How do I tell what is in the Other category of storage?

My phone shows its almost full, but the biggest catogry of storage is the "other" at 6.9g.  How do I see what makes that up?

"Other" normally incudes the iOS, app data, messages and email.  It normally is not much over 1 GB, often less.  Unless  you have a massive number of messages on your phone, there is corrupted data appearing as "other."
To get rid of it, restore the iOS using iTunes.  You can try also restoring a backup, but the backup may contain the corrupted data and it will reappear on the phone.  In that case, you'll have to restore as new.

  • HT201656 how can i see what is in the "other" category

Can you see whats in the other category, and delete what you don't want?

The other catrgory includes system files and saved game data. The only way to see what's in it and to delete it is to jailbreak (which I don't recomend doing right now) but if you would like to do that, you need to root the phone, however I don't want to get into jailbreak stuff on an Apple run forum.

  • ITunes - What's in the 'Other' Category?

After syncing my iPod from iTunes, I noticed that I now have *1.49 GB in the 'Other' category,* 5.41GB in 'Audio' category, 367.1 MB in 'Video' category and 152.5 MB 'Free'. Total capacity 7.41GB (8G nano).
I have no shows, pictures, podcasts, etc. All I have are songs and videos.
So, what's in the 'Other' category/folder, and why is it so large?
I do not remember ever explicitly putting anything in 'Other'.
How can I get delete stuff from it - or should I delete stuff from it (the 'Other' category/folder')?

I did a 'restore' and most of the 'other' category capacity went down (1.49GB -> 69.4MB),
    thank goodness!!

  • The "Other" memory on my ipad2 keeps growing.  What is in the other category?  It is now up to 3GB

When synching my iPad2 I am trying to stay within the 32GB of memory but this is filling up fast.  I have a lot of music and pictures...
I was wondering about the 3GB of "Other" that shows up as yellow on the usage bar.  What is in the "Other" category that I could manage?
Is it files used by various apps?  Or ??
    Appreciate any feedback on this.
    Thanks

    Hi King_Pinguin,
I have the same issue, my other category has grown to 7GB. Deleted the cache, cookies, but that removed 500kB. My books are 0. I am going app by app to see if I can delete data, but it is not clear where the problem is. Removed all games - didn't impact the other category at all.  Any advice? Do I just totally remove everything, and then resync everything after that? Any advice welcome, right now I can barely use my iPad.

  • What is the "Other" category under storage and how can i delete items from this?

My disc is almost full.  "About this Mac" says that I have 47 GB of "Other."  What is this Other and how can I delete items from this?

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown asBackups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Reboot and it should go away.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size with the largest at the top. It may take a few minutes for ODS to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • What makes up the "Other" category on the I-Touch

I have synched my I-touch with MS outlook. I synched Contacts and Calendar. The total amount of space used after synching is 9.62 GB. This seems like an awful amount of space used. How can I determine what makes up the 9.62 GB?

  • What is in the "other" category on my 20 gig IPOD space usage display

Just updated to I-Tunes 7 which shows my data space allocations on my 20gb IPOD. I have the following; 3.07g music, 9.77g Other and 5.75g free space.
I have never downloaded anything but music to the IPOD. What is the "other" and can I get rid of it? and how do I get rid of it to free up space?
    Thanks!

If there's nothing on the iPod you want to keep which isn't in your computer, follow the instructions in this article. Some iPods cannot charge enough over the computer's USB connection to complete the restore, so you should have another way of charging the iPod before proceeding, such as the iPod's AC adaptor or a 6-pin FireWire port.

  • I'm up to 55 gb on my 60 gb HD--how can I tell what's hogging the space?

I have 10,000 pics on iphoto, which I thought was the culprit, but after backing that up to an external, that only is 12 gb. I need to free up more space to load iphoto6 and do some movies.
What's the best way to find out exactly what is using up space? And what are the common culprits?
    thanks!

You can use WhatSize to find out where the space on your hard disk is going; don't delete anything without getting further advice. Possible causes include:
    1. One application or process writing a large number of entries to a log file.
    2. An application trying to write large amounts of data to a disk which isn't connected to the machine.
    3. Large numbers of swapfiles appearing in the /private/var/vm/ folder.

  • How do I tell what speed (wireless) the ATV is connected to my router at?

Just swapped one 'n' router for another (Netgear DG834N for DGN2000) and am finding that syncing media between iMac and ATV is suddenly taking 10x as long so wondering if my ATV is connected at full speed. I've confirmed that the iMac is connected to the router @ 130Mbps - should that be 270Mbps for 'n'?
...devices are all very close to router for testing purposes and signal strength is excellent.
    Cheers,
    Adam

The tv should operate at the fastest network speed available.
130 Mbps is what I would expect from a base station that is transmitting at 2.4 Ghz 802.11n with 802.11b/g compatibility.
If you have changed a 802.11g router to a 802.11n, then you may or may not see improved performance depending on your connection between the base station and the mac/pc, but if your performance is worse you may want to examine the router settings.

  • What is in the "other" category of my ipod?

When i sync my ipod there are the categories of my ipod like music, apps, photos, and other. What does "other" contain?

I did not find a folder called "other" when I extracted a backup, but I found a separate folder for bookmarks. So I guess no such data inside that folder.
Maybe the idevices use it as a kind of temp folder during the sync process, it used to be bigger in the times of iOS 3.x and you could watch it changing the size while the sync was processing.

Hello, in Oracle 11.2.0.3, RHEL 6 x86-64, how can I tell what tables have the highest transaction activity?

    Humbly,

What version of Oracle are you running (standard or enterprise)?
Easist system is to run an AWR or statspack report. If you run either of these you will see sections on segments (so segments by logical reads, physical reads) which is easily digestible.
v$segment_statistics will also give you a breakdown on segment access.
