How do I stop Windows 7 from rearranging my desktop after updates requiring reboots?

Every time I receive an update from Microsoft (MS) my computer reboots. That's okay. But, MS rearranges all the icons on my desktop! It takes forever to get them back where I NEED them because of class project reqirements to save projects on the desktop
for qiuick access. The computer is mine, not MS's; I paid for the software when I bought the computer, it was installed by ASUS; as I see it, MS has no business rearranging the way I have my desktop. I WANT THEM TO STOP IT!

Try right-clicking anywhere in the blank space on your desktop and from
the menu that appears mouse over “View”, uncheck “Auto arrange icons”. If that doesn't stop it from messing up your icon arrangement the next thing is to make it so you don't care if it happens or not because the same way it can mess things up in an instant
you can put them right back in an instant.
Myself I have found success with to different programs...
UltraMon and Restore Desktop.
UtraMon which is for controlling your desktop when you have multiple monitors.
It has a checkbox setting under "Desktop Icons" and two options "Save Now" and " Restore Now." You get your desktop just how you like it and hit the save now and then if Windows ever jumbles your icons you hit the restore now
and poof everything jumps right back to how it was a second ago and stays put. Every time your icons move you can now move them back exactly the way you like in less than 5 seconds. If you want to change things around yourself just make the any changes you
want and hit the "save now" again and it will remember your new icon layout and jump back to that new arrangement going forward when you hit "restore now."
The other I have not used in a while (once you go multi-monitor you don't
go back :D) but it was free IIRC and only served the one purpose you are seeking was called Restore Desktop. It worked the same but instead of having to open a separate app like UltaMon it just added two options to the right click menu "Save Desktop"
and "Restore Desktop" once you've got everything set the way you like right click anywhere that is not an icon on your desktop and save and anytime things get jumbled you can right click the desktop and choose restore and everything magically jumps
back to the way you want it again.
Cheers!

  • How do i stop window from closing down all the time

watching movie monitor keep going black seem every 5min. and closes have enter my password to start watching movie again. How do I stop that? I put in never in two places put it keep doing it.

This could be related to the screensaver settings.
Check your screensaver settings and ensure that it is either disabled or set to activate long enough to get through a movie without it activating.  The screensaver settings work independently of the power settings, so it may be worth checking both to ensure all fronts are covered.  I have seen this behavior with both.
In Windows 8, this can be done by going to Start (aka the start screen), searching for Screensaver, selecting Settings on the right, and then change your screensaver.

  • How can I stop Firefox from automatically downloading and installing updates?????? UN-Checking box when installing for auto DOESN"T WORK!!!!

Have many performance problems with latest versions of Firefox.
I remove fFrefox and reinstall 18.0 and everything is fine until Firefox automatically updates to 28.x.
I remove check in box when asked if want Firefox Maintenance installed, but downloads updates anyway and next time I bring-up then problems are back!!!
I have to start over again and never X Firefox.
I just want the basic Firefox - simple, FAST and WORKS !!!
Never liked IE - but may have to go back to it.
Chrome is also automatic download update.
using XP, but may have to rethink
    Thanks for any help.

What kind of problems do you have with the Firefox 28 release?
Did you check your security software (firewall, anti-virus) to make sure that the new version in allowed?
It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/fix-problems-connecting-websites-after-updating
You can create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.
    See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

  • How do I stop Firefox from auto-reloading pages after I close one window but not others?

This happens when I have two or more separate Firefox windows open. If I close one, and then open a new window, it automatically goes to the sites that were open in the window I closed (as if it were restoring after a crash).
This isn't an issue when I only have one window open, and I have already set the following:
    browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes to 0
How can I get this to stop?

accessibility.blockautorefresh is not about restoring tabs from the previous session, but about preventing website from using the location response header to redirect to another website.
Firefox will always reload web pages.
Firefox always needs to reload tabs when you restore tabs from the previous session.
*Tools > Options > General > Startup: [X] "Don’t load tabs until selected"
If restore_on_demand is set, pinned tabs are restored on startup by default.
When restore_on_demand is set to true, the restore_pinned_tabs_on_demand pref overrides that behavior, and pinned tabs will only be restored when they are focused.
    browser.sessionstore.restore_pinned_tabs_on_demand (pinned tabs)(false)
browser.sessionstore.restore_on_demand (default as set in Options -> Tabs)(true)
browser.sessionstore.restore_hidden_tabs (tabs in other tab groups)(false)

  • How do I stop windows from re-opening after logging in?

