How do I stop Mail from launching at Random

I've seen this question asked, but I've yet to find an answer. I do not use Mail, but it launches at random several times a day. It will not quit normally, so I have to do a force quit. I've checked iCloud in preferences and mail is not selected. I'd love to find an answer to this and I'm many others are experiecing the same problem. Thanks. Running 10.8.4

As far as i know you can not Delete the Mail.App!
Try this Go back to system prefencses and go to mail, contacts, and calanders!
On the left hand side you should see a box what list the installed accounts!
View each and every one of them and make sure mail is unchecked for all of them!
If you have no accounts installed iclould should be the only one on that list! Click it!
Now  make sure mail is unchecked that way!

  • How to STOP Mail from launching at startup

I hate even posting this question because it seems like I'm missing something easy. I want to stop mail from launching at start-up because I now have entourage.
I can find how to TURN OFF mail and TURN ON entourage at start up.
    Mail: 2.1.3
    Entourage: 12.2.3

You're overlooking the obvious, as you suspected.
Go to System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items and remove Mail from that list. If you want Entourage to startup, add that to the list.
However, there's no good reason to use Entourage over Mail, especially because it stores all your mail in a single file, so if that file ever becomes corrupted (it will, at the worst possible time) all your mail is gone; it cannot be recovered.
Secondly, you shouldn't startup applications at launch, since that will slow down your startup time and can easily cause other problems before you even get the chance to do anything with the computer. If you need to use a program, launch it after the Finder has loaded completely.

  • After upgrading to Safari 6.0 (running 10.7.4), when launching Safari, Mail also launches.  How do I disable Mail from launching simultaneously?

Whenever I try to open only Safari, Mail automatically launches.  I cannot seem to figure out how to stop it from doing this.  I am certain that this is not about programs launching at login.  It only began after I did the Safari 6.0 update.  I cannot find anything in preferences on how to stop Mail from launching.

Read this whole message before doing anything.
Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now.
Quit Safari if it’s running. Then select  ▹ Force Quit... from the menu bar. A small window will open with a list of running applications. Safari may appear in that list, even though you quit it. If so, select it and press return. Close the window.
    Step 1
In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-A to open the Applications folder. Select the Safari icon in that folder and press the key combination command-I to open the Info window. There’s a checkbox in the Info window labeled Open in 32-bit mode. Uncheck it, if checked. Close the Info window and the Applications folder.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. Delete the following items from the Library folder (some may not exist):
    Caches/com.apple.Safari
    Caches/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess
    Caches/Metadata/Safari
    Preferences/com.apple.WebKit.PluginHost.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess.plist
    Saved Application State/com.apple.Safari.savedState
Leave the Library folder open. Try Safari again. If it works now, stop here. Close the Library folder.
    Step 2
If you still have problems, quit Safari again.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    rm -fr $TMPDIR../C/com.apple.Safari
Quit Terminal. Launch Safari and test.
    Step 3
If Safari still doesn’t work right, quit, go back to the Finder and move the following items from the open Library folder to the Desktop (some may not exist):
    Cookies/Cookies.binarycookies
    Preferences/com.apple.Safari.LSSharedFileList.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.WebFoundation.plist
    PubSub/Database
    Safari
(Note: you are not moving the Safari application. You’re moving a folder named “Safari.”)
Try again. This time Safari should perform normally, but your settings and bookmarks will be lost.
If the issue is still not resolved, quit Safari again and put all the items you moved to the Desktop back where they were, overwriting the newer ones that will have been created in their place. You don’t need to replace the files you deleted in step 1. Stop here and post again.
If Safari is now working normally (apart from the lost settings), look inside the “Safari” folder on the Desktop for a file named “Bookmarks.plist”. Select File ▹ Import Bookmarks from the Safari menu bar. Import from that file. Recreate the rest of your Safari settings. You can then delete the items you moved to the Desktop.
Note: This step will remove your Safari Extensions, if any, and their settings. If you choose to restore them, do so one at a time, testing after each step to make sure you haven’t restored the problem.
If you don’t like the results of step 3, you can undo it completely by quitting Safari and restoring the items you moved or deleted in that step from your backup, overwriting any that were created in their place.

  • How do I stop mail from looping the same emails into inbox?

How do I stop mail from looping the same emails into the inbox over and over again? It does the same thing with deleted messages that keep showing up again and again in multiples even after deleting them. I have made sure my server settings in all email accounts are set to delete immediately once I delete them on my MacBook Pro/IPhone. This issue has severely compromised the efficiency of Mail on my MacBook. Thanks for any help you're able to give me.

I have tried that but it does not fix the problem.
The "card" group is not a previous recipient.
Although not available for editing in Contacts, it is a valid group showing up in the "To" field of Messages, Mail, or any app using the AddressBook.
Its associated file is automatically created in:
    ~/Library/ApplicationSupport/AddressBook/Sources/<hexaFolder>/MetaData/<hexa>ABG roup.abcdg
This is why it also shows up in the Spotlight results...
If I manually remove this file, it gets recreated...
If I turn off the syncing through iCloud, the entry gets deleted. If I turn it up, it comes back!

  • How do I stop iphoto from launching itself every time I use my laptop?

How do I stop Iphoto from launching itself every time I use my laptop?

    Some possibilities:
Right click on the iPhoto icon in the Dock. Is Open at Log In Selected?
Check your System Preferences -> Accounts -> Log In Items
Is there a camera or anything that your Mac might think is a camera (flash drive, USB Hard Disk formatted to a FAT format, phone) attached to your Mac. If so, disconnect it. If you don't want to disconnect it, set iPhoto to "Do Nothing" when a camera is attached. You do this in the iPhoto Preferences.

