How do I transfer an Ipod to a new laptop?

I recently bought my wife a new Dell XPS Windows XP laptop for Christmas. I want to transfer her over to using the laptop for her iPod mini, including all of her music in iTunes on the desktop. I was also curious how the Consolidate Library command would work considering I have other music for a windows based mp3 player I sync through Windows Media Player 10..... need HELP!

How to Copy and Move your Music Files from One Computer to Another
This is the conceptual framework with related and important links. Apply and adapt it to your specific situation and equipment resources.
The safest, quickest, and most optimal method to move your Library to a new computer is to actually clone the entire ‘iTunes’ folder (directory) structure, rather than just copying just the song files. By copying the entire ‘iTunes’ folder and all sub-folders, you capture not only the music files, but the all-important ‘iTunes Library.itl’ database file (usually located in the ‘iTunes’ folder), which contains all the data about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). See: What are the iTunes Library files?
Install iTunes on the new computer. Then go back to your old computer and move (copy) the "iTunes" folder which usually resides inside your "…\My Documents\My Music" folder from the old computer to the exact same place (both Drive Letter and complete Path) on the new computer. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will look and behave exactly the same way it did on the old, Play Counts, Ratings, Comments and all!
NOTE: It is usually safer moving files between computers with the same version of iTunes!!
Here's a list of methods to copy and move your music files from one computer to another:
1) Use an External Hard Drive (ExHD) to move the complete files and Folder structures from one computer to another (my preferred option). You can clone’ the entire ‘iTunes’ folder structure in one very easy step. Also great to have available for complete backups of your Library. External hard drives now run less than $100 for 200-250GBs of storage. See This Link
2) Directly connect the two computers....
- 2a) Connect them through a Router &/or Network
- 2b) Directly connect using an Ethernet cable: Straight for using at least one Mac; or Crossover for PC/PC Instructions here.
- 2c) Connect them via a USB-to-USB Network Bridge. Example here. There are various types out there (use Google).
....Then copy the files from one computer to the other.
3) Use the iPod as a transfer device, as this extensive Apple link explains. It will be a bit easier if your iPod has a larger capacity than your music collection, otherwise you will need to perform multiple copy/move transfers. This well written process also works fine while using any other data transfer medium (ExHD, Flash Drive, DVD, CD, Zipp, Jazz, etc.).
4) Burn several DVDs (at 4.7GBs each) with your music data files and folder structure, and load them onto the new computer. Re-writable DVDs are more cost effective (if your DVD drive can manage these types).
5) Burn 6x more on CDs (at 700MB each) than in #4 above and load the files and folders on the new computer. Re-writable CDs are more cost effective (if your CD drive can manage these types).
6) Use a larger USB Flash drive (1GB - 4GB) to move the files and folders. Best if the flash drive is larger than your Library, otherwise you will need multiple copy/move transfers.
These are links to various additional instructions on performing the transfer (read them all, but some listed steps may not be required depending on your specific situation):

i have a i tunes account but laptop is broken . how do i sync my ipod to a new laptop?

Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device. Unless you have the music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.

As for you own music, you may have to use a third party software to copy over. A good Free one is called Sharepod which you can download from Download.com here:

  • How do i sync my Ipod to my new laptop?

How do I sync my Ipod w/ my new laptop? It is apparently still registered to my now dead PC. Only some of my music shows up in the laptop library. I would like to have all my music on both the new laptop and Ipod, will not sync, even manually. How do I take care of this, with out having to pay Apple $20.00 for their time? Is it something simple or should I just pay them the $20.00? Desparately seeking an answer.....

The ipod will sync with one computer at a time.  Syncing to another will erase the current content from the ipod.
You should copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.
    Then sync

  • My old laptop crashed, how do I connect by Ipod to my new laptop without losing current contents of my Ipod?

My IPOD classic was synchronized to an old laptop computer that crashed recently. I just got a new laptop computer and I am wondering how I can connect by IPOD to it without losing all data I have on it?

Copy all the content that is currently on your iPod to your new laptop first. See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • How can i transfer my ipod to my new itunes without losing all music

my computer crashed and now all i have is my cousins and i need to know how to convert my music onto her new itunes, hopefully without losing all my music. if thats possible, so there is no way i can go back to my old itunes, her computer is the only itunes i will be able to use. how can i transferr my ipod touch to her computer without losing all data???

    Welcome to the discussion,
Create a new user in windows to keep your iTunes library separate and log in. Make sure your new computer is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.
    Restoring: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • How do i Switch my ipod to me new laptop ?