I have read a lot of the recent discussions regarding this default which starts up all the windows and tabs (in the case of Safari) when logging in.
I know that you can manually ask the system not to do this by deselecting the "Reopen windows when logging back in" but can you set a default for this deselection?
Whenever I am automatically logged out through my Security settings, I have no way to deselect this option so I have to wait for ages while my computer starts up all the windows, apps, and tabs that were open at log out or shutdown.
If there is no default option, then if an Apple person is reading this, kindly add one in the next update.
    Thank you.

This seemed like a good solution so I immediately put it to the test following your clear instructions to the letter.
Incredibly a folder was written into this "Saved Application State" folder as you can see:
If you look closely you can see that the folder is still locked because of the tiny lock symbol in the bottom left corner of the folder icon.
How is this possible and do you have another solution?

  • How do I stop itunes from rearranging all my folders

iTunes is driving me crazy. I want all my music arranged in the folders they came in. When I turn on iTunes, it rearranges everything so some songs are listed under album directories and creates artists directories and puts another album directory there with some of the songs. After all this, I gradually begin losing songs completely. I like the user interface on iTunes but everything else about it *****. Is there any way to use iTunes without having it rearrange all my "stuff"?

That is what I thought too but it is not checked.I actually uninstalled iTunes, moved all my music to the my music directory and put them back in directories by individual Album names (minus the songs that dissappeared while being managed by iTunes). I reinstalled iTunes, verified that that box was not checked and selected add folders to iTunes. Do you think I caused the problem by asking iTunes to load the folders into my library? How else could I get the music in iTunes without doing that?

  • How can i stop itunes from scrolling up/down after I editting a song's genre?

This is really bugging me to no end.
I like to add my change song titles and genres for my songs. The problem is once I hit the "enter" button or click elsewhere within the iTunes application to finalize my changes, horrible things happen. Itunes will scroll to a random location and make me look at a different song.
I would be scrolled down to the bottom of a window of my smart playlist editing song 601, I edit, hit enter or click somewhere else, then the itunes window suddenly jumps up to song 23. The blue focus highlight is still on song 601 and I need only to press up/down on my keyboard to look at song 600 or 602. This puts me back close to my original spot. Either that or I scroll from song 23 to song 601, but that is annoying.
This is very irrational behavior and it occurs 80% of the time when I edit things. I mostly edit song titles, genre, and the shows column.

I can't edit the above post. Here is a more grammatically correct version 2 of what I'm trying to say.
My post only applies when editing songs DIRECTLY from the iTunes window. That means you click on the song, wait, then click on it again. Sorta like renaming files on mac or windows computer. I am NOT talking about the separate metadata window that opens up when you right click a song and select "get info" or, alternatively, by selecting a song and pressing ctrl-i or cmd-i.
I like to add/change song titles and genres. The problem is once I type in a new genre/title and hit the "enter" button my entire list of songs jumps to a portion i wasn't viewing. Itunes will scroll to a random location and make me look at a different song on my playlist, same playlist though. And it can be a smart playlist, my entrie library, or a keyword search of some songs I am viewing.
In terms of randomness, iTunes will jump, to the top of my smart playlist after I finished editing song No. 601, I edit, hit enter or click somewhere else, then the itunes window suddenly jumps up to song 23, but does not select it. Instead itunes is still selecting/highlighting song No. 601 and I need only to press up/down on my keyboard to look at song 600 or 602. This puts me back close to my original spot of song No. 601. Either that or I scroll from song 23 to song 601, but that is annoying. Sometimes instead of jumping up from song 601 to 23, it will jump down from 601 to song 1256.
This is very irrational behavior and it occurs 80% of the time when I edit things. I mostly edit song "title", "genre", and the "shows" metadata columns.

