How do I transfer iPhone content back to laptop after hard disk crash

My old hard disk crashed a week ago. How do I transfer all my iPhone content (music, apps, podcasts, ...) back to my laptop after having a new hard disk installed?

I do have all the backups, but this means that I'd have to individually look up each App, then download it again. Isnt there a simpler way? Doesnt Apple keep an index of some sort of all the items I have purchased, so that a one-click procedure may restore the latest versions of all of them with ease?
A few years ago I adopted the strategy to keep everything on the web. With now over 20 GB on the web, it just doesnt make sense to do this any more. After the mess up with my hard disk, as far as my documents go, every time I edit any of them, I simply back them up individually onto 2 separate external drives, and burn them on CDs once a week. Having had 4 major hard disk crashes since 1989, I dont really trust automated backup programs any more. I'm much happier if I know where EXACTLY my documents are at any point in time.

How can I transfer DVD content back to the original iMovie program, (iMovie 6)  or whatever? Thanks. I need to redo the movie, but have lost the original movie files which I did in iMovie 6.

Handbrake (free) can recover from the DVD into an editable file you can use in iMovie.

  • HT202853 I have many project made in move HD that are not updating to the new iMovie 10 on my new iMac.  Why is this not working as stated?  How do I get my projects back from backup after old iMac crashed?

I have many projects made in imovie HD that are not updating to iMovie 10 on my new iMac.  Why is this not working as stated on the article HT202853?  How do I get my projects back from backup after old iMac crashed?

    According to:
Update projects and events from previous versions of iMovie in iMovie (2014) - Apple Support
you can update from iMovie versions 7, 8 and 9, but iMovie HD is iMovie 6.
Maybe you can update in two steps, first from iMovie 6 to iMovie 7, 8 or 9 then to iMovie 10.

  • After Hard Disk Crash...Upgraded to iOS4. Backed Up before...result?

    Fact:
    1) Hard disk crashed
    2) Replaced with a new and bigger drive
    3) Installed iTunes
    4) Connected my iPod Touch, clicked on Cancel on "Synced to another library...OK to erase message".
    5) iTunes suggested upgrade to iOS4
    6) Clicked OK on backup before upgrading
    7) Upgrade result: OK
    8) Selected Restore from Backup
    9) All Apps OK, empty content. No music, no playlists, no movies, no podcasts.
Guess my mistake was, trusting that the backup before upgrading would work flawlessly. I do have a backup on an external hard drive, but is kind of old and is missing several iTunes purchased songs as well as movies.
Like many others, I had to try several times to get the backup/upgrade to work. When I click on "Restore from Backup" it gives me the option of Restoring from my iPod's name (you know the results) and one "unknown" backup. Should I try that one, just in case it has my library? Where can I look for that file in Windows? By the size, I'll know if that is the one that contains all my data.

What backup does is save your settings on your touch, not your Library. So I guess that was a basic misunderstanding on your part.
Backing up your Library would have been a good idea before you installed the new hard drive, but you do have the slightly older one available to you. You can transfer that library to your current hard drive, tell iTunes that the computer is authorized (new hard drive or OS install is perceived as a new computer) and synch your content back on. Applications you may have lost can be downloaded again at no charge. Sometimes the iTunes people will allow you to redownload lost music and videos.

  • After hard  disk crash: How can I get my fotos from iPod to hard disk?

