I want quicktime to NOT play mpg files in firefox. How can I add a mpg file to the applications section of FF to setup this properly?

QuickTime can be very persistent in wanting to handle (take over) MIME types.
Did you check the file type and MIME setting in the QuickTime Preferences?

I'm trying to digitize old VHS home videos through Quicktime (latest version). But when the tracking goes a bit awry, Quicktime stops recording telling me "RECORDING STOPPED, TRY RECORDING AGAIN."

Here is a screenshot of the error. As you can see, I got a full 4 seconds of video recorded before Quicktime X believed the signal was lost (just a bit of off tracking).

How do I stop Quicktime from being the default player for MP3s on IE6? I've disabled everythging I can think of. but QT still launches in a new browser window when I select an MP3. I just need to get back to Windows Media Player.

Open Quicktime Preferences and go to the Browser Plug-in section. Click on the MIME Settings button and change the mp3 item so that QT is not set to open that file type.

How do I stop Quicktime from trying to reset screen resolution?

I am running an AVID Media Composer video editing system on a WIN2000 platform, and just upgradeded to Quicktime 7.1 from 6 so I could run quicktime Pro.
Now every time I try to play a file in quicktime the screen flickers on and off as quicktime attempts to reset the screen resolution. Very annoying! If AVID is also running this causes AVID to crash (tough when you're using AVID to export a QT file!) Quicktime 6 never did this.
Is there a setting in Quicktime to stop this? Or alternately, can I switch back to a pro version of Quicktime 6?

It depends on what type of computer you're using, but I pasted the relevant steps below:
Unregister a computer from syncing
If you no longer want a computer to sync with MobileMe, you can unregister the computer from syncing. You can unregister any computer that is registered for syncing from any other computer with Mac OS X v10.4.11, v10.5.8, v10.6.x, OS X Lion, Windows XP, or Windows Vista, as long as you know your member name and password.
Unregistering a computer from syncing does not delete any data.
To unregister a computer from syncing:
Mac OS X v10.4.11
Open System Preferences
Click .Mac
Click Advanced
Select the Computer you wish to unregister
Click Unregister

How do I stop QuickTime from running my photos too?

I downloaded QuickTime to play video, but it's running my Photos files too, and I can't find any Options Menu to stop it doing that!

What I'm saying is that it RE-loads itself constantly. This is not a bug or an error. In other words the program is designed so that it does this whether you want it to or not. I get a Microsoft Spyware Alert that informs me that Quicktime has once again hijacked my computer and has placed itself in my active programs, has modified my registry, has added itself to my system tray, and has added itself to my list of startup programs. None of these things are needed or desired. This is assinine, since I rarely use the program and don't need it eating up computer resources so it can sit in my system doing nothing. Once this "feature" has have to go in and remove it from all these places.
So short of simply getting one of the many Quicktime alternatives is there a way to keep this program from invading my system?

How do I stop QuickTime from changing music files to movie files?

I use iTunes exclusively for music & have recently noticed that downloaded files (usually midi files) are showing up in my iTunes library as QuickTime movie files. I usually use Firefox for music downloads but occasionally use AOL, which uses IE. To the best of my knowledge everything to do with music is set to use iTunes, not QuickTime. Now that it's happened I have to go to each & every file & have iTunes convert it to an mp3 when I own a converter that can change all midi files to mp3s at once but can't change QuickTime movie files to mp3s. I have designed a website for an advertising agency using
Flash and ActionScript 3. In the portfolio page, I have several TV
commercials that are available to play. What I need is 1) when the
user leaves the TV ad page, I want the tv commercial to quit
playing (right now, it continues even though the user has moved on
to other pages). and 2) If the user selects a different TV
commercial without first stopping the original one, the sound for
both of the them plays at the same time. I am using the flv
playback component. The video appears to stop, but the sound
doesn't. My TV commercials are external flv files.
I have also made a page for radio ads and I just used play,
pause and stop buttons to control the sound. This page does the
same thing. The sound continues when you move on to another page in
the site. My sound files are also all external sound files.
All of my pages are just individual frames in a main
timeline. Each page has a frame label.

I have my website set up so that the portfolio page occupies
one frame of my timeline. Inside that frame, I have a movie clip
which contains the additional pages of the portfolio section. The
additional pages show examples of the print ads, radio ads, tv ads,
web sites that my client has created. Each of these additional
pages is also one frame of the timeline (this time inside the
portfolio movie clip). When the user clicks a link in the website,
it just takes them to another frame on my timeline.
The entire website is one swf file and each of the pages is
located on one frame of the timeline (either on the main timeline
or inside a movie clip timeline.)
In the tv ads page, I have a button for each of the tv
commercials. When the user selects a specific commercial, then the
actionscript calls that particular ad from an external flv file.
The problem is that when the user clicks another button (to view
another ad or chooses to go to another page in the website (which
involves leaving the current frame in the timeline) the video or
radio ad doesn't automatically stop playing.
I can't really post code, because I'm not sure what code to
post. The TV ads are currently set up using the FLV playback
feature. The radio ads are set up with play, stop, pause and volume
control buttons. When a user here selects a new radio ad, the one
currently playing stops and the new one starts, but when the user
chooses to go to another page without first stopping the ad from
playing, it continues to play.
On the TV ads page, nothing is really working except that the
ad plays and stops when it comes to the end. I'm thinking that I
may need to go back and re-code the TV ads to play without using
the flv playback option.
Any thoughts? I hope this is a little bit clearer.

