You haven't understood me. Follow these steps:
1. Log in the user where are the files you want to transfer, and open a Finder window.
2. In Finder, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type /Users/Shared. Now you're on Shared folder, so leave that window.
3. Open a new Finder window without closing the old one, go to the folder with the files you want to transfer, and copy them to Shared folder.
4. After copying the files to Shared folder, go to  > Log Out, and log in the other user.
5. Repeat the step 2, and you will get access to the transferred files. Now, you can open them directly from this folder, or you can copy them to a folder on your user folder

Recently, i was surprised with a brand spanking new 15.4" 2.2 GHZ intel core 2 macbook pro. before this awesome new notebook, i was using a very old, arthritic windows 98SE OS and everything in my whole computing life is stored on that old win98SE antique! i would like to know how i can transfer all my music, movies, pictures and applications, including windows 98se itself so i can possibly run them using parallels or bootcamp (ie: my paintshop pro 7 & 9, animation shop, icewindale games, plus other windows based programs i already have.) i have a male to b male usb cable, if that might help me transfer, i do not know. i also have many many cd-r's, if is this the only way to transfer my files, i am going to be burning disks forever & ever! :P can anyone help me out and suggest a way i can have all my stuff on this awesome new macbook pro? Since its running 98se, i'd say it would have USB 1.1.. which is slow. so if you have a spare ethernet cable which i think is a lot faster than USB, you can set up a network via ethernet and send to the mac that way. If you turn all your sharing preferences on windows 98 (i forgot how to, because its such a long time since i used it) you can access every folder from your mac. But yeah there isnt a lot of ways to transfer quickly on something that old.

I purchased a new Macbook Pro to replace a 5 year old Macbook. The 5 year old Macbook has Firewire 400, USB and Ethernet ports as well as WIFI and runs OSX 10.7.5. The new Macbook Pro has USB 3, Thunderbolt, and HDMI ports as well as WIFI. I started the transfer process with migration assistant using Ethernet cable from the older Macbook and WIFI on the new Macbook Pro. I also connected a USB3 cable to the two computers for good measure, but migration-assistant only gave me the option of using Ethernet. The 2 computers did sync and after 30 minutes the screen said it would take 30 hours plus, and after 3 hours it was up to 310 hours. I am hoping that there is a simpler and faster way. Thank you in advance for any assistance anyone can provide.

You can get a thunderbolt to firewire adapter. You can then get a firewire 400 to 800 cable and put the old computer in target mode. Then you can follow these instructions.

Ideally you would have backed all youe important data from your old computer ready to transfer to the new one, or run both in parallel until you were happy you didn't need the old one any more.
I'm guessing these options are no longer available.
Normally your user profile contains a Music folder which in turn holds the iTunes folder. All the important details of your library are in there, with the media below in a folder called iTunes Media. If you lose this information and then connect your device to an empty iTunes library it will want to clean it out the device and start over.
You should be able to recover the media with the tips in this post from forum regular Zevoneer but I'm not sure what the implications are for your application settings. You can probably transfer your purchases into a newly authorised library, backup the device, recover any other media using third party tools, then restore the device from the backup. That should switch the assocation of the device to the new machine but I couldn't say for sure not having personally tested the process.

I need to transfer my stuff from an iMac to a MacBook Pro, both not new. I don't have the original install discs for the iMac. Id like to be able to keep software etc on the iMac to transfer to a family member but I dont want any of my personal information to remain.
Likewise I want to put my stuff onto the MacBook and transfer their stuff to the iMac, is it doable with a firewire cable and if so are there step by step instructions for an operator with a very small understanding!

From Contacts, anyway (the new version of Address Book) you can export to a .abbu file and import then into Outlook. I'm not sure about Mail as I only really use Outlook...

I have a Firewire cable and Thunderbolt adapter, but no icons showing either Mac appear on either desktop.

The fastest way is to use Carbon Copy Cloner and a external drive formatted GUID OS X Ext. J in Disk Utlilty, then connecting to the new Mac and using Migration Assistant in the Utilites folder.
Even faster, if you can determine your going to replace all the apps from fresh sources anyway (like if the older Mac's OS X verison is old thus the apps) then just use a external drive and copy just your files to it, then connect to the new Mac and transfer over.
Some apps you can just grab the registration code and install it fresh on the new machine with the old code, talk to the developer about transfering the program, as long as it's deleted on the older Mac in the process.
It used to be Firewire Target disk mode was fastest, but since Thunderbolt came out...
