How do I transfer iPhoto from external drive to iMac?

I saved my entire library to an external drive before having to replace my hard drive and now I'd like to transfer them back.

drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the pictures folder and launch iPhoto

  • How do i transfer iphoto from external hard drive?

    I had a macbook, i purchased a macbook pro.
I put my 32K photos and i photo on an external harddrive "Seagate goflex desk 2tb")
This went well, on this external harddrive all files/ photos and events/subfolders are stored perfectly just like original.
    Now...
I want to bring all of the photos and events/subfolders, to my macbook pro from the external harddrive. I have viewed them on my pro, but i have not brought them over.  I have read all the problems, so i want to make sure i do it exactly right when i transfer in, keeping all of the folders etc intack.
Please give me very specific instructions.
    I have MAC OS X 10.7.4
The iphoto is Iphoto 11 Vs. 9.3.2
I appreciate you taking the time!

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • How do i transfer iphoto from Mac laptop to iMac?

We have approx 7000 photos on our G4 powerbook. We have recently bought a brand new iMac OS X 10.5 and want to upload our old photo library to our new.
We backed up our laptop iphoto library to external hard drive in Sept 07. So I connected the ext. hard drive to the iMac and imported via "import to library". I noticed at the time that the photos flashing up on the screen as they uploaded were in a rather random order, but crossed my fingers and hoped. Then I went back to the laptop and updated the hard drive with the photos from Sept 07 onwards and uploaded those to the new iMac too.
My problem is this, the photos in our new iphoto application now seem to be in totally the wrong order, and quite random at that.
How do I fix the problem, does it involved deleting the imac photo library and starting again, or is there another way?
    Thanks

The correct way to move you iPhoto library is to copy it to the pictures folder on your new computer (the new iMac - congradulations!) - not to import it
So if you have the library that you want to move intact then trash the iPhoto library from the pictures folder on your iMac (If you want to be safe drag it to the desktop to save it until you complete the move and test it then trash the desktop copy) and copy the library you want on the iMac to the iP+Mac pictures folder and launch iPhoto - it will open that library, upgrade it as required and you will be set

PS - when you import an old library you will get at least two copies of all photos (the original high resolution and the thumbnail) and for modified photos at third modified copy - not what you want

the only way is Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • How can I transfer Itunes from external hard drive to a new computer?

    Hello,
I had a Dell laptop with Windows XP on it recently crash, but I have everything saved to a Seamagine external 1 terabyte hard drive. I have about 250 gigabytes of media on it, mostly CD's and audiobooks. The setup I had on the XP computer was my Itunes folder saved on the C drive, but I kept all the actual music and audiobooks on the external hard drive, which was labeled the F drive.
After the crash, a relative sold me their three year old Compaq laptop, with Windows 7 instead of XP as the OS. My relative already had Itunes downloaded on it, but when I opened the Itunes on the new (new to me) laptop, Itunes only recognized their (my relative's) account. So, I uninstalled their Itunes and then I re-downloaded Itunes for 64-bit Windows 7. I then opened the Windows Explorer folder so to drag and drop my backed up Itunes folder and library information from the old C drive to the new Itunes folder in the new C drive. But, it wouldn't do anything. It still wanted the password info from my relative's account. It wouldn't recognize my account, even though I had uninstalled and then reinstalled a newer version of Itunes. Dragging and dropping my backed-up Itunes folder from my external hard drive to the new C drive didn't work because it said it didn't have certain permissions or something like that. I think I might have downloaded a newer version of Itunes, different from what I had saved a couple of days ago, which might be one of the problems here, not to mention that I switched OS's from XP to Windows 7.
When I plugged the external hard drive USB into the new laptop no Seamagine manager came up for user-friendly accessibility. I didn't know what to do, so I installed Seagate Dashboard onto the new computer. It didn't do anything for me either. No problem, I thought, I'll just use Windows Explorer to move the Itunes library, and then once I transfer (i.e., drag and drop) the old Itunes folder to the one, all will be as it was. I could then direct my Itunes account to use my external hard drive as the media source folder. I was wrong. It won't let me do that either. It says I don't have permission to do it.
How c an I get my old Itunes library info onto the C drive of this new computer, but keep the 250GB of media files on the external hard drive, just like the setup I had on the old laptop before it crashed? If you can help me, then you will be my hero. I'm scared to death that I've lost my library info and afraid to mess with it too much more for fear of erasing it or, worse, losing the 250 GB of media that is on the external hard drive, which has taken me a tremendous amount of time and money to compile. It is, in effect, irreplaceable. I'm very worried and frustrated. I've been working on this for days, to no avail. You're my last hope. Thank you.

