How do i transfer files from external hd to new hd in macbook pro

Hi Totally new to upgrading Mac.  I Backed up my hd to a an external hd. Upgraded my hd to 1tb. How do I make the transfer? The new hd does show in disk utility. Do I have to format this hd? Really not sure what to do next. Thanks

Format the new 1TB internal drive 1 partition, Option: GUID, Format: OS X Extended Journaled, give it a name and click Apply.
Then head to Erase and move the slider one notch to the right, then click erase and come back in a few hours.
What this will do is write zero's to the whole hard drive and then it reads it back and if the driver can't read a sector of data, it's mapped off never to be written to again.
This is a lenghtly process, but has the benefit of your precious data being placed on perfectly working magnetic sectors and reduces a lot of issues later on down the road.
Once that is finished, quit Disk Utility and install OS X using your AppleID and password on a reliable, fast, Internet connection (preferably via Ethernet cable)
Once that is done, reboot and setup. If your backup is TimeMachine or bootable clone, then hook that up first and reboot again so Setup Assistant see's it and you can use that to transfer your programs and accounts/files over.
If you want to start brand new, with no contamination of older programs, then install programs fresh first from original sources (best actually) and then manually transfer personal files from backup checking to see what they are.
If the account names are different, then drop the files into the DropBox folder of your new account's Public folder, this way the permissions and whatnot will change.
When you use Migration or Setup Assistant, it copies all your crap and unwanted history along for the ride.
Some like a clean start on a new machine, leaving sins of the past behind them.

  • How do i transfer files from external harddrive to new mac

Okay I'm getting a new macbook pro with retina display tomorrow, but i currently own a macbook pro. I backed up everything on an external hard drive from the macbook pro. Question is, how do I get all my stuff from the external to the new macbook pro with retina?

Well, I would skip the Firewire since it isn't essential. Connect the backup drive to your new Retina when it arrives, but before you turn it on for the first time. When you then turn it on you will begin in the Setup Assistant where you will have an opportunity to restore your files from a backup drive or another computer. Select the appropriate option. You can then restore (migrate) your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences. Once that is completed when the computer restarts you will be all set up in your old Home folder.
Note that you will be transferring files over a USB connection. Depending upon how much data you are transferring this may take a very long time, so be patient. A USB drive's typical transfer rate is about 12 GBs/hour.

  • How do I transfer files from external hard-drive onto Macbook Pro?

How do I transfer files that were put on my external hard-drive (from my old Macbook Pro) via Time Machine onto my new Macbook Pro?

I've already set up my new MacBook (which is Lion, I think the other mac had the snow lepoard version)...so I guess I'll have to use the Migration Assistant, not the Setup Assistant?  I know if I do that it'll set up a new user account instead of synching it up like I wanted but that's OK.  But when I plugged my external drive into the new mac, it just backed up the mac and didn't give me an option to transfer files.  I guess I'll study this link and see if I can't figure it out...thanks for the link!  If you have any other advice about specifically migration assistant, let me know...

  • How do i transfer files from old ipad to new ipad if it has already been activated as new?

I purchased a new ipad and need to transfer files from my old ipad.  However, it has already been set up as new and all support suggestions I have found have been for choosing the restore option in the set-up stage.  How do I do it now that it has been activated?

It depends on if you even have a backup. If you had a backup, I don't suppose that you would have to ask how to restore from it.
Did you backup your old iPad? If you so, did you backup with iTunes or iCloud? This explains how to backup and how to restore from a backup, but once again, if you don't have that backup any longer, this will not work.

  • Need help- How do I transfer iTunes from external/internal to new computer?

