Hi, thanks for this info. it helped me find the space number I've used. Can you tell me how much space is "169.5 MB" My MAC has 2GB.....have I used much? or more than half of my space? I ask because I have many photos and on my MAC and need to know if I should delete some since I had an issue with "Start Up Disk Being Full"

My imac is showing that the hard drive is full however, I have tried several times to delete files, movies, and pictures to free space and its still shows zero space is available. Yesterday i freed 4.4GB and this morning when I turned it on its back to zero space available. Any ideas on what the problem could be would be appreciated.

Do you use the mac's mail application? If you do open up finder, then go to the menu bar and click go, then hold down option, and a hidden folder called "library" should appear in the drop down box. Click it. Find a folder called mail and click once on the folder "mail" then press and hold command and click the letter "i" on the top right of this little window it will give you a size, how big is it?

How can I keep Lightroom 5 from taking up space on my local hard drive?

I have a relatively large photo catalog (200k photos +) that I am in the process of paring down with the help of Lightroom 5. Along the way I have kept certain groups of photos published to Flickr using Smart Photosets so that if I eliminate a duplicate photo from the catalog I will be able to "re-publish" and eliminate that duplicate from the published collection.
My Catalog Files, My Backups, and the actual image files that are referenced in the catalog are all located on an external drive. I did this so that I could have everything on one drive for the time being while I eliminate a ton of photos from the catalog.
The issue that I am running into is that while a collection is being published to Flickr I get a message popping up telling me that I am low on disk space on my local (C) drive and that I need to free up some space. This is odd because everything is located on the external drive (catalog and image files) and I am publishing to Flickr.
I am just trying to figure out if there is a default somewhere that is causing Lightroom to create new thumbnails or previews somewhere on my C drive while I am publishing images to Flickr or something like that. Any idea what sort of data might be accumulating in the process here? And is there anyway to move it all or eliminate it for the time being while I am finishing the elimination of duplicate files from my catalog?

RAM is different to disk space. Niel's #2 instruction tell you how to check disk space. That is where the installer will be saved when you download it.
Make sure the disk has well over 20-30GB free, the OS can perform badly if you fill the disk too full.
Since you have 6GB a 'cap' on your downloads I'd strongly suggest that you do the following if you ever manage to download the installer…
Wait for the download to complete, when the large window pops up prompting you to install OS X click Cancel.
Now open the Applications folder, find the installer (called 'Install OS X Yosemite'). Copy that to another disk for safe keeping.
When copied you can open the installer application from the Applications folder & continue to install OS X.
The reason for making a copy is because the installer will delete itself after installation. If you ever need to re-run it you will need to download it again. This is not good when you have a download limit on your internet connection.
Do you have access to any other internet connections? A friend, relative or business that has no download cap? It could be expensive to keep hitting your cap.
P.S. The installer may restart instead of resuming the download, so it is possible that the entire 5.7 GB will need to be downloaded again.

The more stuff you got, the longer the whole update will take...increasing the chances something might not go smoothly.
So delete movies/videos first as they take up the most space. You can copy them back later. It's worth the small hassle imo.

You should be able to see both the total capacity and remaining available on the Disks tab within the AirPort Utility.
ref: AirPort Utility > Select the Extreme > Manual Setup > Disks > Disks tab, and then, click on the shared disk volume name.
Although the following is an AirPort Utility screen-shot of a Time Capsule, it should look identical for the AirPort Extreme.

This is not an exact, immutable value, but it is usually understood that Mac OS X needs about 10% to 15% free hard drive space.
Now you most probably can count a minimum of 5 GB, in order to run the (about) 4 GB system (Tiger), regardless of the total size of the HD.
Another useful info:
Depending on your habits and on what you do with your computer, look at the fluctuations of the VM size number in Activity Monitor. It shows quite accurately how much free space the OS needs to "breathe" well.
In a word: 10-15%.

This is more likely a matter of Apple specifying 4G as 4,000,000,000 byte rather than 41024*10241024 byte like your computer counts.
Using the "1000 notation", your 3.85GB would require 4.1GB. Try trimming your library down a bit more (to around 3.7G). I don't have my Nano yet, so I cannot verify if the device actually uses any of those "4G" for things other than storing your data.
