How do I sync my Ipod to a new library after my computer has crashed?

iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
Sync transfer is one way, matching the device content to the content on the computer, except purchased content as mentioned above.  For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing):
- Senuti - http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/
- Phoneview - http://www.ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/
- MusicRescue - http://www.kennettnet.co.uk/products/musicrescue/ - Mac & Windows
- Sharepod (free) - http://download.cnet.com/SharePod/3000-2141_4-10794489.html?tag=mncol;2 - Windows

Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141
In general do not regard your i-device as a reliable unique storage for your media. It is not a backup device and everything is structured around you maintaining a backup of your media on a computer backup.

I had my itunes on one of my few computers that I have. The hard drive on the computer that I had my itunes on went out and I had to replace it, losing my itunes and other things, but I cared more about the itunes then I did with anything else. Now when I try to download itunes and try to sync my ipod, it says that if I sync it, all music with be replaced, and I don't want that. How do I sync my ipod to that new itunes without losing all my songs?

  • How can I sync my ipod to my new library without losing all the pictures?

A few years ago I bought an ipod classic and I downloaded some really great pictures. The ipod was synced with my old desktop which crashed and stopped working completely so I threw it away. I really want to download my new music onto my classic because it has so much free GB but I cant afford to lose my pictures. Is there any way I can copy them onto my PC?

Specifically I'm looking to keep all my photo's on the phone.

Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device. Unless you have the music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.

As for you own music, you may have to use a third party software to copy over. A good Free one is called Sharepod which you can download from Download.com here:

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the new computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like on of those discussed here:
    newer copy
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.
Note that the iPod backup that iTunes makes does not included synced media like apps and music.

  • How do i sync my Ipod to my new laptop?

How do I sync my Ipod w/ my new laptop? It is apparently still registered to my now dead PC. Only some of my music shows up in the laptop library. I would like to have all my music on both the new laptop and Ipod, will not sync, even manually. How do I take care of this, with out having to pay Apple $20.00 for their time? Is it something simple or should I just pay them the $20.00? Desparately seeking an answer.....

The ipod will sync with one computer at a time.  Syncing to another will erase the current content from the ipod.
You should copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.
    Then sync

You might consider itunes match for moving CDs you've copied into your itunes library if you dont have a way to use home sharing.
iTunes match is an optional service offered by apple that costs about $25 a year.  It scans your music library and if it finds music that is already in apple's itunes catalog it'll automatically "unlock"/"store" these in the cloud for you.  Items that it does not find in the catalog it'll upload and store these in the cloud for you and you can download them on your devices.  See http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/

Question: I have a computer at home and one at work. Can I update my iPod music collection from more than one computer?
Answer: Yes. When you first connect iPod to your computer, iPod recognizes that computer as its "home" computer. Each time you connect, iPod automatically downloads the music library stored on it. When you connect iPod to a different computer, iTunes will inform you that iPod is linked to a different iTunes library and will ask whether you wish to erase iPod's contents and sync with the new computer's library. If you will be connecting to multiple computers frequently, configure your iPod to manually manage music. This will allow you to selectively drag songs, albums, or playlists from the second computer to your iPod without compromising the existing music.
Synchronization generally occurs only in one direction, from your computer to your iPod. This means you typically cannot transfer music, automatically or manually, from your iPod to a computer, and you cannot use iPod to copy a music library from one computer to another. An exception to this is the transfer purchases feature which allows you to restore purchased iTunes content to your computer from your iPod. Additionally, if you legally are allowed to copy music or other media files, you can configure your iPod as a storage drive to move media files.

Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time. It will recognize the iTunes library on the Mac as a new library. If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library. So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your Mac first.

  • I have just changed my computer as my old one died... but now cannot access my old itunes account so i have set up a new one with another email address. how can I sync my ipod to my new computer without wiping all my music ?

I have just tried to sync my ipod to a new computer as my old one died but as I cannot remember my previous log in I created a new itunes account. I now want to sync but it says it will wipe my music off my ipod. Does anyone know how I can do this now ?

If you have purchases on your iPod Shuffle that you want to sync back to iTunes, but are under the Apple ID you no longer have access to, you'll need to reset that account information. You can use this link to reset your password.
    https://iforgot.apple.com/
If that doesn' work or help, you'll need to contact iTunes support and have them walk you through the process of resetting the older account information.  Once you know the email and password again, you can authorize your new computer and transfer any purchases from this account back to iTunes.
For all non-iTunes purchased content, you'll need to the assistance of some sort of third party software that is not supported by Apple. • Help! How can i sync my ipod with a new computer?

how do i sync my ipod touch with a new computer?  the old computer it was synced with is completely broken.  I don't want to loose any songs, especially the ones I didn't buy on itunes.

For music obtained from other than the iTunes Music Store, you need to browse the app store and purchase an app intended for that very purpose.  I'm unable to recommend one because I've never had reason to use such an app.  DO THIS FIRST!
For songs purchased from iTunes, simply do a sync to the new computer.  A box will appear asking if you wish to transfer purchases.  If, for whatever reason, that fails, this is "Plan B."
