How do I transfer a folder of docs to ipad

I am not sure how to do this. I have a lot of word documents and I have the pages app on my ipad. I want to edit the word docs in pages, but the only way I could get them to my ipad 2 was emailing them. They would only open as an uneditable document. How do I send them to the cloud, or can I add the documents to my ipad via a sync.
I have been trying a few things and can't get the docs over, let alone to open in pages.

If you haven't done so, setup an iCloud account > Learn how to set up iCloud on all your devices
To keep your Pages documents up to date, once you have iCloud setup, on the Mac open System Preferences > iCloud
Make sure Documents & Data is selected.
On the iPad tap Settings > iCloud
Make sure Documents & Data is switched on.
The next time you edit a document on your Mac it will be updated on the iPad and vice versa via Wi-Fi.

Connect and select your iPad on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes, and on the right-hand side there should be a series of tabs, one of which should be Photos - if you select that tab you can then select which photo folders to sync to the iPad. If your iPad 2 has a newer iOS version than your new iPad Air then you'll need to update the iPad Air to newest iOS before you can restore it from the iPad 2's backup. Its conceivable that being in the store the new iPad air does not have the most recent iOS installed.
Anyway as to the AT&T service. you should not have to anything on the old iPad.
Simply remove the sim card, go to your AT&T store and ask for a new sim that fits your new iPad with your current service on it. Then simply insert the new sim card into the new iPad. In the process of setting up the new sim card, the old one will be deactivated by AT&T.
Without a sim card the old iPad will have no cell service.

To copy photos that were originally synced from a computer you will need a third-party app such as Simple Transfer which can copy them off via your wifi network. But as photos are 'optimised' when they are synced to the iPad, any that you then copy back to a computer may not be exactly the same as they originally were on your computer.
You should also be able to copy albums that you've created directly on the iPad via apps such as Simple Transfer (though I haven't tried it)

Back up your old one. I use and prefer iTunes, but back up all the data, etc.
Then unplug it. Plug your new one in and go through the setup steps. When you see the option to set up as new or restore from the backup you just made, choose that and your new iPad will be a near clone of the old one.
