Better yet, download the VLC app from the App store, which is free.
Use iTunes to select apps installed on the iPad, scroll down and find a box which enables you to transfer files into VLC direct.
Transfer any video file, any format, into the VLC app.
Enjoy watching any video file without conversion issues.

My MacBook Pro hard drive recently had to be replaced by Apple, because it quit for some reason they couldn't identify. I saved a folder from my PC to a hard drive. The folder is called photos and contains lots of sub-folders (years and months) and in those are many jpeg photos and little movies which i uploaded from my ifone and my sony camera over the past 5 or 6 years.
I worked out how to drag the folder into iPhotos and it imported all the photos so I can view all the photos but when I drag the same folder into iMovies it put all the movies and the photos into there too.
All i want is the photos in iPhotos and the movies in iMovies without having to go through every subfolder and dragging them into imovies individually as this will take forever.

Unless you are planning on editing your videos, I would suggest that you simply store your videos in iPhoto and view them from there as well:

All you have to do is connect your iPad to the computer using the USB cable. If it has photos in the Camera Roll it will be recognized by the computer as a camera and you can load the photos to your computer.

You can sync photos and videos to your iPad via your computer's iTunes.
To sync photos, connect and select your iPad on the left-hand sidebar of your computer's iTunes (you can enable the sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac), and on the right-hand side there should be a series of tabs, one of which should be Photos - if you select that tab you can then select which photo folders to sync to the iPad. You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync.

Interesting note: I can see the files when I use the search function, but when I tap either file, I return to my home screen. The video does not open. I can transfer the file to my MBA, and it plays fine, but I cannot figure out a way to delete them.

Open the Movie mp4 in Quick Time 10. There is a share button (or click share on the menu) and select iTunes. It will take awhile for the file to be imported into iTunes.