As I said my hard disk crashed. (iPod 3.gen. )
So now I have my photos only on the iPod but I can't get them on my hard disk.
(If I would sync my iPod they would be deleted...)
Do you have/know a good programme (free), that copies them back on the hard disk??
    Thanks a lot

f you have full resolution copies of the photos on the iPod have a look here, it's completely free: Apple Knowledge Base article - Use Disk Mode to copy photos from iPod
If not, there are a few programs out there for recovering photos from an iPod, have a look at the ones below. I don't know of any "free" ones but if your photos are of value to you then paying for a program makes perfect sense. If you search the internet you can find more. Just be aware that what you'll be recovering will be photos optimised for the iPod so they won't be the same quality as the original full resolution versions:
    iPodPhotoCopy Windows only
    CopyPodPhoto Windows only
Tansee iPod Transfer Photo Windows only
iPod Photo Liberator Mac & Windows

  • How to reimport music in IPOD back to ITUNES after computer has crashed?

i know this question has been asked before, and i have followed the instructions 'macmuse' posted. however, when i plug my ipod into the USB port, my computer does not recognize it as an IPOD it only shows up as an external drive. when i click on it, my computer asks me if i want to reformat the IPOD so that it can recognize it. has anyone else had this problem? i don't know how else to get my songs back on my computer if my computer cannot recognize/work with the IPOD when i plug it in. i have downloaded all necessary programs on my computer, and the IPOD is brand new - perhaps the old way of reimporting music no longer works? please help, i'd so appreciate any input!

A search on google will probably find utiltities that can be used to copy music off an iPod and onto a computer - after you've done it you then just need to do File > Add Folder to Library in iTunes (but I would advise maintaining a backup on an external drive from now on). This fairly old thread mentions some utilities that were around at the time the message was written http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9990366#9990366
In terms of getting notifications, if you go into 'My Subscriptions' on the right you should get options to 'Always subscribe to topics I create' and 'Always subscribe to topics I reply to' - selecting the first should get what you want (though I've never tried it).

  • Any way to get music from ipod back into library after hard drive crash?

I just survived and am recovering from a hard drive crash. For some reason, on my backup, I only retained about 500 of my 2500 songs in my library. All of my music is intact on the ipod however. Is there any way at all to resolve this issue and get the music from the ipod into the libary, or in the alternative, any way to back up the stuff on the ipod? Thanks.

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible - Windows version only)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Retrieving content for iTunes library after hard drive crash

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's encountered this situation, but i couldn't find a decent answer anywhere. My HDD crashed, but i recovered all my documents, together with all iTunes documented files (including songs). I didn't lose any data. The problem is that iTunes can't just read copy pasted files (to avoid the spread of bought iTunes songs/apps). How can i get all those songs back in there?
    1) I've still got everything on my iPod, but my iPod won't even be recognised with the name i've given it. Synchronising my iPod is out of the question...
    2) I've got screenshots of files i found in the back-up document files
    http://s720.photobucket.com/albums/ww201/Ollii/Computer%20Info%20Screens/
    3) I can upload every song back again, but that takes ages. And I would like to have my apps back too
    Thank you in advance

I built a new computer and I copied and pasted the entire itunes file that was in my music for XP to the music file in win 7. After it was done I downloaded itunes agreed to all the fun stuff and it found everything when i opened it. To play the purchased music I need to sign in to my account. After that everything worked great with no problems and it was like it never moved. As for your apps I still live in the stone age with an 80G ipod and an apple TV. So good luck with that but I do not see a problem with that as well. For any purchase from apple you have a total of 5 computers to use with you account. So I hope you were able to unauth. the old hard drive. If not you have to rest you count which can only be done 1X a year.

  • How to Retore Music and iTunes Library backup after Hard Disk Crash?

My Windows Vista is not booting and HP recommends I should go back to factory setting, which means I will have to create new Windows user profile etc. I have a complete backup of Music folder, iTunes folder, iTunes library files etc.
    1. What should I do to ensure that my iTunes works with all rating, playcount, played dates etc. intact?
    2. Would my purchased content - e.g. iPod Touch apps work fine, if copied to the same directory?

+I have a complete backup of Music folder, iTunes folder, iTunes library files etc.+
That's good! You've backed up the metadata, since its stored in the itunes folder. It's in a file named
    iTunes Library.itl
Get your PC repaired, install itunes, restore the backup files, and everything should work.
Here is a good article from iLounge that discusses itunes content vs itunes library. You are pretty much moving your library to a new PC, at this point.

