How do I  stop my mac from automatically decompressing files?

I'm working on a website and I have to upload a file to the web server but I can't because my computer automatically decompresses it. What should I do?

Click Restart, and uncheck  "Reopen windows when logging back in".
You can also try quitting those apps before you restart. Make sure you quit them completely (cmd-Q) and not just closing the window.

  • How do I stop my Mac from automatically opening multiple programs, ie: iMessage and Mail at startup?

I have tried unchecking the option "Open at startup" found when you higlight the program while it is in the dock.  I have also gone into Preferences/Users and Groups and none of the programs that I do not want to open at startup are in the list.
While I am familiar with other Apple products this is my first Mac, and this is just one of the many things that is taking time to figure out.

Click Restart, and uncheck  "Reopen windows when logging back in".

  • HT2474 How do I stop the trash from automatically deleting files?

iMac Computer crashed couple of weeks ago. Got it back with a new hard drive. I had Lion but this problem is happening with it AND when I upgraded to Mountain Lion.
The minute you drop something into the trash it cleans out and empties the trash. I can't find where to turn that off so that files will stay there for at least a week or two.
    Any ideas?

The procedure below will reset the permissions of a home folder in OS X 10.7.4 or later. If you're running an earlier version of 10.7, update to the latest version first. This procedure should not be used in OS X versions older than 10.7.4.
Back up all data before you begin.
    Step 1
Click the Finder icon in the Dock. A Finder window will open.
    Step 2
Press the following key combinations, in the order given:
    Command-3
    Shift-command-H
    Command-I
The Info window of your home folder will open.
    Step 3
Click the lock icon in the lower right corner and authenticate with the name and login password of an administrator on the system. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
    Step 4
In the Sharing & Permissions section of the window, verify that you have "Read & Write" privileges. If not, use the "+" and "-" buttons in the lower left corner to make the necessary changes.
    Step 5
By default, the groups "staff" and "everyone" have "Read Only" privileges. With those settings, the files at the top level of your home folder will be readable by other local users. You can change the privileges to "No Access" if you wish, but then your Public and Drop Box folders will be inaccessible to others, and Personal Web Sharing won't work. Most likely, you don't need to change these settings.
    Step 6
If there are entries in the Sharing & Permissions list for users or groups besides "me," "staff," and "everyone," delete them.
    Step 7
Click the gear icon at the bottom of the Info window and select Apply to enclosed items... from the drop-down menu. Confirm. The operation may take several minutes to complete. When it does, close the Info window.

When you log out or shut down, there will be a checkbox that asks you if you want to reopen windows when you log in. Just uncheck this box. If that isn't it, you may have login items turned on. Go to System Preferences>Users and Groups and then under your name click the Login Itens tab. Make sure nothing is there.
If you want to stop windows from restoring when you open applications (so for example when you open Safari it doesn't open the 50 tab page you just had open when you quit) go to SystemPreferences>General and then hit the checkbox that says Close windows when quitting an application.

how do i stop my ipad from automatically deleting my hotmail inbox and putting it into pop trash? It has only started doing it since i synced with my MacBook Air

If emails are being deleted, then it's not the Apple products, it's the POP account.  When one device reads an email, it's removed from the server, so the other devices can't get that same email.  That's a POP account.

How do I stop my mac from connecting to a non-secure network in my area instead of my preferred secure network

Linc's answer is correct but I know it does not always work.
If security is critical use a wired ethernet connection preferably with a fixed IP and the router's DHCP server turned off.

You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that this Internet criminal has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Any application that is open when you shut down will re-open when you restart unless you deselect this when shutting down/restarting:
Also check System Preferences>Users & Groups>Login items tab and make sure there's nothing listed there that you don't want launched.

  • How do I stop my Mac from asking if I want to allow iTunes to accept incoming network connections?

Every time I open iTunes on my Mac, a drop down box asks me if I "want the application "iTunes.app" to accept incoming network connections?". I always click allow, but it's a pain to have to do this every time.
Does anyone know how I can permanently stop this box from appearing?
    Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem with Keynote.
It's already set to accept incoming connections but it still asks whenever it's launched--annoying.
    Is there a fix?

  • How do I stop my mac from trying to eject a DVD thats stuck in there?

So I've dented where my dvd goes in. I put a dvd in since i thought it would try come out (Stupid idea) now my macbook is just trying to constantly eject it. Is there anyway to stop it from doing that like a terminal code?

Okay - i just looked up yahoo questions on this problem - apparently apple - in their somewhat arrogant wisdom - have decided we all get this whether we want it or not - every time we load a track onto our ipods. I DON'T WANT GAPLESS PLAYBACK! It take HOURS to go through my music library EVERYTIME I LOAD A TRACK and I CAN'T STOP IT! Apparently the only way to fix this is to uninstall itunes quote: "itunes *****" unquote - and just drag and drop music files straight from your computer files into your ipod files. I will be doing this - a friend of mine got so annoyed that she threw her ipod in the bin, went out and bought herself a creative zen - and bought three for her kids as well. Creative Zen does not have this very annoying problem - AND she had no trouble loading her itunes library to her Zen player. (PS - astericks above are apple's idea not mine - apparently su_c_ks is a dirty word :))
