How do I transfer mail folders

I used migration assistant to transfer from my old iMac to my new iMac 27 2012. Everything transferred over except my mail folders (personal folders) and old email. How do i transfer them?

It should have worked, but if everything else transferred successfully then just drag your Mail folder from the old iMac. Its location is ~/Library/Mail/
Quit Mail on the new Mac. Then drag the entire folder from the old Mac to the same location on your new one.
Copy Mail's Preferences file also. Its location is ~/Library/Mail/com.apple.mail.plist
Drag it to the corresponding location on the new Mac.
In each case, overwrite the existing location's contents.
This will probably be easier than running Migration Assistant all over again, which as I say should have worked seamlessly.
The first time you launch Mail it will need to import your Mail messages, which will take an amount of time proportional to the number of Mail messages in the folder.

Hi sanjampet, that didn't work for me. I disabled my five email accounts, which made the emails dissappear, all mail folders were still visible, I closed the program. I reopened the program, re-enabled the email accounts, and all the same folders were all still visible - not in alphabetical order, so frustrating. One would think apple would have a simple button that could be clicked to put mail box folders into order? Drag and drop is too difficult for me too due to the number of mailboxes. Any other thoughts?

The easiest way to accomplish this is to *create a new admin account* in the System Preferences/Accounts Pref Pane. Once the new admin account *(make sure the Allow user to administer this computer is checked in the new account)* is set up and performing like it should (by logging into it and verifying that you can actually administer the computer), change your primary account (the account that owns your emails) to a standard account by un-checking the *Allow user to administer this computer* in the Accounts Pref Pane. You can still administer the computer with your standard account, you will have to provide your admin login and password in the Authentication dialog boxes.

Transfer mail folders from OE 4.5

I need to transfer mail folders and contacts from an old iMac (OS 8.5) using Outlook Express 4.5 to a brand new Intel iMac (OS X 10.4) using Mail. I found lots of suggestions on the internet for transferring from a PC to Mail, but not an old iMac.
I also exported the contacts from OE but when I imported them into Address Book, it only brought the names across and no other information, like e-mail addresses.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Alternatively, for each user, copy the /Users/username/Library/Mail folder from the Lion machine to the MBP. Launch Mail on the new machine and Mail will uodate the folder. Note that you can't go the other way. I do this routinely copying Mail from my primary SL volume to the Mtn Lion and Mavs volumes.

I misread your post. You can't transfer items to iTunes without connection to your computer. To transfer without synching, make sure you don't have your preferences in iTunes set to automatically synch. Then when you connect your phone but before you synch, in iTunes File>Transfer purchases. Note that only iTunes purchased media can be transferred this way.

Is your email account an IMAP account? If not, the folders will not sync.
If your email account is a POP account, you can create folders and mailboxes in the Mac mail app and those folders will be for local storage and organization on the Mac only. That is a feature of the Mac mail software. Those folders/mailboxes will not sync if you do not have an IMAP account.

How do I transfer some photos from an external harddrive (with backup data from one macbook) to another macbook? Ideally, I'd also like to transfer albums as well that photos are linked to. Thank you very much Terence for your input. I successfully transferred the library and attempted to open it on my "new" mac. However, unfortunately, I discovered the OS and iphoto have not been updated for some time so it couldn't open..argh.
My photos were in a 9.4.3 version of iPhoto, so it looks like to get that on this new computer I have to upgrade to snow leopard and then to Lion (not wanting to go all the way up in OS necessarily if it will slow my computer down more). However, is there a way to open a version 9.4.3 library on an iPhoto app from snow leopard?

How to Import Apple Mail Folders on Second User Account

I purchased a new MBP after the old one failed. At the Apple Store I set up a User ID for the new MBP. I then used the Migration utility later on to bring in all my data from my late MBP. This included all my Mail folders. Now I want to get a selection of those Mail Folders to the New User ID. I have tried exporting a folder to a USB flash drive, told Apple Mail to import it in the new ID but without success. Is there another way to get the selected mail folders over to the new ID? Currently I have way too much mail on the old migrated ID. I have been running DupeZap to try and reduce the duplicate messages but that's another story. I just want to get the good folders (no duplicates) over to the new User ID. I seem to recall that back with Tiger you could use a drop box or public folder to pull files/data from one user ID to another. Is this still possible or is there another option I can try?

If both system are using the IMAP mail provider all you have to do is setup the connection to the mail server and all the emails and folders will be copied down to the windows computer. That is what IMAP is for. The mail stays on the server, and can be store
on the local computer also, and when you connect to the server with another device, computer, phone or pad, all the mail with folders gets copied to the other device.
But I think some of your mail was gotten using POP so it is not longer on the server.
Or you have emails in local folder only and they would be on the server. But you can create folder on the server in one mail program, or on the mail web interface and then copy those emails into those folder on the server byt copying them in one of the email
programs. Then when you log on with the other device all of them will be downloaded to the other device.

I got the drive back and all my data is available but now i want to copy or import it back to my computer the same way that iwas earlier in the form of folders. I dont know how to do it. How do I remove mail folders from "On My Mac?"

I believe my problem is related to Mavericks. 10.9.2. Using Apple Mail and a Gmail account.
I am repeatedly being asked to re enter a password for a Gmail account, so I deleted the Gmail account on all Apple devices (at least I think I did).
So I continue to be hassled for a password to this Gmail account when I open Mail, even though the Gmail account does not appear in my System Settings or under Accounts in Mail.
I do see folders for this same Gmail account in Mail, under the heading "On My Mac."
Do I need to delete these folders as well? If so, how?
Ultimately I would like to reinstall the Gmail account. But I really believe I need to compeltely delete it from my Mac, so Mail will accept the stored password. Tell me if I am wrong.

To delete, select it, and then go to Mail/Mailbox/Delete Mailbox.
Try deleting your Gmail password from Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access. Then run Keychain First Aid and try resetting the original keychain.

How do I transfer files/folders to an external hard drive without "dragging and dropping"?

Hi, I'm having a lot of trouble trying to transfer folders of pictures and individual pictures to my external hard drive (which God forbid isn't an Apple product). I attempted to drag and drop, which usually works. I have also attempted to find an option in any drop down menu which will allow me to import/transfer/etc. the photos from my Macbook to the external hard drive. This is maddening because the hard drive was immediately compatible and I can see everything that's on it already, I just can't really do anything with the content going either way. Is it because I need to compress things? Something like that? Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

In iPhoto, Select All the Photos you want to move... Then Goto... > File > Export >
Choose the settings as seen here
Click Export and select your External Drive
Best to create a Folder to put them in... and away you go...