  • How do I restore old emails from recovered data after hard drive crash?

Hi all - I used data rescue II to recover data from a crashed hard drive - seems to have worked pretty well, as the file structure seems to be mostly intact - now I'm trying to find the old emails and get them back in my inbox/sent mailboxes where they belong - any help is surely appreciated - thanks

    Hi Tommybanjo.
Mail stores the messages in .emlx files, but you cannot import individual messages directly, only entire mailboxes. In order to import the recovered .emlx files back into Mail, they must be organized as if they were in an .mbox mailbox, i.e. they must be in a Messages folder within an .mbox folder. You may create a folder called Recovered.mbox, then a Messages folder within this folder, then put the .emlx files within the Messages folder, then import that.
In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions. Note that Mail wants you to select the folder that contains the mailboxes to be imported (i.e. the folder where the .mbox folders to be imported reside), not the .mbox folders themselves nor the Messages folders within them.
Given the circumstances, however, there could be something wrong with one or more of the recovered messages and that might cause the import to fail. If that’s the case, you may try organizing the recovered messages in several smaller mailboxes and try to identify the messages that Mail has trouble with. Alternatively, you may try using emlx to mbox Converter or Emailchemy to convert the .emlx files to standard mbox format, then import that in Mail as Other.

  • How do I reinstall iWork on Macbook mid-2007 after hard drive crash? Don't seem to have a disc so must have downloaded it.

    Hi
The hard drive on my mid-2007 Macbook crashed. I've installed a new one but don't have a disc for iWork, which I must have downloaded. I can't see a version on the Apple store that looks compatible and I'm not even sure what version I had. I'm using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and it looks like version 09 won't work. Would 08 be OK? I'm assuming I'll have to buy a replacement as I don't have a record of the serial number. Would be great if I don't.
    Thanks

  • Problems Copying Time Machine Back-Up to New Hard Disk

I tried copying my old time machine back-ups from a 500 GB WD HDD to a new Seagate 1TB. Followed the instructions from "Time Machine: How to transfer backups from the current backup drive to a new backup drive". Although terribly slow it seemed to work all well initially. Had it run over night, then discovered the next morning the process was apparently hanging.
Thinking that maybe the energy saver options were the cause of the problem, I unchecked "put hard disk to sleep when possible". So went through the same painful process. Cannot believe that after about 7 h of transfering the whole thing is stuck again:
More than 2 million items were apparently copied, now nothing is happening at all... (neither GB nor minutes changing anymore)
    1) Is this a common problem? More importantly: how can it be solved?
    2) Is there another way to transfer time machine back-ups to another hard disk?
    Thanks!

This is getting (more) annoying: turned out that something went wrong with the 500 GB HDD with the original time machine back-up. Managed to repair it in the 3rd attempt with disk utility. Heard of SuperDuper and thought I'd give it a try.
Cloning the back-up disk to the new 1 TB HDD seemed to work well, but I am a bit surprised with the result:
It seems time machine recognizes now the 1 TB Seagate HDD as a 500 GB (the size of the original WD) only?

  • How do you transfer the content from an iPhone to a PC? I have to use a PC for a while and don't know how to put my stuff on to there from my phone

How do you transfer the content from an iPhone to a PC? I have to use a PC for a while and don't know how to put my stuff on to there from my phone

If you're talking about music and movies an i-device was not designed for unique storage of media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing music and movies is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred from a device to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • How do i transfer my content from my android phone to my new iphone 5

How do i transfer my content from my android phone to my new iphone 5 thanks

sync the old android phone content to google like contacts.  Then sync the new iPhone 5 to google using the carddav protocol.  Google has some great tutorials for seting up the accounts.
    http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2753077
Additional way is if its already on the google.com cloud service. Search iPhone App Store for "MobileTrans contacts".
Or go on iCloud.com then sign up and click on the cogwheel for options. I believe it has import contacts.
