read right underneath it - itunes will create files & folders based on artist & album name.
Something else must be changing your files, then - not iTunes.
Every PC comes with WIndows Media Player. Go into that and uncheck the options to retreive internet info for albums. It's in 2 places, on the Library tab and the Privacy tab.

  • How do I stop iTunes from automatically importing the songs I download?

I usually end up deleting a bunch of songs, but iTunes is automatically importing/adding the songs I download which then creates a lot of missing file links. How do I stop iTunes from doing that, I just want to be able to add them manually by folders.

    I'm having a similar problem.
When I download songs via my MobileMe "iDisk" webpage, it will automatically end up in iTunes and starts playing. I set up my iDisk settings to place my downloads on my desktop, which it does, just fine.
Nonetheless iTunes ALWAYS wanting to be part of it, is really annoying.
I just DON'T want iTunes to start up, just because a download finished. I add songs manually myself when I want it.
    Any advise ?? Thanks

I have all my music on my external hard drive when I try to add it to iTunes it is automatically added to my MacBook Pro's hard drive. How do I stop this from happening? I just want the music to stay on the external hard drive. Thanks!

This is true of course, but doesn't cover the situation where some files are in the iTunes Media folder and others are on an external drive. In my case I keep my music in the Media folder and all my films on an external drive (there are too many to have on the internal drive). In iTunes 11, and before, it was easy to add those external files by holding down the alt/opt key while dragging to the sidebar. In iTunes 12 this is no longer possible. There are several workarounds: use TuneSpan to move the file after it's been added; delete the file from the Media folder and empty the trash then use iTunes Get Info which will report the file is missing and allow you to locate it; constantly switch the Add to iTunes toggle on and off as required. All of these require a lot more work than just holding down the alt/opt key while adding.
    It constantly gets harder.

If the music is on the same computer, import the songs to your iTunes library by dragging them into iTunes or choosing File > Add to Library (Mac) or File > Add File to Library or Add Folder to Library (Windows).  If the music is on different computers you can set up Home Sharing to copy the music from one library to the other (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3819 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4620).

How do I stop Itunes from auto starting?

10 minutes later: iTunes will not startup if the iPod is not plugged in upon boot up. If the system sees the iPod plugged in upon boot, then system will start. This seems to be done with the help of iTuneshelper.exe and /or iPodService.exe. if you don’t want iTunes to start automatically when the system boots do not have your iPod plugged in. if you want to be able to keep the iPod plugged in then you are going to have to msconfig at the start run command and stop the iTuneshelper.exe in the startup service area. This should stop the iTunes from starting up when the unit is plugged in and you are booting up. Sorry for the long sentences but thats a possiable fix, enjoy.

  • How can i stop iTunes from Auto rating my songs??

How can i stop iTunes from auto rating my songs in my library?? I have my library very organized and 90% of the time when i listen to music i play "My Top Rated" Playlist on shuffle. The only time i give stars ratings to my songs is for my favourite songs which i give 5 star and every other song is just left with no stars. For some reason iTunes is giving songs i have never played or i dont like 5 Stars and rewining my playlists. I have tried erasing all the stars from my entire library and since doing this a week ago, again (for the 4th time in a year) having a library with not 1 song with any star ratings, all of a sudden i now have 329 random songs with 5 stars again??????
This is really getting to me as i love my music and love iTunes and everything apple but seriously there has to be away to stop this so i can have my old playlists back!
Thanks hope some one can help

One reason itunes will start "at regular intervals" will be if you have an iphone that has sync via wifi enabled. I had the problem following an upgrade to iOS 5.

How can I STOP iTunes from automatically trying to add podcasts to my iPod when I plug it in and sync it, so I can manage the files? I have already unchecked "Sync Podcasts" and "Automatically include,"yet EVERY time I sync it,it still transfers podcasts as the last step, and at other times randomly, when trying to just add some MP3's to a playlist, for example.  I can't seem to find any other option to uncheck, and can't find an answer from my so-far internet searching.

erict, you blew me away with that suggestion! It was something so simple I couldnt believe I hadnt thought of it! But in the end it didn't work, which I was really surprised about. On Windows anytime anything was moved itunes was hoplessly lost, but on this mac it still kept up with everything. I tried renaming folders, moving folders, and even renaming moved folders but it still kept trying to import.
I even went as far as deleting EVERYTHING i had moved to the Mac, which didnt really work. It still kept trying to import what wasnt there which made it continue to freeze up. However, after doing this it, the freezing was not nearly as bad. It gave me enough of a break to cancel it through the itunes dialog box at the top of the app. So in the end, thats all I really needed to do, only before I had deleted everything the freezing would not allow me to do it.
So now Im reimporting everything again, only slowly, and only a few Artists at a time.