My old computer crashed. I have iTunes on an external drive, but not exported exactly as iTunes suggests in "back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive". I am following the directions from support "Restoring your iTunes library backup". Get all the way to "Choose Library", which I do, and then select iTunes folder. Step 7 says to click "choose". I click on the folder, because i do not have a "choose" button. Nothing happens, it just opens the file. If I connect my ipod it opens and a screen tells me I have to "erase and sync" because my ipod is synced with another library. Do I erase and sync? I'm scared of losing hours of music I copied from CD's. (I was able to transfer purchased music.) I have downloaded iTunes 9.0 on my new computer.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  • How to best transfer files from G3 B&W rev2 to my mac pro

    Hi,
My souped up yet tired G3 went a little nutty(unresponsive) so i finally upgraded to the macpro. i have a few questions to ask:
    1. how do i go about transfering my files (docs, movies and pics) from the G3 to my macpro? i have read a few options but i wanted to get some input.
    2. can i install the PATA 30gb 7200rpm seagate drive in my G3 to the optical bay in the macpro?
    thanks

You're right. You can't use migration assistant as, although your B&W has a firewire port, it doesn't support firewire target disk mode.
You probably can remove your PATA drive from the G3 and connect it to the ATA bus serving the superdrive. Set the jumper to "cable select" and you ought to be able to use migration assistant. I'd only transfer files and settings, though. No applications.

  • How do I transfer files from time machine to new mac?

I have owned my own imac since 2009, we have recently inherited a newer imac from a family member and I would like to transfer all of my files from my time machine to the new imac. How do I erase the files currently on this "new" imac, and then transfer my files from my time machine?

What version of OS X does the new iMac have installed. Do you know exactly which model it is?

  • How do i transfer files from time capsule to new computer?

I recently lost my vintage Imac hard drive and to top it off, likely had a faulty OS. Good news is I have a time capsule, bad news is it is also suspected to have the faulty OS. The Imac is history and I currently have a macbook pro with Lion OS installed and now I want to retrieve all my files off the time capsule. I was told to simply "drag and drop" the files from time capsule to my new macbook. apparantly not so simple. I see the the drive in finder and a lonely folder which I am seemingly unable to do anything with. any suggestions?

Drag and drop is not the way to go. Run Migration Assistant, found in your Applications/Utilities folder on the Macbook Pro. Follow prompts to recover information from a Time Machine backup, and point it to the Time Capsule.
Note that the recovery will recreate your old user from the iMac. You will have already set up a user on the MBP, but the files will not go into your new user - they'll go into your old user. Once you log out, you'll see your old user appear as a login option.

  • How do I move files from a portable hard drive to my MacBook Pro?

Hope someone can help with this. I recently got myself a MacBook Pro and I'm having problems transferring files from my old Windows XP based laptop. I downloaded the Windows Migration Assistant onto my old laptop but everytime I tried to run it I got various error messages telling me I needed to upgrade this and that. Now the laptop has decided to give in totally and won't switch on at all! I do have all my music etc backed up onto an external hard drive but when I connect it to my MacBook it just doesn't want to know, I assume as all the data on there is formatted as Windows. Has anyone got any tips about what I can do if anything next? Thanks

You should be able to read the external drive. Go to Finder and see if your external drive appears in "Devices". If it appears, press it and migrate the files you want
Thank you so much for your advice, I was panicking there for a moment thinking that I'd have to start from scratch! You are an absolutr STAR!

  • HT1752 how to transfer files from G4 (OS 10.4.11) to macbook pro

Hi there! Needing help with the above. Have tried migration asssitant but it appears I can't get the required software upgrade for the old g4 so the macbook isn't able to connect to it. Is there a quick and easy way to transfer document and photo files? Thanks for your suggestions.

Connect via firewire cable each other and boot up G4 as target disk mode(start with hod down the "T" key until firewire icon appear on the screen) to be ordinary "external drive". Then copy the file you need.
When you finished, safely eject the target Mac as if it’s any other disk and push 4G's power button to shutdown.

How can I transfer files from one external HD (WD My Passport 2T) to another external HD (Seagate Backup Plus 2T)?  WD drive was improperly ejected (although we did tell it to eject) and now Finder no longer recognizes it.   Using MacBook Pro and I just upgraded to Yosemite before this happened. Was told at Apple Store to use Disk Utility to repartition, but it failed.  It says to backup files and restore.  But how do I backup files?  Or would appreciate any other suggestions to repair drive.

You may drag & drop between external hds.
    Should you run into trouble.
Take the exernal drive appart.  Take out the harddrive.  Try reading the data via a usb adapter. Put a household finan on the hd.
