How do I stop popup ads in Safari 8.0?

Recently it seems that there is a sudden increase in popup ads appearing in Safari.  Each one has an "x" that allows it to be deleted, but they keep happening much more often than they used to.  Is there some setting I can make that will block popup ads?

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
          Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
or
          Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
if it's not already checked.

    How do I stop popups from coming up? I have checked the box for popups already.

    My computer is running slower also! The popups are ads & it says hide ad & when I do it opens it up.
    If these ads have a black border on one side with a square "Hide Ad" button with an 'X' in it, then you are infected with the Downlite adware, at least. You may have more than one piece of adware installed.
    If the instructions in the Adware Removal Guide that Kappy referred you to are too tough to follow, that page also has a link to an Adware Removal Tool that will automatically remove Downlite and anything else for you. If you don't want to trust some app that a random guy online referred you to (which is perfectly understandable), the manual instructions will do the job just as well... you could always have a tech-savvy friend help you follow them.

    How do I stop the Norton update Safari SafeWeb extension message?
    The Norton webpage does not open and the "Don't show this message again" box doesnot work.

    Norton Antivirus (made by Symantec) has a very long and illustrious reputation for mangling Mac OS X systems, sometimes to the point where a complete reinstall is necessary. Among other things, it installs kernel extensions which are known to cause kernel panics and system freezes; it contains known and documented bugs which can silently corrupt Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign files, destroy a user's ability to authenticate as an administrator, and (on PPC systems) can cause Classic to stop functioning; and Symantec has on at least two occasions now released flawed .dat file updates which erroneously report certain critical Mac OS X files as "viruses." (Deleting these "viruses" causes damage to the system that in some cases renders it unbootable.)

  • How do you stop popups.  Every time I open a window in Safari another window opens up

    I have iOS 10.10.2, 2.3 Ghz Intel Core i5 processor, 8 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3 memory.
    Just recently, every time I open a window in Safari, another window opens up with advertisements.

    Click here and follow the instructions, or if there’s a type of adware not covered by them on the computer, these ones. If you're willing to use a tool to remove it(you don't need to, but may find it easier), you can instead run Adware Medic; this link is a direct download.

  • How do I stop all of the Safari spam pop-ups?

    Since I downloaded OS Yosemite, my Safari is constantly getting pop-up tabs with spam.  It is very bad and Apple was not supposed to be susceptible to such virus issues.  Someone please advise if you have the same happening and how to stop it.  Can you re-download a new fresh version of Safari to stop it?

  • How do I stop pop-ups in Safari beyond "block pop-up windows" since that does not work

    Do I type more details here? Do I take pictures? Change my font? Why????
    WHY can't I simply ask a question and get other users to comment or answer the question? You have made everything so much more complicated.
    When I go into the Apple store and present these issues, I get silly grins and tee-hees followed by "yeah, this is the way they do it now."
    At one point I am asked if I "LIKE" something. Who cares? Just fix the darn computer! What are tags and why?
    Apple is getting more like Microsoft everyday.

    Pop-Ups windows are effectively being blocked in Safari, but some web-sites have updated their sites to open a window when you click on content on their site.  This is not a Safari issues it is a web-site issue.  I am not sure on how to stop these without stopping other features on the browser. You can get more information about this by clicking here.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop-up_ad

  • How do I stop some webpages in Safari from directing me to games in the iOS app store?

    This really is the most annoying feature in iOS - I could not possibly give a care in the world about Candy Crush Saga, am finding it offensive to persistently be auto redirected to download it in the app store whenever I go to a webpage, even happened after accessing news.BBC.
    Why did Apple remove the option to mark apps as offensive?! Loss in app sales profits? Like many others I paid a £709 fee for a premium product (iPhone 5s)....having done so I find this aggressive form of advertising in poor taste...
    Does anyone know of a setting to stop it?
    Thank you.

    I trust Apple staff read these comments, fully aware end users are powerless with this. Either Apple is happily in on this bad user experience or it is some sort of command which is being exploited and can be fixed.

  • How do I stop popups?

    when I'm playing poppit on pogo.com this full page pop-up appears wanting me to joing Club Pogo. I have to interrupt my game and go back and try again to access Poppit.

    '''bold text'''

    -> click '''Firefox''' button and click '''Add-ons''' (OR Tools Menu -> Add-ons)
    * '''Add-ons Manager''' tab will open
    * go to '''Extensions''' panel
    * select '''AdBlock Plus''' -> click '''Options''' button
    * '''AdBlock Plus Preferences''' window will open
    * go to '''Options''' sub-menu -> select '''Show in Toolbar''' -> unselect '''Show in Status Bar'''
    * click '''Apply''' button -> click OK
    * close Add-ons Manager tab
    -> Now try to perform the first part of my previous reply.
    -> Also, instead of Disabling the YouTube related entries, '''Delete''' them -> click OK
    -> Restart Firefox -> go to youtube.com
    Check and tell if its working.