How do I stop podcasts from playing automatically on my Apple TV instead of my computer?

When I try to watch a video podcast on my computer, it will automatically connect to my Apple TV via AirPlay and try to play it there (even though I have just double-clicked it on my computer). But sometimes I just want to play it on my computer, not on the Apple TV. Once it does go to Apple TV, then I have to go to the bottom of the computer screen and switch from Apple TV to computer. But I would prefer not to have to do this, since the process needlessly turns on my Apple TV every time (and sometimes my Apple TV doesn't work properly, meaning that if the connection can't get established, I can't watch the podcast at all because it won't just let me play on my computer from the beginning). I don't want to turn off updates. I want hotshot programmers to N-O-T configure Firefox to CHANGE what I have set up on my computer. Unable to stop Quicktime from playing certain file types

Recently, Quicktime has begun to insist on playing certain file types accessed via Web Browser. I work at a radio station and we have to be able to import certain audio from the web into our own player/editing software.
I have it set in the preferences that Quicktime not play any audio files.
We have had to restrict the installation of Quicktime on our systems.
Anyone know when Quicktime will allow us to really set preferences again?

Each user account can set their own preferences for QuickTime browser playback.
QuickTime Control Panel/Advanced/MIME Settings allow you to change those that will open via the QT browser plug-in.
If your page code is "sloppy" and you directly link to the audio files then you may get a wide vary of responses from the viewing browser. Some users will download the file while others may get a QuickTime playback in a "new" window.

How can I Stop Video from Playing? (not just mute or pause)

I have a page for playing a video. Below it I have a 'return to previous page' button. If the video is playing and I click this button to return I can still hear the video playing in the background. I know how to mute or pause the video when clicking this button but I would like to know how to completely stop the video so that if I go back to the video page - the playhead is at the start and I can see its thumbnail image again.
Anyone help?

I tried this but it didn't work (just resets and plays in background). Also, I have several videos on one page and a navigation bar at the top. I would like (when I click the Nav Bar to go to another page) any video to stop and reset to its Poster.

Thanks Michael. Apologies for the slow reply I was away for a bit (holiday blitz at work and visiting family madness etc.etc.) back now, I set both options you requested to "never " and retried the CMS software with no change.
I do have progress of a sort though, as a test I took a separate test PC and put a clean install of Win7 on and loaded up the CMS software (it worked perfectly) and then took the version of ole32.dll off that machine and put it onto the computer I had built
for her (using Linux) and...
got a new error code. Darn I was so sure I had found a clever solution this time lol.
Anyway now when the CMS fails it gives me a similar error but the offending module is "ntdll.dll" sooo... I tried taking the "working" version of ntdll.dll from the test box and moving it over (making sure to back up the existing ones
first so I could put them back if needed) to her new PC and the PC would not boot.
It seems to want the original versions of a few Dynamic Link Libraries and if I could somehow give it those while not breaking Win7 it should theoretically work seeing as it no longer errors with ole32.dll.
ntdll.dll however seems necessary for Win7 to boot.
So what I am wondering now is:
Is there some way to have both versions of the DLL file in the system32 folder (bypassing the "cannot have two files with the exact same name in the same folder" thing) or rename the original DLL's something else and somehow make the CMS look for
the new named versions so the system has the updated DLL's it needs to boot/run and the CMS has the old ones it wants to run or is there someway to have a self contained install of the CMS, say on a USB flash drive and give it it's own E:/windows/system32/needed
dll's path to the files it needs?
Willing to try any other options or settings you may have come up with as well.

Give your FLVPlayback component an instance name and then,
possibly from the navigation element that moves the user from that
frame, tell that component instance to stop();
Without a more complete description of your movie's structure
its difficult to tell where, or in how many places, you should
issue the stop() command.

How can I stop QuickTime from streaming all internet videos?

When I updated my ITunes all the media file associations were changed to QuickTime. I want the Windows Media Player to keep the associations.
What I did so far is:
I have disabled all associations in QuickTime player options (except .mov) and turned on all associations in Win Media Player (which I prefer for streaming internet videos) however QuickTime still opens all onling videos. How can I change that. Is uninstalling QT the only solution to this problem?

Changing the the file associations from within QT and WMP settings may not be enough if there are current files on the hard drive that have been previously associated with that media player.
Try right clicking on one of those files, Where it shows; Opens With: click on the Change button, and choose what media player to handle it
