How do i transfer my external iPhoto library to another mac

On one of my mac June of 2008 imac's i have redirected my iphoto library to function on an external hard drive. Recently my imac crashed and died, fortunatley i was able to purchase a new mac a week ago. What im looking to do is upload my entire iphoto 11 on the new mac with all the same data, e.g. Labeled events as well as correct dates. Can any one please help!

If all you are trying to do is access the iPhoto library on your external HDD on a new computer.
Plug in the drive
hold the option key while you double click the iPhoto icon
a window will appear that asks you which library to load
if the library is not listed, click the "other library" and find the library on the external drive (The library is just one file)
Select the library and click open
Your library will now load and be the default library on your new Mac

Use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  or select s and export (file menu ==> export) to a desk top folder - see Exporting From iPhoto for details on export options - move that folder to the other Mac and import to iPhoto there

  • How do I transfer photos from 'iPhoto Library' to external HD?

Hello everyone.  I have an iPhoto back up question for you all.  I've recently had severe troubles with my 2010 21.5 inch iMac.  After an OSX update, the system suffered all kinds of problems, and I am unable to even open the majority of my apps without getting error messages.  Something is seriously wrong - possibly with the physical HD.  In any case, I am attempting a clean install of OSX to fix the issue.
I'm in the process of transferring all of my important files to an external drive so I can migrate them to the clean OSX.  However as you're all aware iPhoto likes to make this difficult.  Just to clear this up right now, I CANNOT open iPhoto, so I must do this through the iPhoto Library package.  That is the ONLY option.
Anyway, I've viewed the package contents, and I notice two folders, one 'Originals' and the other 'Modified'.  There is also a data folder, but it is my understanding it is just thumbnails.  In the past, like when I bought this iMac and needed to move the files from my old iMac, I just copied a folder from my iPhoto library in Finder and dragged it into the iPhoto window on the new computer, and all my photos were loaded.  The file structure must be different now though, because I don't remember 2 folders.  I presume one contains modified versions of photos, or worse yet, the data for a single picture is split between them.
Which folder should I transfer to my external HD?  Or should I move both?  And will I still be able to just drag the folders into the iPhoto program?  I will be reinstalling to Snow Leapord.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

No.  Case sensitive can cause problems.  Reformat it as shown below:
Also once you change the location of the library you should launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select the library in it's new location.  Just clicking on the library on the EHD will open the last opened library which will be the one in your Pictures folder.

  • How do I transfer all my iPhoto library to an external drive without losing the organising

My iMac's internal drive is almost full - mainly with 25,000 photos accumulated over the last 10 years. These are carefully sorted into Events, Smart Albums, etc., and given titles, ratings, etc.
As my iMac is becoming rather 'clunky' with little space left, I want to transfer most or all of my iPhoto library onto a newly purchased 1TB external hard drive to be used just for photos / movies.
I already have another external hard drive linked to Time Machine backing up everything on the iMac.
I followed Apple's support team's instruction to create iPhoto on the new external hard drive (My Passport) - and then drag and drop the existing iPhoto library onto it from the Master file.
It's successfully copied all 25,000 photos into the new iPhoto library on My Passport, but I'm dismayed to find that all the original events, titles, etc. are now all shuffled up and haphazard, with all titles, grading, etc. apparently gone.
Fortunately I haven't yet started to delete the photos on the original Iphoto library on my internal hard drive .................. but surely there's a way to 'back up' my iPhoto library without losing all the hard work I've put into the organising & editing ............isn't there ???
    What am I doing wrong?

I followed Apple's support team's instruction to create iPhoto on the new external hard drive (My Passport) - and then drag and drop the existing iPhoto library onto it from the Master file.
Don't know who told you that but it would be difficult to be more wrong.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How do I transfer itunes from one library to another on two different PC's?

I have an ipod mini and have an itunes library on my home pc as well as my work pc. How can I transfer itunes from one to the other and keep them in synch?

There is no simple way to do it, as itunes wont let you use it on another computer without wiping the contents first.
    However if you really want to transfer songs to another computer then you could try this;
    * make sure that your ipod is accessible as a disk drive (ipod options)
    * when you plug your ipod into the computer you want to transfer to make sure you select "no" or "cancel" when it asks to wipe the contents. Leave the ipod connected and quit from itunes.
    * go to "my computer" and access the ipod directly. You probably have to select "view hidden files" from windows. You will see a lot of folders with odd names like ZX838aff with similar named files inside.
    * copy these files to a folder on your computers hardrive. Now remove the ipod and start itunes.
    * import the files from the folder you made in the last step.
    * Now your music is on itunes, but with unrecogisable names.
This is the only way I have found to do it, but there may be another way, say with an application to do the hard work for you.

  • How do I transfer ratings from one library to another library?