Hmm, I think we should start over...
Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
In the image above the red outline denotes the "media folder", that is the folder listed under Edit > Preferences > Advanced. In the standard layout where the "media folder" is inside the "library folder" the iTunes library has the advantage of being self-contained and portable. Since you've lost the "library folder" from your old computer you're going to have to start over so you might as well get organized properly.
If the folder curently holding your media files is called G:\iTunes then rename it as G:\Media.
The support doc How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one explains how to create a new iTunes library where you want it. In short click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and hold down the shift key. Keep holding until asked to choose or create a library, click Create and browse to G:\, make sure the folder is going to be called iTunes and click save.
Move the folder that actually holds the media inside the folder G:\iTunes\iTunes Media. We're going to let iTunes reorganize everything (unless you have a collection of .wav files in which case stop and tell me because they require a different approach).
Use File > Add folder to library and select the folder G:\iTunes\iTunes Media. iTunes will search through the whole series of subfolders adding all media files into the library and reorganizing them into the correct artist & album folders.
Again, for data security, you really ought to obtain a second external drive at some point and backup your library to it. Only having one copy, as you have found, leaves you vulnerable to failure. External drives are no less prone to it.
    A) Windows uses \ as a folder separator in path descriptions, Mac uses /.
    B) Do you have a backup of the iTunes folder that was on drive C:\ or are you simply referring to the location of your media as a "backup" when it really the only copy? If you have a backup copy of your "original" iTunes library you could move/copy that to G:\iTunes shift-start-iTunes to open it, and then I can offer tools or techniques for fixing the links that will be broken becuase the drive letter has changed.
    C) Use Store > Sign out and then Store > Sign in to sign into your iTunes account. You will also need to use Store > Authorize the computer to allow playback and transfer of any protected content. If your new library contains protected content from any other accounts then you will have to authorize the computer for those too.

  • How do I transfer files from external hard-drive onto Macbook Pro?

How do I transfer files that were put on my external hard-drive (from my old Macbook Pro) via Time Machine onto my new Macbook Pro?

I've already set up my new MacBook (which is Lion, I think the other mac had the snow lepoard version)...so I guess I'll have to use the Migration Assistant, not the Setup Assistant?  I know if I do that it'll set up a new user account instead of synching it up like I wanted but that's OK.  But when I plugged my external drive into the new mac, it just backed up the mac and didn't give me an option to transfer files.  I guess I'll study this link and see if I can't figure it out...thanks for the link!  If you have any other advice about specifically migration assistant, let me know...

  • How do I import ( copy) iPhotos from External Drive that contains the iPhoto library photos.

My old hard drive was failing and with the help of an Apple Consultant, I made a new library ( on external hard drive)  and copied all the photo files off the iMac's internal drive to the external drive. Then the iphoto library was deleted from the hard drive and the internal  hard drive was replaced.
Photo Storage is the name of the external drive as it is designated for photos only. Lightroom recognises the drive but does not see any of the photos. It says no photos available? Is there something I am missing.

Import is just a word for copying photos from the phone to a computer and not that different than what I do in Windows -- although I haven't compared the speed on a large number of photos. If you are importing and using iPhoto, you might try doing it with Image Capture which will allow you to copy them directly to an external drive. It may be faster than doing it to iPhoto but I haven't compared the speed. Instructions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 are shown below.
Connect the iOS device to the computer.
If Image Capture does not open automatically, you can navigate to your Applications folder and open Image Capture from there.
Choose the location to which you'd like to import pictures.
    Click Options.
Click the Options tab if it isn't already selected.
Enable the option "Delete items from camera after downloading".
Note: Deleting photos after importing helps to reduce Camera Roll size, and it improves backup and restore times. You may choose Keep Photos if you wish to import the photos to additional computers.
    Click OK.
    Click Download All.

  • How do you transfer pictures from external hard drive to imac

I am a PC user crossing over to the iMac. I want to move my pic on an external hard drive to the iMac.  Tried clicking and dragging, but didn't take....what gives?

If you can read the external drive then it must be formatted acceptably for the Mac...if you have the pix in one folder, right click the folder, or cntrl-click, copy, then click the folder on the internal drive where you want to copy the pix and right click, or cntrl-click, and paste.  Should work like a PC in that respect.

  • How to get itunes library from external drive to new computer

i recently purchased a new computer w/the windows vista platform. there were posts regarding how to transfer the library w/playlists on this board, which i followed to the point of hitting shift while opening itunes, and choosing a library. however, when selecting such from my external drive, which has the itl and xml on it as well as the itunes music folder, it gives me an error noting it is locked or that i dont have write permission to use it. my external drive on my old computer was the G drive, now it is the F drive on new one. can anyone please advise what to do other than copy all music over and have to completely recreate all playlists?

