how do i transfer iPhotos onto a thumb drive using yosemite.? thank you

If you are referring to the iPhotos Library do the following:
Open Finder and navigate to where your iPhotos Library is, by default it's in the Pictures folder
Control click the iPhotos Library and select Copy
Now navigate to your thumb drive and control click, select Paste item
If you are referring to transfer the actual photos, you will need to export all of them from iPhoto to your thumb drive.

You want to share the Library?
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • How do I transfer iphoto to an external drive?

    Hi Apple support communities,
I know there are plenty of discussions out there but I am still confused.
My start up disk is almost full so I need to transfer my photos into an external drive. I copied iphoto library to my hard drive and deleted all photos in my mac air's iphoto. But when I wanted to test if the transfer was done correctly, I had to relanch iphoto on my mac air ( restoring all photos into my mac air).
So I am now worried that if I just transfer the current most updated iphoto library to my hard drive and empty my mac air's iphoto, in the future i will have new photos in my mac air, but when I want to revisit my older photos from my external hard drive I would have to relaunch the old version of iphoto which will wipe out the newer stuff. What should I do?
    Cheers

I'm not sure I understand you but this is how to move an iPhoto Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
You do not have to move the images back to your computer to view them. Note step 3.

  • How do I transfer iPhoto library to an external drive?

How do I transfer my iPhoto library from my 2006 iMac to an external drive?  My iMac is having issues and I don't want to loose all my photos.
    Thanks!

Drag and drop the IPhoto Library file from your Pictures folder onto the new drive. It will copy by default. Before you delete the original, double-click the library in its new location and iPhoto will launch. Doing it this way tells iPhoto to use this library in future. Make sure it works correctly (and that you have a backup elsewhere, of course) before deleting the original.

  • How do I transfer iPhoto library to an external hard drive?

How do I transfer my iphoto library to an external hard drive. Dragging it does not seem to work.

Erasing the drive won't affect the content of the iPhoto library. If you don't want to reformat that drive, buy another.
Even if you do install software which enables the Mac to write to NTFS drives, the volume containing an iPhoto library needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended.

drag it intact from one drive to the other - be sure both driver are formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and that they both are connected using a high speed wired connection like USB, FireWire or Thunderbolt
Then connect the new drive the the MBA and launch iPhoto on the MBA whild holding down the option key - use the resulting select library window to select the library on the external drive  --  always be positive that the EHD is available prior to launching iPhoto on the MBA

  • How to easily transfer iphoto mediathek to new mac

    Hello,
I have a simple question but have not found answers to this so far, therefore I hope you can help me.
I just have purchased an iMac. On my old Macbook I´ve all my pictures in iPhoto, with folders etc. The transfer has not succeeded so I am searching for a way on how to completely transfer the complete iPhoto pictures and folder structure of my old MacBook to my new iMac.
    Does anybody know?
Thank you so much in advance!

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • How do I transfer iphoto library to external hard drive keeping events intact?

Had a one to one session but forgot how to do this. I would like to transfer my iphoto library to an external hard drive keeping the folders and events intact. I figured out how to send all my photos to the hard drive but they all transfer in single images, if that makes sense, and then i have to go thru all of the 15,000 images by hand and sort them into folders. Ahhhhhhh!
When they showed me how to do this at apple I am able to open my external hard drive and see a folder labled 'iphotolibrary" and  I am able to click it open and then all my events show up just like in iphoto library.
Also does your iphoto library "Trash" take up space on your HD? Forgve me if thats a dumb question but I am kind of a computer "dummy".
thanks so much. My hard drive has VERY little space left on it so I need to transfer ASAP.

I just posted this to another topic, but it applies here as well. Hopefully there's no prohibition on cross-posting on this board, my apologies to all if there is:
"I haven't read the whole thread, so someone could have already mentioned this, but I did the same thing, move my music library to an external drive. The Help articles are helpful, but only up to a point. When that didn't work, I called up AppleCare support up, and they took me through all the standard steps, and got stumped at the same point I did. Finally she suggested trying something, and that ended up doing the trick. So here in brief is what you do:
    1) Copy over your "iTunes Music" folder to the external hard drive
    2) Go into Advanced preferences to have iTunes look for the "iTunes Music" folder in the new location. If you're like me, your music won't appear in the Library.
    3) In iTunes, go to the Library window (which is probably blank), then in a Finder window, find the icon for the "iTunes Music" folder in the new location. Drag that icon onto the Library window.
You should now see a progress window pop up showing all the songs that it's populating the Library window with."

  • How best to transfer iPhoto Library from old Mac to new Mac

I've just taken delivery of a gleaming new 17inch iMac. (I'm very proud!)
I have an old G3 iMac with approx 1000 photo's on iPhoto. (Not sure which version but that Mac is still running OSX 10.1.5 so it's a fairly early version).
What is the best way to transfer the photo's across? I'd like to keep the album structure in place if possible.
I'm fairly sure I can do this by connecting the macs with an ethernet cable but I haven't got a clue how to do it!
Thanks in advance for any help.

Given that you've already started using the iPhoto on the new machine then yes, copying the iPhoto Library Folder from the external HD will certainly affect things. If you copy it to the default location in your Pictures Folder it will overwrite the new one.
So, now you now have two libraries and you want to merge them. How much effort have you put into the new one? If it's only a roll or two you could simply take the rolls out of the NEW iPhoto Library Folder / Originals, then copy the OLD one over - letting it over write, then import the NEW photos.
If you have a lot of work, you can merge the two libraries. For that, you'll need iPhoto Library Manager

ps - it is quite easy to do... until you create a second library.
