How do I transfer my itunes library to my new laptop?

I'm sure this is really basic but I don't know how to do it. I don't have a home network either.

    You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

  • How do I transfer my itunes library to a new computer?

How do I transfer my itunes library from my old computer to my new computer?  My current computer is crashing and I need to buy a new one.  I have all of the libraries backed up on each of my devices, but I don't think I can simply sync the devices to my new computer's blank itunes' library, correct?  Thanks in advance for any help.

You need to copy iTunes folder from your old computer to the new one.

  • How do I transfer my iTunes library to a new computer?  I have transferred purchased music but wish to transfer the rest of my library.  Home sharing isn't responding and the computers are going to be in different locations.

How do I transfer my iTunes library from my old computer to my new one?  I have successfully transferred purchased music but not my library of CDs.  Home sharing will not work, and isn't working in fact, as the computers will be in different countries.

Assuming your library is in the default location and all of the media is stored within the library's media folder then this is what you need to do:
Copy the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> on the source computer to <User's Music> on the target computer.
You can do this directly over a network (making use of shared network folders) or by making a copy on an external drive, moving the drive between computers, and copying again. Any way that works is good. However if you say that you cannot use Home Sharing (doesn't work properly anyway) because the source and target are not on the same network then method 2 as I describe it won't work either.
Your playlists, play counts, ratings etc. are stored inside the database iTunes Library.itl which is inside the iTunes folder and a successful migration includes all of this information, not just the media files. I recommend method 1 from the earlier link as it sets you up with a backup mechanism to use in future. All hard drives fail eventually and often without warning, or at least a warning that is noticed and then heeded.
If the initial assumption is wrong, or you need help checking, just ask.

  • How do I transfer my iTunes Library to my new Mac while keeping all of my playlists/settings??

I recently bought a new MacBook and have had a very hard time trying to transfer my iTunes Library because I can't figure out how to do so without losing all of the specific info/settings! Is there any way to transfer my iTunes library so it appears on my new Mac exactly as it did on my old one? For example, checked and unchecked songs, my playlists, the date added/play count/etc information on songs. I can copy the entire iTunes library with a shared file, but then I lose that information. Please help!

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • How do I transfer my iTunes library to a new PC?

I have been using an ipod for many years now & have built up my library a lot, including all the records of how many times each song has been played.  My PC now though is dying and runs very slow
I have a new, much quicker laptop now and am keen to transfer all of my music across; however I want to retain the playlists and the song records when I do.  Can anyone give me a tip as to how to correctly transfer the media file across to the laptop so that I can keep all of the data?
I thought I remember once seeing a recommendation that this works if all of the files on the new PC have exactly the same file address & name as on the old one - is this true?
    cheers

Ok so I have used the tutorial to copy my entire itunes folder onto my external hard drive, and then back again onto my new laptop. So far so good
but when I then start up iTunes, it is not reading the media file, or finding the music, & the library is empty. I am checking the file location in the Preferences section & it seems to be correct, but it is still missing the link.  Any suggestions?
    thanks

I have an iPhone 4, and iPad 1 and an iPod. I have used iTunes via a Pc. I have just purchased an iMac. How do I get my iTunes library from my old Pc to my new iMac?

Please read Move an iTunes library from a PC to Mac (and back) for instructions. However before using this method you may want to use Setup Assistant, there may be other information you want to migrate over too. Here is Pondini's guide to using Setup Assistant, I'd strongly recommend using it!!

  • How do i transfer my itunes library onto my new computer, when on the old computer I have all the songs saved onto an external hard drive, which I still wish to use?

At the moment on my old latop I have an external hard drive with all my songs on.  I need to attach the hard drive before the songs will play.  Any new songs are downloaded onto the external hard drive.
How can I get the same set up on my new laptop?

When I have held the shift key down & clicked on the iTunes library that was shown on the external hard drive, it has loaded most of the older albums, however there are several albums which have not appeared on iTunes on the new laptop, but if you go into explorer and look at the folders/files on the hard drive, they do appear on the external hard drive.
I have also noticed my play lists and genres have not shown as they were on the old laptop.
Is there any way of getting a complete copy of all songs, play lists, etc. so that is does not require to hold files in two difference places, I would prefer if all the files were on the external hard drive, so I do not fill the internal hard drive with songs?

*1 = what do I need to do once I have a new PC up & running? If i just download Itunes will all my exsisting Libriray still be there?*
You'll have to move your music and library from the old computer. The iTunes library is a database that links to the songs on your hard drive, neither the library files or the songs will get to your new computer just by installing iTunes.
*2 = Also I have purchased some videos, How can I save them on external drive or cds?*
Have a look at this article: iTunes for Windows: How to copy purchases between authorized computers
Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your new computer is to network it with the old one and copy your iTunes folder across. This works fine if you have been using iTunes to completely manage your music and all your songs are in iTunes Music not in different folders. You can also use this method with an external hard drive, you drag the folder from the old computer to the external drive and then from the drive to the new computer. If the songs in your library are not all in the iTunes Music folder you can consolidate them. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Windows
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\. Everything has to be exactly the same on the new computer including the Windows user account name. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
If you have an iPod it can be used as an external drive and you can move the iTunes folder onto it: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
Don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play your iTunes purchases. Also if you are disposing of the old one remember to deauthorise it so you don't use up one of your allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation
