Perhaps this is the issue. Some drives come pre-formatted for Mac, others don't. If the drive is empty as yet, why not reformat it and see if this helps.
Plug in the drive.
Now launch disk utilities: Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select the external drive in the left hand column, select the "Erase" tab and select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the Format. Now click "Erase" at bottom right. The utility will reformat the drive. When finished, see if you can move the image files to the drive.

How do I put pictures from iphoto onto external hard drive
I would like to transfer most of my pictures from iphoto to and external hard drive to free up space. I was sold a WD elements and said its a plug and play then drag onto drive. When I try to drap photos to the external drive it won't let me. Anyone have any suggestions?
This is a brand new drive? Make sure it is formatted so you can read and write from a Mac. (Plug and Play could mean P&P on Windows.)
With the drive connected, run Disk Utility. It's in Applcations / Utilities. Select the drive (on the left) reformat it. This will erasse everything on the drive - but I assume it is empty since you could not write to it.
See this thread for details.

How can i store files from a PC on time capsule
How can i store files from a PC on Time Capsule
Actually although the format on the TC is not NTFS but Mac HFS+, that is irrelevant as far as windows is concerned. The TC offers SMB protocol to the network.. so how the TC stores the files is totally irrelevant.
1. TC is by nature not particularly SMB happy..
Change all names, TC and wireless to SMB compatible. Short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
Turn on the guest account to read write access.. assuming you don't have security issues.
Set the workgroup correctly.. don't use wins server.. no body does nowadays.
Note short no space names.. guest access and workgroup all set.
2. Download and install airport utility for windows or just bonjour for windows.. bonjour should be included with the full uitlity but that is not necessary.
3. Just doing the above when bonjour loads it should bring up TC as accessible.. if not, or you need to access it manually.. open windows explorer and type in the address bar.
\\TCName or \\TCIPaddress .. obviously replacing the generic name with the actual one used. In my case. as per the above screen shot. \\TCGen3
You will then see the main root directory of the TC.. data or whatever it is named..
Create a new directory under the root directory for your windows files.. and copy them there.
Note .. some issues can arise if you are using the TC for TM backups.. Please keep a large enough amount of free space available that TM still works.. pondini recommends using disk images.
http://pondini.org/TM/TCQ3.html
As long as you still have plenty of free space this is not an issue but TM may have issues when it fills the drive as it is designed to do. -
I am having trouble moving files from iphoto to a thumb drive. During the same session sometime I can move 10 photos at a time, the next time I can only move one photo and sometime no photos will move. I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet. I was using a MacBook Pro and had no problems like this. I then upgraded to the MacBook Pro with Retina Vision and this is the computer I am having problems with. Can anyone please give me a suggestion in how to fix this problem. THANK YOU.
iPhoto problems should be posted in their forums.
I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.
Needs clarification. You upload from your computer to the internet & download from a website/internet to your computer. So which are you trying to do? Either way, sounds like a browser issue. You need to post in the forum of whichever browser you are using. -
How do I transfer events (photos) from Iphoto to a flash drive?
How do I transfer events (photos) from Iphoto to a flash drive?
In iLife iPhoto on your mac you select the the events in the source list and use "File > Export" to export the photos to your flash drive. Just select the flash drive in the file chooser dialogue that will open.
See Terence Devlin's user tip on exporting from iPhoto:

My startup disk is full?!?! This has been happening for a while and I have dumped 4500 jepegs from iPhoto onto an external drive to try and free up space. I am still recieving the "Startup disk full" message. What more can I do?!?!
Did you empty the Trash?
What size hard drive & how much free space. You should always have a minimum of 10-15% or more free space?

I can't get an album from iPhoto to a flash drive
How do I get an album in iPhoto to a flash drive? How do I get an album from IPhoto to a flash drive????
Couple of things:
was able to use the iPhoto Export menu and export directly to an external flash drive. I was also able to select and drag the photos from iPhoto directly to the drive
Depending on the settings used that can yield exporting and dragging can produce very different results. This User Tip
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
and apparently the limit on the number of files is above anything I have done so far.
The limit is to the number of items on the Tope Level I of the drive. I can't recall it exactly but it's a multiple of 32, hence the trick is to put the image into a folder, that way there's only one item at the top level. -
I want to move pic's in a folder from iPhoto to a flash drive. Everything I've tried allows me to "copy" the folder but no "paste" to the flash drive. What do I do? What am I doing wrong??
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your USB drive is formatted in NTFS, and OS X can't write on disks with NTFS. To fix this:
1. Use an app like Paragon NTFS.
2. Format the USB drive in another filesystem like "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", "MS-DOS (FAT)" or "exFAT" > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Make a backup of your files on the external disk.
After doing that, you will be able to copy your photos to the external disk. Note that you can also use the Export feature in iPhoto to get more export options -
How to transfer RAW files from iPhoto to lightroom without converting them to jpeg
When I transfer RAW image file from iPhoto to my lightroom library they appear as jpeg files, how do I transfer them as RAW?
Are you having a problem? What have you tried? Do you have Apple's camera connection kit?
With the CCK, you can connect the camera or the camera's SD card.

Exporting Raw files from iPhoto to a thumb drive
I shot some photos in camera Raw with my Canon 40D and uploaded them to iPhoto. When I dragged copies of the Raw image file to the desktop they were converted to Jpeg. When I tried dragging them directly from iPhoto to a thumb drive, the same thing happened -- they got automatically converted from Raw to Jpeg.
How can I move Raw files to the desktop or a thumb drive and keep them Raw?
Thanks
GregYes, iPhoto has a RAW converter, it's the same one Aperture uses but with less options. The options are available under the Adjust button in Editing Mode
2. If I shoot in Raw and import into iPhoto then convert to, say, TIFF, does iPhoto have two image files, one RAW, one TIFF?
Yes because iPhoto always preserves your Original file, no matter what. So, if you save it as a jpeg you also have two image files...