I just got a new laptop and i need to switch my i tunes and i pod to sync to the new comuputer does anyone know what i need to do ? Thanks, Scott

    Hi there,
Well first of you would need to copy all of your content to your new iTunes folder:
    1. Go to your iTunes main folder (C:\Users\Dom\Music\iTunes)
    2. Your main files in which you would want is located in the folder (iTunes Media), this contains your music, films, apps etc.
    3. Copy all the files inside the folder and place them onto a external hard drive.
    4. Then on your new laptop, connect the Harddrive and open iTunes, go to file and add folder to library, find the files in your harddrive and add them.
if done correctly, all of your content should be in the new iTunes. When you sync the iPod to the new iTunes, it will automatically delete all content on your iPod then you will have to add it all back manually. The reason it does this is because your only suposed to sync with only one iTunes Library, so transfer any purchases to your old iTunes first. Then make a backup of your iPod files, just in case anything happens to your new library as the old library would probably be rendered useless.
    I hope this helps!

  • How do I transfer my photoshop to a new laptop with no disc drive?

I need to transfer my CS6 upgrade and, I assume, my original CS5 Windows versions of Photoshop to my new laptop that has no disc drive. This feature takeaway is increasingly common in new laptops, so I thought this would be an easy search, but I got nothing. Anyone out there know a practical way that doesn't involve ripping a disc? If ripping a disc is my only option, then what is the easiest and cheapest way to do that?

I find it hard to believe that your new laptop has no disk drive.  I can not believe it boots off some network device.   It is quit normal to download or copy Photoshop installation files to a Laptops internal hard disk or ssd using an external DVD or network shared.  Then install Photoshop from the copied or downloaded installation files.  I haven't installed Photoshop from CD or DVD in many years. Normally you do not need to copy prior versions of Photoshop to do an upgrade. You will need to be able to enter your upgrade eligible version of Photoshop serial number.
I think the idea of network computers without disk drives went out vogue many years ago it was a concept that never took off.

  • How do i transfer my iweb content to new laptop?

my hard drive on a mac book died - RIP. how do i download the content from my iweb account to my new laptop? the store clerk said that it was possible but doesn't seem obvious to me. i REALLY don't want to lose all my blog site content!

    Hi Old Toad,
A really good way to make a backup of the domain file I found it out ALL BY MYSELF (not exactly...)
I tried out varkgirls Automator which actually makes a .zip file of the domain file and puts in a location of your choice... My 500MB site got 430MB in zip...
I didn't get the point of that automator I mean: I can just drag & drop my domain file to my external HD and it would be the same... So I didn't really like it, I'm sorry for that...
BUT Varkgirl also mentions the Mozy stuff... 2GB of free online storage for backup and, at the moment, I really Love her for mentioning that...
I made a backup of my domain file through Mozy (without zipping and so on) now what's the point? The point is I saved 430MB of storage and got additional 1570MB and best part yet to come: when I modify the Domain.sites2 in iWeb and make it backing up again it turns out that Mozy is so intelligent that it finds the pages I modified and uploads only those to Mozy, I don't have to backup the whole 500Megs every time, isn't that great? It's fantastic! Oh yeah and you can tell Mozy to automatically backup every day or once a week or manually backup.
AND "one more thing" (like Jobs said once in a Keynozte pres. I think it was the one he first mentioned the iPhone => big surprise) I MAYBE (I'm NOT sure) could also edit it by restoring it on another computer (of that I'm sure) and then put it back (of that I'm not sure, I think it would need to upload the whole 500MB file)
Well... For people with .Mac that's not quite a revolution, but for those whom, like me, don't have it it is... I think...
I hope someone understood what I meant...
    Regards,
    Cédric

  • How can I transfer from iPod (16GB) to new computer (Windows 7) without erasing iPod?

My old computer (Windows 7) died and I have a new computer (Windows 7). I had my iTunes library backed up, but I can't get it to work on my new computer. Is there a way to transfer what is on my iPod Touch (16 gb) to my new computer without losing it on the iPod?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Not with iSync, that's for sure. You should post your question in an appropriate iTunes forum here:

  • New iPhone, Old iPod- How do I transfer the iPod to a new user?

I recently bought the iPhone 3GS. When plugged in to my computer, it synced right up with iTunes. My old iPod also works great with it. But now my husband wants my iPod and his own account. How can we open him an account with iTunes for the old iPod without losing all that is already on it? I can't find anything on transferring ownership.

What kind of iPod do you have?
If it's an iPod touch, only data from one iTunes account can be synced to it. If it's a nano or a classic, you can sync data from multiple accounts fairly easily.
    Let me know!

    Any help?

I have shared this thread with a number of users who have reported success with these steps.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3305461
This was posted for an iPad but it works the same way for an iPod. Important - and this has been covered - turn off auto sync in iTunes first, transfer your purchases next, back up your iPod after that.
It is all covered in this thread - Demo & King Penguin
