How do I stop Safari from displaying .rtf and .doc files?

I have placed a number of .rtf and .doc files on my website for downloading. I've notice that my other browsers download the actual file when I type in the exact web address to where they are stored, whereas Safari just displays the text in Safari--there's no physical file download. What can I do to force Safari to download the physical file? (Am I not storing the file for download properly?)

Hello jtenny,
Welcome to the Discussions.
I had a similar problem with Safari opening .pdf files. It went away when I went into the following folder: Your Home Folder/Library/Internet Plug-ins, and dragged out any files that looked as if they might make a difference, just one at a time, onto the Desktop. (N.B. I did not Trash them; and if removal made no difference, I replaced the file into the Plug-ins folder.) You will have to restart Safari on each occasion; and on a couple of occasions I found that re-setting Safari (Safari Menu) was necessary to give the application a start-from-scratch with each download attempt.
That's a somewhat makeshift way of approaching it; but provided you don't trash the plugins, and provided you restore those that make no difference, it can't do any harm -- within my experience anyway.
All good wishes from Ireland
Martin

  • How can I stop safari from auto completing url's on my iphone 4 and ipad2?

How can I stop safari from auto completing url's on my iphone 4 and ipad2?  On both devices I have cleared history, I have gone into settings-safari-and cleared history and cleared cookies & data, tried turning my devices on and off and I also have private browsing turned on. Both devices are operating on iOS 5.  When I type in a url I don't want anything to show and auto complete.  Any suggestions?

    This indicates corrupt files.
    A restore should resolve.

  • How do I stop Safari from 'pinwheeling' whenever I am using Yahoo Mail? I really need a correct answer please.                                                                                             Mail? I need a correct answer please.

How do I stop Safari from 'pinwheeling' whenever I try to use Yahoo Mail?
I really need a correct answer please. Other answers have only suggested how to access Yahoo Mail without using Safari. I want to continue using Safari to access Yahoo Mail,if possible.  Thank you.

    Could be a cookie issue...
Go to Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab then click Show Cookies
Type yahoo in the serach field then click Remove All > Done
    Quit then relaunch Safari.
Try accessing your Yahoo mail account.
FYI... there is rarely a sure fire correct response for third party web based email client software. Often takes time consuming troubleshooting.

how do i stop google from tracking me and storing their cookies?
Running OSX 10.7.5 & Safari v6.02 on Macbook Air.?

In practicality you can't. You can set the preference in the Privacy pane of the Safari preferences to ask websites not to track you, but I don't believe Google honors that setting, and they most certainly store all sorts of cookies which you probably will get even if you set Safari to block all cookies since web programmers have ways around those blocks. All you can do is delete the cookies and other junk on a regular basis. Many cookies hide, so I use Cookie from SweetP productions which does a good job of deleting most if not all of the cruft web sites leave.

  • How do I stop aperture from reprocessing my my raw files on import

how do I stop aperture from reprocessing my my raw files on import

Here's the thing: You didn't shoot in B&W and the Raw is in colour.
Your camera shoots everything in colour because that's what the sensor in the camera is - RGB. For B&W shots what happens is that the camera adds a display tag to the shot - and this is written to the Jpeg you shoot, and so it displays.
But a Raw is a sensor dump from the camera. This is all the data that the camera has, and all of that is in colour, so it shows in colour on Aperture.
Convert to B&W in Aperture or shoot Jpeg.

  • How do I stop lion from opening all previously opened files on restart?

How do I stop lion from opening all previously opened files on restart?  I want to wipe all open files, since that seems to be the most efficient way to close lots & lots of open files (that build up over the course of normal activities)

One way is to always quit all applications before you shut down.
An easy way to do this (although in my own experience it doesn't seem to always work perfectly) is to simply hit CMD + TAB + Q and hold down all three keys.
When you do that the computer will cycle through all open apps and close them. If there are any open files that haven't been saved, it won't close them. So you should save everything you want to save before you hit CMD + TAB + Q.

  • How do i stop Safari from freezing while i'm surfing the internet?

Ok, so here's the problem. Every time I go onto Safari, it doesn't respond after i search for something on google or go on Facebook. now, i have to use Safari in Safe Mode each time and the audio is disabled so i can't watch or listen to music videos. Can someone tell me how to stop Safari from doing this? Thanks.

Maybe try another browser like Firefox.
Also, try creating a new user account on your mac, and log in to that, to see if you continue to have the same problems.

  • How do I stop Safari from refreshing?

How can I stop it from refreshing when:
    1) When I press the "back" button, I want it to load what it has previously saved, not to reload the whole page again... this takes much longer and takes up bandwidth
    2) When I open the page again after a while: say I have 4-5 pages of different web pages, and when I open one of the pages that I haven't opened for a few minutes it'll load again when I try to go to that page... again, this takes much longer and takes up bandwidth
So how can I tell Safari just to show me what it has previously loaded and tell it to stop refreshing everything? It's quite annoying.
    Thanks in advance!

I've submitted feedback on this, and posted in another thread. This reloading issue is a real problem for using mobile boarding passes on airlines which support them, such as Continental and American. You may be able to present your boarding pass and scannable bar code at the bag check or security, but by the time you get to the gate, Safari will decide to reload the airlines' web page with your pass. Of course, this confuses the airlines' servers, and it takes several attempts (and minutes) to recall the correct page.
This unrequested reload is a real issue - it breaks the utility of Safari and the iPhone for this application, and many other web sites which have issues with a reload.

