How do I transfer files form a time machine backup disk to a time capsule disk to retain older backup data?

I have just purchased a Time capsule and wish to transfer old backups to the new system, but the disk image does not appear except during backups and even then will not allow backup files to be copied across from the old Backups.backupdb to the new one as was possible before.
Any ideas?

Backups are stored differently on a drive that is connected directly to a Mac compared to a network drive like the Time Capsule. Things can get real complicated depending on exactly what you are trying to do.

That depends on what kind of files you're talking about.
If you mean photos, then you can just plug the phone in and it will appear like any other camera, mounting the camera roll like a flash drive or SD card.

  • How can i get files from my time capsule to my new mac?

    Hello there,
I know this topic i much discussed, but searching has not turned up a solution.
I have a new mac book pro 15 on order and want to grab my files from my time capsule.   My old mac book pro 15 (3 months old) was encrypted with file safe.  In the past i have never had good results with bringing data to a new mac from time capsules; I've tried many times for my self and family.  As a result I use the time capsule for day to day old file retrieval needs and do manual backups of my data onto externals and NAS devices for migration to new computers-tedious but it has yet to fail me.  This time, I did that with everything except a few folders of my movies and pictures.  They are now prisoner on the time capsule.
What is the best way to get files off the time capsule and does it require that my login and user name on the new mac be identical to that which was on my old mac?
(I change my user names each time i get a new mac, not specifically on purpose but i haven't paid attention to what they were when setting up a new computer.)
    any assistance is appreciated.
    Thanks

    Thanks Allan,
Help me understand what question you're referring to.  I've been through several new macs and am not sure what specifically you're speaking about.
My old mac had a partition on the drive that I do not want on the new mac, so I am concerned about doing a full restore and prefer a file by file or folder by folder. is this possible?

  • How do I transfer files from a time machine hard drive to a new MacMini?

My MacBook Pro running 10.5 is slowly dieing. I want to transfer files, photo libraries, iTunes to our new MacMini runing 10.8. When I connect a hard drive to my MacBook Pro, the screen freezes. I think I need to use the Time Machine copy  from the MacBook Pro on an external hard drive to transfer to the new MacMini. Any help or directions to do that?

  • How do I pull files from my Time Capsule after I reinstalled Mac OS X?

I use Time Capsule/Time Machine to back up my files for my Macbook. I have been having problems with my user account so made sure eveything was backed up, reinstalled and selected to delete all files (since it was backed up). Now, how do I retrive my Time Machine files? Do I need to configure Time Machine again? I was able to go into the Time capsule but it only showed today's data. Did I delete all previous Time Machine updates my reinstalling OS X?

iCloud does not provide general file storage in the manner of the late lamented MobileMe iDisk; it only handles syncing of calendars, contacts, bookmarks and photos taken on one device which are shunted onto the others. iWork and TextEdit documents can be shared to other devices by storing on the iCloud server but not other types of files (barring the odd fiddle).
If you want online storage of other types of files you will need to find a third-party alternative. This page examines some options:

  • How can I download files directly to time capsule?

I currently have time capsule 1TB working wirelessly as a backup for my macbook.  I also would like to use it as an external hard drive.  I can not figure out how to do this even after reviewing the questions on the forum.  I have tried to import video through imovies and the time capsule does not show as a drive I can download into.  Any advice?

I also would like to use it as an external hard drive.
Open Macintosh HD and look for the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading on the left side of the window.
If the Time Capsule icon does not appear here, click anywhere on the open desktop so that the Finder menus appear at the top of the screen. Click the Finder menu, then click Preferences. Click the General tab.  Under the heading of "Show these items on the desktop", make sure that there is a check mark next to 'Connected Servers"
Click on the Time Capsule icon on the left side of the window
Double click the folder that appears on the right side of the window
This will mount the Time Capsule disk icon on the desktop
You can drag/drop, copy/paste to this disk
It is generally a good idea to reserve the Time Capsule disk for Time Machine backups as much as possible, as sooner or later there will be a battle for space on the drive.

  • How do you retrieve files from a Time Capsule backup that was made by a computer you no longer have?

I have a Time Capsule that has backed up five computers over the last six years.  Four of those computers I no longer have or the drives are not working.  I want to retrieve some old pictures from these backups. They are stored in large ".sparsebundle" files.

The first choice that you should consider is to use Migration Assistant on your Mac.
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant
The last choice would be to try the steps below that work for me......but there is no guarantee that they will work for you. Also, please be aware that there is always a chance that the backups for the Macs that you still have might be damaged in the process if things go wrong.
Proceed at your own risk. The advice mentioned below is worth about as much as you paid to visit this web page.
    If you wish to continue......
Pick one sparsebundle file from an "old" Mac and double click on it to see if that will mount the drive icon on the Mac computer that you have there. This will be a white "disk" icon, likely named Time Machine Backups, similar to the illustration below:
You may be asked for a password when you double click on the sparsebundle file. That might be the Time Capsule disk password, or it might also be the administrator password for the "old" Mac.
If you have made it this far, please report on your progress.

Just drag them there. Note that anything you want to keep shouldn't be stored on only one drive, as it might fail at any time.

  • How can I transfer files from my laptop to my time machine?

I am running out of disk space on my Macbook Air and would like to know if it is possible to transfer, not back up files to my 3TB Time Capsule.  If so, how?

While it is possible to do this by simply dragging files to the Time Capsule using the Finder, keep in mind that the only copies of your important files that you transfer will be on the Time Capsule.
When....not if....the Time Capsule drive has a problem, you lose these files, since you have no other copies of them.
Much better to attach a hard drive to the Mac and move files there.
Then, Time Machine will backup both your Mac and the attached hard drive. That way, you have "original" copies on one hard drive or location and your "backups" on another.
In other words, Apple designed the Time Capsule and Time Machine for your backups....not "original" or "master" files.

  • How do i transfer files from my external HD to time capsule?

    Hi Everyone,
I've been reading thru the discussions and yet to find a clear answer on how to transfer files from my external HD to time capsule. I am fairly new to Mac computers, pc user for years, but just bought a new MacBook Pro and the 500g time capsule.
I plan on using the Time Capsule as a back-up and external harddrive to store all of my music so not to overload my laptop.
Also, i have a pc formatted ipod, which i will have to re-format for my MacBook so I don't mind creating a new library in itunes but is it difficult to point the library to the music file on the Time Capsule? And will it work?
Thanks a bunch for any info!

nnigel, Welcome to the discussion area!
I've been reading thru the discussions and yet to find a clear answer on how to transfer files from my external HD to time capsule.
If it is directly connected to your Mac via USB or FireWire, Time Machine will include it in the backup.
