How do I transfer audio?

I have a few valuable 'family history' recordings on audio tape. Is there any way that I can transfer and burn these to a disc, using my laptop? I recall that I did something similar several years ago, using my desktop. All constructive suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you. PC49

Thank you for that. Unfortunately, I tried both of your clips but they were tagged as locked. Anyway, I did use Audacity, after reading your comments about the Microsoft one. Even though I used the microphone socket for the transfer, I had much better quality recording than before. It helped that I had a better indication of the sound levels, so didn't over-egg it. I have ordered one of the transfer devices by Griffin, so that can use the USB port and, hopefully, improve quality even further. I'll keep you informed of progress.

  • How does Airplay transfer audio file format to an Airport Express?

    Hi, everyone
How does Airplay transfer audio file format to an Airport Express?
Many from the Internet claim that iTunes encodes an AIFF file format into an Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) file format before sending signal to an Airport Express.
    Is that true?
If so, would it still make sense for me to have AIFF files on my music server
or should I have ALAC files instead?
    Please advise.
    Thank you.
    BR,
    George Lien

Many from the Internet claim that iTunes encodes an AIFF file format into an Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) file format before sending signal to an Airport Express.
    Is that true?
Yes. The AirPort Express Base Station (AX) works only with iTunes v4.6+ and is limited to music files that iTunes can read; ie, 16-bit data only. These data, though, can be in any file format that iTunes recognizes, from lossy MP3s at the low-quality end of the spectrum to Apple Lossless and lossless AIFF or WAV files at the high end. It is also important to note that the AX functions only at a 44.1kHz sample rate. When you play 32kHz or 48kHz data, iTunes sample-rate-converts the data in real time before sending it to the AX.
iTunes uses a QuickTime CODEC to convert audio files to Apple Lossless, and then, uses AirPlay to send them to the AX. In turn, the AX uses built-in software that converts the Apple Lossless to an Encoded Digital Audio format. From there, digital audio is sent to a optical transceiver to convert the electrical signal to an optical one before sending it to the innermost part of the audio port. For analog, the AX has a built-in DAC to convert the Encoded Digital Audio to Analog which is sent to the same audio port.
If so, would it still make sense for me to have AIFF files on my music server
or should I have ALAC files instead?
If you have audio files in both formats, I would elect just to keep the ALAC (.m4a) files on the music server.

You could try GarageBand, Audacity, Amadeus, or Logic.
    https://www.apple.com/mac/garageband/
    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
    http://www.hairersoft.com/pro.htm
    https://www.apple.com/logic-pro/
GarageBand may be free depending on your Mac.
Audacity is free; Amadeus is not; Logic is probably overkill for your purposes.
I would suggest Audacity or Amadeus.
The tricky part is getting the app to "see" the audio input from the USB audio adapter. There may be a driver or some other software which comes with the audio adapter from the adapter manufacturer, and the driver may or may not work. In general you should avoid the software from the adapter manufacturer as much as possible. Often a third party USB audio adapter will work better without the manufacturer's software, so try that first- just plug it into your mac, hook it up to your cassette player, and see if it works. You will probably have to select the audio input and output parameters in System Preferences ➞ Sound ➞ Output and Input, and probably the audio input and output in the recording app. If the adapter doesn't "plug and play", you may need a driver for it from the adapter manufacturer, and the driver that came with the adapter may not fit the bill; you may have to look online at the manufacturer's website for an updated driver.  Sometimes you may also need to look at the settings in Applications ➞ Utilities ➞ Audio Midi Setup to get the input and output to work correctly.

  • How Do I Transfer audio recordings from my iPhone?  They won't sync, I can't find them in Internet Explorer, and I can't find them in iPhone Explorer

I can't get audio recordings from my phone.
Why are Apples software developers such idiots?  Can their software ever come up to par with their design and marketing???  This is McDonalds all over again- no the best hamburgers don't sell the best and neither do the best phones, at least not in America.
Someone prove my wrong by showing me how to get these extremely important audio recordings off of my iPhone and onto a usable format.  The recordings are up to an hour long and I've already tried reinstalling my iTunes software, they aren't even visible in Windows Explorer, or iPhone Explorer software... but when I turn on my stupid phone they are there - I have restored my phone from backup and reset my phone and this just astoundes me yet another feature that a 7 year old could require in a software design eludes inclusion- "If people may spend hours and hours recording meetings and important conversations should we make it simple to move audio files recorded with the audio recording app included with every phone to computers so that they can save them to computers, CDs and share and send them others?" ...."YES!!!"  .  Why is Apple so against open source control of these phones and especially an audio download platform? Money- so they can profit off of every song played on these stupid phones.  Great job Steve!  Way to force users of your products to become leemings in your plot to control the online music community profits.  Way to put your greed before your customers.  This too will fail.  Consumers always get what they want in the end- enjoy the profits off of online music purchases while they last... in the meantime at least consider puttings some money into hiring some programmers from Nokia to fix your stupid syncing code and terrible iPhone interface.

instead of writing such an essay, you could have explained better what you tried to do to get them.

  • HT1152 Can I transfer audio tapes to my computer

how do I transfer audio cassette tape to my Apple?

You will need to connect the audio output jacks on the cassette deck (usually RCA) to the audio input port of your MAC.
You also will need the appropriate third party software to convert the analog output to digital.  I used Spin Doctor several years ago with mixed success. Look for alternatives.
    Ciao.