  • How can I stop safari from showing my old entries in a drop down menu?

I want to make it clear that I am not talking about the url bar. I am refering to suggestions within a webpage where stuff is entered (for example online homeowork for college students). I cannot seem to figure out how to stop safari from filling in my old entries.
How can I get rid of this box?

Have you checked the Safari Preferences > AutoFill settings?  The Other forms setting is described as follows:
Let Safari save information you enter on webpage forms, then automatically fill in the saved information when you revisit the same webpages. To view or edit your saved information, click Edit.

  • How can I stop Safari from opening new windows unless I want them?

Since Safari 5.02, there is no box to check in the General Preferences to stop Safari from opening a new window when I click on a link. My expectation is to only go to a new window when I want to do it. Most of my searches go down a rabbit hole and I just want to go backwards without closing page after new open page (Same problem with Tabs. I don't want new Tabs all the time either. In fact, the only time I really care about multiple open Tabs or Windows is when I need more than one Window open for data comparison or something like that...)
This is an incredibly annoying new behavior of Safari that I want to shut off. I have 20 windows open in the Window list right now. (I regularly shut off Safari to clear up all the useless abandoned windows.) Firefox doesn't do this, but I prefer Safari.
I tried to search this one, but maybe am not framing the question properly. See lots of discussion of forcing new tabs, but that is not what I am looking for....Can anyone help me?

    Thanks Baltwo,
I will try it, but I don't want new pages in tabs either. I simply don't want the link to open in a new page or tab unless I ask for one. My initial trial has google links opening in new tabs. Why can't I just go down the paths on the same page like the old days? Especially after I find what I want, I will go somewhere else.
With your recommendation, I think that instead of pages open, I will have an abundance of tabs?
Guess I am getting inflexible in my old age. If this is the only option, it is an "improvement" that I don't like yet.
    Firefox doesn't do it.

  • How do you stop Safari from removing last download when it's of the same file type? (e.g., when I download a new pps file I can no longer open a pps file that I've just downloaded)

When I download a .pps file, I can open it from the downloads and everything is great. But if I try to download another one, then I can no longer access the previous download from the download bar. This is very annoying to me as I download and open dozens of these files every day. Is there some way that I can display all the files in the download bar and not just the last file downloaded of a certain type (a way to get Safari to stop hiding the .pps files)

To prevent Firefox from displaying form autocomplete suggestions, you can turn off that feature using the about:config page.
In the address bar, type or paste '''about:config''' and tap the Enter/Return key.
I suggest bookmarking this for easier future access.
In the search box, type or paste '''formf''' and tap the Enter/Return key.
Scroll down to '''browser.formfill.enable''' and tap the Toggle button to switch it from true to false.
That's it. Does it work on Facebook?
''The about:config preferences editor in the mobile version is similar in principle to the desktop version but many of the preferences available on the desktop version have no effect in mobile. This one I only tested on one site, but it seems to work.''

  • How do I stop Safari from refreshing pages on my iPad?

This is really annoying.  I am not sure if it is related to time or to memory.  (it's not auto-refresh set by the website).  I often load up several web pages in tabs that I would like to read on the train to work.  Unfortunately when I open the tabs, they refresh eating into my data plan.  If I switch off data, then the pages still try to refresh and I can't see them at all.
surely there must be an iPad Safari option to stop pages from automatically re-loading?

Did you click on the export icon -- box with an arrow above it?
Click on add to reading list -- old fashion glasses icon?
to see click on book icon
    click on glasses.

  • How can I stop Safari from rampant memory use?

This is the standard error I get whevener I open up a web page with Safari. The address of the object differs however.
6/19/13  WebProcess[304]: objc[304]: Object 0x7fe04a41c7d0 of class NSUserDefaults autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking - break on objc_autoreleaseNoPool() to debug
And indeed, I have left Safari open for about 2.5 hours with 6 tabs open and it has just been leaking. I have 8 gm RAM installed. I currently have 2.1 GB free.
I have the a few apps open in the background, but none of these are running tasks that are leaking.
I know many people had complained of this same leak in Lion, but Apple supposedly addressed it. I have had this problem with every version of ML up to the current (I am running 10.8.4). I installed the latest version of Java. I have gone through all the standard troubleshooting  and even did a clean wipe and reinstallation a few weeks ago. I ran an extended apple hardware test (memory + gfx cards, logic board=fine), as well as a full block scan of my HDD (clean)-clearly this is a software and not a hardware problem.
Though Java/flash are eating up memory, they are not leaking. It is specifically Safari Web Content which is leaking. I think this may have to do with OSX endlessly sandboxing web content/ some sort of garbage collection issue.
One last interesting thing. Looking at the activity monitor, I have seen a couple times Web content's VM jump for a split second to 16 EB (yes exabytes)...the max amount of memory that a 64b processor could hypothetically address...not sure what that's all about...
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.  See below Screenshot + etrecheck info + Safari Web Content open file list : Thanks.

The screenshot was just from my activity monitor, not sure why it stopped showing up.

This is the warning, which appears everytime I start up Safari. The PID and HEX address vary everytime, but always relate to Webprocess.
Running the cmd: "leaks PID -nostacks -nocontext" yields the following output (seebelow). I guess I should run the dylib update. I can try and see if still occurs...?
