How do I sync music from an external drive to my itunes library?

Hello,
All my files (music, films etc) are stored on an external hard drive. I've set the drive as my iTunes Media Folder in preferences.
How do you import all the files into my iTunes library?
Thanks!

File > Add to library and select the folder on the external.

  • How do I sync music from an external drive

I recently moved all my iTunes content including music to an external hard drive (multiple reasons: space, SONOS capability, etc.). In addition, I purchased a new iMac. I can wipe the nano, no problem, but how do I get music from the external drive that is not on my computer (but which iTunes will play via iCloud) onto the nano?
Do I need to download everything back to my computer from iCloud and sync that way or is there some toggle I'm missing that allows me to load the external drive --> iTunes--> nano?
    Thanks!

    Jairy,
You may need to run through the following steps:
Once you've done that, follow the next set of steps to change your iTunes Media folder location to the new drive and then consolidate your library to the new location. This not only copies your audio and media files over, it also retains your ratings and playlists. Note: If you move your music and media to an external hard drive, you will need to have that drive connected to access your files. No matter what, it's always a good idea to have a backup of the media you have in iTunes.
    Open iTunes.
From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences.
Click the Advanced button in the Preferences window.
Click the Change button in the iTunes Media folder location pane.
In the Change Media Folder Location window that appears, navigate to the location where you would like your new iTunes Media folder to be created.
Note: By default, your iTunes Media folder is a folder named "iTunes Media" in ~/Music/iTunes/ where the tilde "~" represents your home directory.
Click the New Folder button in the Change Media Folder Location window.
In the New Folder window that appears, enter the name of the new iTunes Media folder.
    Click Create.
Click Choose in the Change Media Folder Location window.
Click OK in the Advanced window.
From the File menu, choose Library and then Organize Library if using iTunes 9 or later. If you're using iTunes 7 or iTunes 8 for Mac, choose File > Library and then Consolidate Library.
In the Organize Library (or Consolidate Library) window, select Consolidate files.
Click OK.  Important: This action copies all of your music and media files to the new location. There must be enough hard disk space available to copy all of your music and media files.
After the folder has been copied, locate your original iTunes Media folder, and drag it to the Trash. Important: Don't remove the iTunes Library files that may be in the same location as the iTunes Media folder. For more information about the iTunes Library files, see this article.
Quit iTunes and then open iTunes once more.
If you receive the alert "The folder containing "iTunes Library" cannot be found, and is required. Please choose or create a new iTunes library," you most likely moved the iTunes Library files. If this is the case, move them out of the Trash and back to where they were.
If you can open and close iTunes without encountering the above alert, empty the Trash.

  • How to download all songs from my external drive into my itunes library

I have enough Gbytes to not use an external drive for my music.
How do I proceed to download all songs from the external drive on my internal drive?

    Hello there, Laetidela.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great steps on how to move your iTunes library from an external hard drive to your computer:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527
    External drive
This option requires more work than Home Sharing, but it creates a backup of your iTunes library on the external drive in addition to moving your content.
    Notes before you start:
You can use most iPods as an external drive.
Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). Because of this, you can't use a Mac-formatted iPod or external drive to move your music to a Windows PC. See iPod: How to determine iPod's hard disk format if you're not sure how your iPod is formatted.
Mac OS X can read Windows-formatted iPods and drives. This means there are many ways to migrate your information from your old Windows-based PC to your new Mac.
Mac OS X: To be sure external drives appear on your desktop, choose Preferences from the Finder menu. Be sure the options for "External disks" and "Hard disks" are enabled.
Part 1: Locating and consolidating the iTunes Media folder
Part 2: Copy iTunes folder from the old computer:
Part 3: Get iTunes ready on your new computer
Part 4: Back up any music that's already on your new computer
Part 5: Copy music to your new computer
Part 6: Add preexisting music that was on the new computer back into the library
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • How can I merge music from an external drive and my iMac.

Well, I've made progress. I have a set of tunes on my external hard drive that contain some, but not all the tunes on my iMac in addition to tunes not on my iMac. I just replaced my hard drive on my PowerBook. I'd like to have all my Tunes on it. All the music on my iMac plus the non-duplicated music on my external hard drive. Is there a simple way to do this. In my question yesterday I had transfered all the music from my iMac. I then took and transferred the music folder from my external drive to my desktop and tried to import it into iTunes. What a mess. I finally got everything deleted so there is now nothing in either my music folder or iTunes. Can someone help please.
    Thanks
    Carl

File > Add to library and select the folder on the external.

  • Please help - how do I import music from my ipod into a new itunes library?

    Hello
I would very much appreciate it if someone could tell me how to get the music from my old ipod mini into the new itunes library on my new laptop.
The mini was previously sync'd with my old PC which died so my files are only present on the ipod. Upon loading itunes, the software is only letting my sync the ipod providing I wipe it (obviously not desirable...)
    Thanks for any support, Andy

Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" as you already know will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iRepo Mac and Windows
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • How to move my music from my itouch back to my itunes library

i had to restore my computer so now i have no music on it. I want to move my music from my Ipod back to my Itunes on my computer. Last time i tried this i clicked sync and it just deleted all my msic off my ipod. this just seems like the dumbest thing in the world that syncing cant go both ways. Please help me

Copy everything from your backup copy of your computer.  Certainly you did not restore your computer without making sure that your backup copy of your computer was up to date.
The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The exception is itunes purchases.  Without syncing:  File>Transfer Purchases

  • How do i transfer music from my ipnone 4 to my  itunes library?

i cant copy or drag and drop music from my iphone to my itune library or pc.

You have to "sync" the music to the PC through iTunes. You cannot just drag and drop the music as if it were a flash drive or something like that.
And usually, you are only allowed to sync your music to the computer that you originally set it up on, and not on someone else's computer or like your work computer. To do that you would have to reset the iPhone and wipe all the media off of it. (and I don't think that's what you want)