When an event is about to begin, the mail app opens and I'd like to turn that off since I don't use the mail app.

    Hi
This may have something to do with the "Automatically retrieve invitations from Mail" option being enabled? Click on the iCal Menu > Preferences > Advanced. It may also be the Alarms setting? This is for 10.6 iCal so it may be in a different place for 10.5?

You are really confused. There are several things I'd recommend, first is becoming more familiar with your computer by visiting (and bookmarking)
    Mac 101
    Find Out How Video tutorials
    Switch 101
Next, you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support when you buy any new Mac. You will find the phone number in your manual or you can also click the AppleCare Contact Info if you cannot find it. However I would STRONGLY recommend carefully reading your manual. The AppleCare people will be able to help you sort out what you have done. You can also visit and Apple Store and speak to a Genius for free, just make an appointment.

  • How can I STOP mail from syncing with .mac????

I don't have a .mac account, I will never have a .mac account, I have in mail prefs BOTH boxes under "synchronize with other computers using .mac" unchecked, and yet Mac Mail tries to tie up my entire system "synchronizing with .mac" all the time, especially when traffic is heavy (downloading or uploading). I've got activity viewer on and the stop sign is ghosted, there appears to be no way to stop Mail from doing this useless tie up time wasting process that manages to completely freeze up mail until it's completed and sometimes slow up other programs as well. I only have POP accounts, no IMAP accounts that have to be synced.
This didn't start happening until I upgraded to 10.4.11. Prior to that Mail blazed through everything, and it NEVER tried to sync with .mac.
Is there any way to turn this useless "feature" (for me) OFF?
    Thanks!

I was on Tiger earlier, but just got home to a Leopard machine... and a power outage during the day seems to have blown my Tiger's Monitor, but look for...
    /Users/bd/Library/Application Support/SyncServices/Local/clientdata/com.apple.DotMacSync
I'd try dragging the whole folder, if it exists...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/SyncServices
to the Desktop & reboot, we can always move it back if need be.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.DotMacSync.<ethernet MAC address>.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DotMacSync.plist
are both other good choices to drag to the desktop.
We might even have to go in and Copy this to the Desktop then Trash the originl...
    /System/Library/CoreServices/dotmacsyncclient

  • How do I stop iPhoto from launching every time I sync my iPhone?

I have looked for something in Preferences on both my iPhone's PHOTOS tab as well as in iPhoto but cannot find where to tell whatever I need to tell to stop iPhoto from launching automatically every time I hook up my iPhone to my Mac to sync. This is really annoying and I'd so much rather just handle anything like that via the iTunes interface vs. another window/program that has to operate to deal with stuff on the iPhone. It's INelegant at best and just simply a pain in the arse at worst.

You mean I can use this Image Capture thing for moving stuff from scanners as well?
You bet. Some don't prefer using iPhoto to store all imported digital camera photos or any such application (not sure why but to each his/her own) so Image Capture can be used instead which is a simple import/transfer application. Using Image Capture, you can download some or all, remove photos from the camera after the download process, select a default download location or create a new folder in the location of choice and use a chosen automatic task such as crop to a 4' x 6' which occurs after the download process is complete.
A nice simple little application which has some juice for those who don't like using iPhoto or similar type application.
I'm in the habit of rooting around the applications folder and utilities folder with a new Mac purchase so I was aware of Image Capture but I've always preferred using iPhoto for my digital camera import process.

  • How can I stop Mail from opening

Whenever I use ANY web browser (Safari or Firefox) and click on an e-mail (mailto) link, Apple Mail opens. It is driving me crazy. I am about to throw my computer away and go back to using good old paper and a pencil to do everything.
    I have tried the following:
    Firefox:
Preferences/Applications/mailto and changed the drop-down to gmail (that is the browser my wife uses and the mail she uses)
    THIS WORKED FOR FIREFOX
    Safari:
The preferences panel has nothing about how to handle mail requests.
So I went into Mail (which I frikkin hate by the way, worse than anything you could ever imagine)
Mail's preferences don't have an option for ANYTHING to handle mail... besides Mail (which is a horrible program).
When I click select and choose Firefox, Safari, anything, it reverts back to mail.
I want mail to STOP opening when I click an e-mail address. I am fine with the solution for Firefox. How do I configure Safari to do the same?
    THANKS!!!!!

Hi Dave!  This may help if you should want to save your emails to your computer which AM can do.
    --Open Mail
    --From Application Toolbar choose MAIL
--Choose ACCOUNTS from Mail  tool bar
    --Choose "Account Information"
--In the bottom right hand box -- Choose the "drop down box" (blue arrows) and Choose the mail box you want to send mail from
--Check "Use only this server".  (Safari has a drop down on their tool bar that allows you to choose which box you want to send from.)
Go to Safari or a Web Page and send an email message.  See if this works.
Of course, I'm assuming you have filled in the Account information for all your mailboxes.  If not, that's a whole different  procedure but well worth the effort, all your mailboxes are at your fingertips and you can save all your mail to your computer, back it up and never loose a word.  :-)
Another caveat:  I am using OS X 10.6.8 and the later versions of OS X may have dropped or modified Mail.  Perhaps someone using one of the newer versions can add their knowledge here.
AM has many useful perks, it just takes time to find them but they really are worth the effort.