polydorus, this was the response/post that i found and it was posted by sweepea on 9/4/2007. and all my music is now from the external drive to the itunes music folder on my laptop and it let me keep all my playlists. thank you again for your help!
I had that problem too. I tried to remove iTunes from my computer and then download it again, but that did not make any difference. Then I tried polydorus' answer ("starting iTunes with the shift key held down, when asked to choose a library, navigate to your iTunes folder and choose iTunes Library.itl"), but that did not work either and that same message about the library being locked appeared again.
Then I had a brainwave. I deleted that iTunes library.itl file. (To find it, go to My documents, then My Music, then iTunes, and there is the itunes library file). I now tried to open iTunes by clicking on the iTunes icon on my desktop, nothing happened, as if I had not clicked on it at all. I restored the file from the recycling bin to where it was before. But that also returned me to where I had been before, i.e. I got that locked-library message again. So I deleted that file again. Then I tried right-clicking on the iTunes icon. On the little menu that appeared, I clicked 'Open' and hey presto, suddenly the iTunes set-up assistant appeared and everything went smooth from then on. When I checked, there was a file called iTunes library.itl again and this one worked OK.
By the way, I did not lose any of my music downloads or podcasts when I deleted that file, so it's definitely worth a try.

  • How do i move photos from external drive to iphone

Currently i run on the Mac Pro Retina,
Since this doesn't have much storage i recently moved my entire 40Gb iPhoto onto an external drive. This worked great and love the new storage i have on my mac.
I plug my GoPro into my mac and it imports the photos onto the iPhoto on my external drive.
However the problem occurs when i try get those new photos onto my iPhone, i plug it in and go to photos on my phone in iTunes and it only shows my old iPhoto stuff, so i can't get those new photos across to my iPhone. I've tried the choose file option and chosen external drive but i doesn't seem to work?
And help as to how i can get these photos across would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried to remove the iPod Photo Cache from your iPhoto library? Perhaps it is corrupted.
Try this:    iTunes: Understanding the iPod Photo Cache folder
if removing the cache does not change anything, try repairing your iPhoto library by holding down the key combination option-command ⌥⌘  and launching iPhoto while holding down both keys firmly, until you are seeing the Library First Aid panel. Select the option "Repair Database" and press "Repair".

  • Need help- How do I transfer iTunes from external/internal to new computer?

My old computer crashed. I have iTunes on an external drive, but not exported exactly as iTunes suggests in "back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive". I am following the directions from support "Restoring your iTunes library backup". Get all the way to "Choose Library", which I do, and then select iTunes folder. Step 7 says to click "choose". I click on the folder, because i do not have a "choose" button. Nothing happens, it just opens the file. If I connect my ipod it opens and a screen tells me I have to "erase and sync" because my ipod is synced with another library. Do I erase and sync? I'm scared of losing hours of music I copied from CD's. (I was able to transfer purchased music.) I have downloaded iTunes 9.0 on my new computer.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Well, I would skip the Firewire since it isn't essential. Connect the backup drive to your new Retina when it arrives, but before you turn it on for the first time. When you then turn it on you will begin in the Setup Assistant where you will have an opportunity to restore your files from a backup drive or another computer. Select the appropriate option. You can then restore (migrate) your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences. Once that is completed when the computer restarts you will be all set up in your old Home folder.
Note that you will be transferring files over a USB connection. Depending upon how much data you are transferring this may take a very long time, so be patient. A USB drive's typical transfer rate is about 12 GBs/hour.

  • How do I use Itunes from external drive as main sync for Iphone 4

I apologize if this is obvious but I have searched for quite awhile without finding result.
I currently have my iTunes synced to my Macbook Pro. I purchased a Macbook Air for ease in travel. I would like to move sync of my material on iTunes to my Air as I carry it more with me.
I was told at an Apple Store to purchase a Time Machine and an external hard drive. Both I purchased. I then read for a few hours how to move my itunes to the external drive. The only way I could finally get it to work was to physically connect a USB between the MacBook Pro and the External Drive. Once my Pro recognized the External Drive I dragged my Itunes and watched it copy all the data.
Unfortunately, when I am on the Air I cannot locate within Finder the External Drive. I do see my time Machine but cannot figure out how to get my itunes data from the external drive through the time machine.
    You still with me?
So, can someone help me understand how to go the next step. As I understand from reading this forum I would then go into my Advanced Properties in Itunes (on the Air) and choose to relocate where the iTunes sync occurs. Then I can use my Air for syncing as it wont be dependent on the limited space and once I've changed the properties location for where to find my iTunes data I wont be dependent on the Pro.
PS: Yes I've downloaded all of the newest product software updates (iTunes, iPhone OS, Macs) as of the date this is posed 3/20/2011

    try this:
hold the option key and launch iTunes. at the prompt, click on +choose library+ and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external.
obviously, the external holding your library must be mounted on your desktop for iTunes to find it.
if the drive is connected but doesn't show up on the Air's desktop, go finder > preferences > general and check if +external disks+ is check marked under +show these items on the desktop+.