My home iTunes Library has 37,000+ songs, with 3/4 of them rated. I have a much smaller library at work, which is mostly a subset of my home library. As I rate my home library, I have been transfering my ratings by making a .pdf of newly rated tunes and adding the ratings to my work library. Since my latest iTunes update I am no longer able to do this. I can save the playlist as a .pdf, but it has a blank column for ratings.
Is there an easier way to get my ratings from home to work?

  • Help. Why can't I move an iPhoto library to another Mac.

Help. This should be a simple thing to do but I can't make it work.  While on vacation in Europe, I created a new iPhoto library on my MacBook Pro for my son to load his photos into - all worked well, his library is 1.44 Gbytes. We live in different states and now I'm trying to get his iPhoto library to him so he can load it into his computer. Because of it's size (1G limit), I can't use my MobileMe Public folder so I'm trying to put it onto a Flash drive so I can send that to him. (I even split the library into multiples to get under the 1G public folder limit but when I try to upload to the Public folder I always get a Public folder upload error message. Maybe there's a reason that the iPhoto library file can't be moved this way.)
Anyway, I reformatted the Flash drive for Mac Journaled and moved the iPhoto library onto it.  Then I plugged the Flash drive into my iMac to make sure all is okay. When I try to open the iPhoto library on my iMac (holding the Option key), I get this error message:  "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.  You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."
The error message is incorrect, I have iPhoto '09 Version 8.1.2 (424) on both my MacBook Pro and my IMac.
Anyone know what's happening here and how to make this simple transfer work?

You'll get that message in error with a corrupted database sometimes.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Copying iPhoto Library to another Mac

I tried to copying my (12 GB) iPhoto Library folder from my 27 inch iMac to an external hard disc to use same library in my 15 inch MacBook Pro for many times but a message telling me that the file is to large to be transferred to my external HDD.
anyone another way to do so, please tell me.
    Thank you,,,

You would reformat the drive with Disk Utility. It needs to be Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Note that reformatting will erase the drive, so back up first. Also, WIndow machines will not be able to read the drive afterwards.

  • How do I transfer songs from one library to another library?

I recently added a new library, so me and my sister can keep our music & stuff seperate, since we each have our own iPod. I want to get her songs off of my library, and put it in her library. How do I do this?

You can use a feature called Home Sharing in iTunes. You just need an iTunes store account and you can use that account to share songs between different computers, and thus libraries.

  • How do I transfer tunes from one library to another

I'm trying to put some of the less played tunes in my iTunes library in a second library I've created. I haven't found any obvious means of transferring them from one library to the other, or any instructions on how to do it. Can someone help?

Just select the few you want to import. When you choose that option from the Add to Library selection, navigate to your original iTunes Library (its default location is ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music) then select each individual song or artist you want to add to the new Library.
This assumes you have the following two options chosen in iTunes Preferences > Advanced:

  • How do I transfer my copy of Mainstage to another Mac?

I bought MainStage from Apple last year and ran it for live purposes on  my MacBook Pro, but I want to use it on my Mac 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Mac Pro now.
I can't find an "installer" on the MacBook Pro… just the application file itself and when I copy it over to the Mac Pro (tower) it won't launch as it says it's 'incomplete' or 'damaged'.
Can anyone recommend a way to move the prgramme across?

Did you purchase it from the App Store?  If so log into the App Store with the same Apple ID you used to purchase it previously, go to the Purfhases section and look for it there.  You should be able to download and install again.

  • How can I transfer my iphoto library from a Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) harddrive to a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) hard drive?

    Community,
Every time I try to transfer my iphoto library from a Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) harddrive to a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) hard drive, I receive the attached message: "You can't copy 'iPhoto Library' because it has the same name as another ideon on the destination volume, and that volume doesn't destinguish between upper- and lowercase letters in filenames."
My theory is, if I am able to unpackage my iphoto library, I can transfer each folder one at a time so that I can trouble shoot any "duplicates." Will this work?
Let's say that works. How can I repackage the library so iphoto recognizes it?
    Is there a better way?
    Thank you,
    Jonathan

Can we assume that I don't have any naming conflicts? Clearly there are or else I wouldn't get the error I'm getting.
The error doesn't mean you have name conflicts. It means that the Finder won't take the chance that you might have them.
You're suggesting that all I would need to do would be to use Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer the files from the case-sensative harddrive to my Extended Journaled harddrive?
Yes. But I would just use the built-in rsync shell command. First, back up all data if you haven't already done so. Launch the Terminal application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press the space bar:
    rsync -aE --delete
Now drag the iPhoto library you want to copy into the window. You should have something like this:
    rsync -aE --delete /Users/you/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library
Drag the Pictures folder on the destination volume into the window. Now you have this (line will wrap on the page):
rsync -aE --delete /Users/you/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library /Volumes/something/Users/you/Pictures
Press return. The copying operation will start. When it finishes, you'll see a new dollar-sign ("$") prompt below what you entered. If there were no errors, you're done.
