How do I sync iPages '08 on my Mac with iPages '09 on iPad?

Is there some way to sync documents created on my Mac with Pages '08 with Pages '09 on the iPad?  When I have attempted to sync via iTunes, I receive a message that the documents have to have been created in Pages '09 in order to be synched.  Would iCloud be the solution for the Pages issue?  Unfortunately my Mac is 4-years old (version 10.5.8) and I am still using Leopard.  According to the iCloud info page, I would need to update to Lion in order to access iCloud.  If I upgraded to Lion in order to access iCloud, would I then be able to access on the iPad documents which were created in Pages '08 on my Mac?  Or would I still need to upgrade my Mac to pages '09 (and if so would all the documents created in Pages '08 automatically convert to Pages '09)?  And is Apple releasing a new Pages anytime soon?  An '09 version sounds outdated and one likely to be updated.  I'm retired and really don't need all of the iWork package features other than Pages.  I have resorted to attaching documents I created with Pages 08 to emails to myself.  However, when I open the attachment on the iPad, I can't save the document in Pages '09 on the iPad because it was created in Pages '08.  I know there has got to be an easier way to deal with this issue and hopefully someone in the community can help me with this.  As you can tell, a techie I am not but giving it my best shot.  Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

I can't seem to locate them in the Mac App Store however.
If you have Mac OS X Leopard, you have no access to the Mac App Store because it is a Store in an app, similar to the iTunes App Store, which is a store in an app. In order to have the Mac App Store app, you must upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6 and update 10.6 to 10.6.8.

Would the newest version of Pages (purchased individually) work with the "Leopard" program or is "Snow Leopard" a core program requirement in order to purchase abd download this product individually.
Apps bought from the MAS require Snow Leopard and some require 10.6.6 or higher.
Do you know if iCloud solves the Pages 08 problem, i.e., could I read '08 documents on the iPad via iCloud?
I tried to answer this in my first comment. You already know that Pages on your iPad cannot use docs from Pages '08 on your Mac that you have imported by emailing them to yourself, so getting them onto your iPad using iCloud is not likely to be any different.
