How do I transfer files from an old macbook to the new air?

I just received a new macbook air...I am stumped on how to transfer files and more specifically on how to get the Microsoft office for mac onto the harddrive since there is no cd drive!

First, the transfer of files from another computer is best done through Setup Assistant.
User Pondini has some great comprehensive pages on the very subject right here;
http://pondini.org/OSX/Setup.html
On installing Microsoft Office for the Mac on your unit, the best way is to download the trial of MS Office from Microsoft's website, and then use your disk set's activation code to activate the trial to a registered full version. This way, no DVD reader is needed.
Alternatively, you can use Remote Disk to share a DVD reader from another computer. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1777
Or you can purchase an external Superdrive from Apple. Many other external USB DVD units will also work.

If you can get both computers on the Internet at the same time without re-cabling, you have the connection infrastructure needed to enable file sharing and share those files.
That said, many users find it easier to use FireWire Target Disk mode to treat the old computer as a big Hard drive, and just drag and drop the files, or use Migration Assistant or Setup Assistent.
There is a really good guide here:

I've used Migration Assistant in the past and it's working like a champ. You either want to connect your MBPs using a Firewire cable or have them connected to the same router with Ethernet cabling. Don't attempt a wifi transfer - it could take a whole day.
Both links provided are good - they both point to various ways to transfer data. I just prefer MA.

Everything you need to know, right here. Make sure you read through it BEFORE you turn on the new Mac for the first time. This is because the preferred means is using Setup Assistant, which is only available form the first boot.

You can copy the iWeb application from the desktop machine to your new MBA.  But if it's iWeb 2 it won't work with Mavericks or Mt. Lion. Also  copy the Domain.sites file from the desktop to your MBA as that's the file with your webstite files in it.
    Happy New Year

  • I've just updated my imac 21.5. how do i transfer files from my old imac to my new imac?

    Help!
I've had an iMac 21.5 for approximately 3.5 years.
I have Aperture 3 (with loads photos) and iTunes etc on my current iMac.
I have just bought a new 21.5 iMac with all the latest upgrades etc.
As of yet I have not even taken the new iMac out of the box.
    How do I:
    1. prepare the old iMac to get ready to transfer files
    2. actually transfer the files!
    Also!
Once everything is transferred how do I make my iMac "safe" to sell? I don't want old personal data left on there for someone to have a good old snoop!
My original iMac was not supplied with any operating discs etc. It was all set up and ready to go.
    Thanks.

Regarding the old iMac.  Just delete your USER NAME from the Control Panel.  Go into System Preferences - then User/Groups and delete your account from there.
Just a bit of advice though before you do all this, go and buy yourself a remote Hard Drive, they're really good value today and copy off all of your sacred files from your old computer onto the new drive.  You could also do the same via the Backup.app
It's well worth doing....    You can easily delay the switch over for a few days and you'll then have a backup disc that you'll start to use again and again.

  • How do you transfer photos from an old iPhone to the new one??

How do you transfer photos from an old iPhone to your new one??

Photos in your camera roll are included in the iPhone backup, & restoring your new phone from the backup of your old phone, as described here, will restore these photos to your new phone:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109
Photos synced to your phone are not included in any iPhone backup. If you're talking about photos that were synced to your old phone, just sync them to your new phone.

  • How do I transfer files from my old MacBook Pro to my New MacBook Pro?

I am trying to transfer some files, not all, from my old MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Pro. I have tried to use Migration Assistant, but it doesn't let me choose what I want to transfer (only generic things like "users" and "files and folders"). I have tried to use Firewire. Now here is the funny thing. When I put my old mac in target mode it doesn't appear on my new mac anywhere. But, when I put my new mac in target mode, it pops right up on the dashboard and in finder. The problem is I have tried using my new mac as the target and just place the files into the icon, but the don't stay after I eject. I get a prompt that says downloading and when all files and apps are transferred I turn off my new mac then turn it back on and nothing. I've done search after search and repeated this process 3 times and nothing. Am I doing something wrong? Please help.

Time Machine will not "overwrite". New back ups are added to what is there, without erasing.
Connect the Time Machine back up, double click on the icon and navigate through its contents - the back ups are chronological, so you just select the date then go through the contents just like on any other drive. You can select any files you want and drag and drop on the new Mac's desktop (or anywhere else).

  • How do I transfer files from my old PC to my new MAC?

My new iMac arrived on Monday and I successfully downloaded the drivers for printers, etc.  Now I need to move files from my old PC to my iMac.  Is there a faster way of doing it other than copying files to a thumb drive and loading on my Mac?  What about files on my MacBook Pro that need to be moved?  How do I do that?  I'm not really techie so please be detailed about any cables, etc. that I might need to purchase.  Many thanks.

The easiest way is to  put the fiels on an external HD and drag and drop them. Here are some links I'd STRONGLY recommend bookmarking and using immediately.

  • How can I transfer files from an old Mac onto my new one?

As outlined on this thread, I am trying to get data from my 1995 Performa 630 to my recently delivered MacBook Pro.  All suggestions gratefully received.
Also, are ClarisWorks files instantly readable by modern office software, or do I need to save in RTF or some other format, first, on the older machine?

    Hi...
Your new MacBookPro has Mac OS X Lion v10.7.x installed on an Intel processor and cannot open or read ClarisWorks files as such.
However, you may be able to reformat to RTF >  AppleWorks: Document Recovery Techniques
The issue is going to be migrating files since you can't use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac

  • I just bought a new ipod shuffle, how can i transfer music from my old ipod onto the new one

How do I transfer from my old ipod to my new ipod

You can't transfer it directly.  If the old iPod is set to sync to your iTunes library on the computer, everything on the iPod is in your iTunes library.  Just set up the shuffle to sync from your iTunes library as desired.
If the old iPod is set to Manually manage music, AND there are songs on the iPod that are not in your current iTunes library, please post back.

  • How do I transfer files from my current imac to the new one. My old imac is running 10.5.8

    Hello
    I got a new iMac 10.8.2 and also have a iMac 10.5.8 how can I conenct those 2 ?
All I want is to use some of my files on my new one.I don't want to transfer ALL my files, just some, like pictures. But only the once I need. Not all of them.
    I have a FireWire cable,don't work, I have ethernet cable,don't work.
So I must do something wrong If someone could maybe explaint it to me step by step that would be great, since I am not a big Mac (computer) freak.
So basically I would like to use my old iMac as a external drive where I could get my files from and transfer them to my Mountain Lion, iMac.
Also If someone knows, why Mountain Lion always loses internet conections, would be also a very big help! Thank you!
But please, in simple step by step explaining. My english is not the best,my German is much better
Thank you so much already for the help, I really appreciated!

Oh, on the losing Internet, try this...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
PS. Your English is quite good & completely understandable.

  • How do I transfer files from my old computer to my new one?

I just purchased a new Mac Mini. I have an iBook that is about 5 years old. I want to transfer all of my files (including music and photos) to my new computer. How do I do that?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Do you know which version of Mac OS is installed on your iBook? You can find out by choosing "About This Mac" from the Apple menu. Using a FireWire cable with the Migration Assistant (as Dal suggested) will be the best method. But, you'll have to be using Mac OS X 10.1 or newer to transfer all your files automatically.