  • How can I stop Mozilla from trying to install the updater everytime I open it?

I had issues where Firefox eats memory searching for updates. I disabled the Updater, now every time I open Firefox, it tries to reinstall it. so i open Fire fox, the computer asks me if I want to let the Mozilla Updater" make changes to my computer. I say no and then firefox opens. Is there anyway to keep "updater" from trying to install everytime I open firefox?

Do you mean the updating service that Firefox installs and that Windows runs in the background? You can turn that on and off with a checkbox in the Options dialog. See this article: [[Advanced settings for accessibility, browsing, system defaults, network, updates, and encryption]].

  • How to retrieve the data from the RT card after the host rebooted??

    Thank you for your answer!
how to design my application to retrieve the data that was collected on RT Series hardware while the host PC was not in communication with the embedded LabVIEW RT application.

I rember correctly, that may be one of the more challenging varieties to pull this stunt off.
First, you are going to have to make sure you have enough memory to buffer the data while the host if doing something else.
If you have enough memory you may want explicitly work up a comm scheem between the host and PC (probaly using VI server) that will let the host know there is data avaiailable and it should get it.
So, doe sit seem like we may be getting closer?

  • How do I stop iMac from going to sleep automatically after 15minutes of inactivity

How do I stop imac from shutting down automatically after 15minutes of inactivity, trying to play music but the imac keeps going to sleep, tried changing power saving preferences to never shut down, never go to sleep, unticked put the hard disks to sleep, automatically reduce brightness, but still goes to sleep.

    Try a PRAM/NVRAM reset.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting NVRAM or PRAM, you may need to reconfigure your settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information. If issues persist, your Mac's logic board battery may need to be replaced. The logic board battery helps retain NVRAM/PRAM settings when your computer is shut down. You can take your Mac to a Mac Genius or Apple Authorized Service Provider to replace the battery on the logic board.

  • How do I stop iTunes from starting up in the other active Windows sessions?

I have multiple (3) user accounts on a windows (Vista) computer. When I start iTunes from one account iTunes wants to also start up on each of the active windows accounts and continues to attempt to start iTunes after some time period (90 seconds?).
I get a error screen on the attempts for the User that should not be starting iTunes that reads:
You cannot open the application "iTunes" because another user has it open.
Ask the other user to quit the application, then try again.
I want iTunes to run within only one account. How do I stop iTunes from starting up in the other active accounts?

Connect iPhone - iTunes will launch
select iPhone in iTunes' left column
in iTunes' main window untick "Automatically sync ..."

  • In Yosemite, pasted objects in Photoshop Elements 12 automatically snap to the center of a new window. How do I stop this from happening?

I installed Yosemite yesterday. Now, when I paste an image into a new window to combine it with another image, the layer or layers automatically snap back to the center of the new window. How do I stop this from happening?

Thanks, Barbara. I don't use a trackpad on my iMac, just a mouse. However, I DID discover yesterday that if I press COMMAND-T (the command to Free Transform an image) I can then move the image where I want in the window. I need to use the command every time I move the image, which is annoying--in Mavericks, that Free Transform command was somehow the default.

  • How do I stop Firefox from opening a new window when I go to a search item?

When I do a search, and click on a topic, Firefox opens a new window on the tool bar at the bottom of my screen. How can I stop this from happening?

I'm guessing you use Google for search. There is a setting in Google search to open each result in a new window. (When you use tabbed browsing, that means each result opens in a new tab.) You can check on whether you have that setting turned on as follows:
On a Google results page, click the button on the right side with the "gear" icon, then click Search Settings from the drop-down list. At the bottom of the page is the setting to open results in a new window.
    Is that the culprit?
