How do I transfer only part of my library to a new MBP?

My son just got a new MBP for college. What is the best way to transfer *only his music and playlists* to his new MBP?

The portable Firewire drive is probably a faster option.
If playcounts, etc are important to him or if you want to try and do this with the least amount of work on your part, I would plug in the portable drive to your computer and drag & drop your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes Music folder you find inside the iTunes folder) to the external drive and copy the entire thing.
Now take he drive and plug it into his new Mac. Again, drag & drop your iTunes folder to his Mac's internal drive and copy the entire thing. I would use the default location of his user account -> Music folder.
If he opens iTunes now it should read the entire library in and will appear just like it does on your computer. If not you can force iTunes to see it by opening iTunes with these instructions and pointing it to the newly copies in library...
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one

At this point he has everything and now to get rid of yoru stuff and free up his hard drive, he can simply start deleting everything out of the library he is not interested in. Let him do all the work there.
All playlists, playcounts, ratings, etc. are all preserved and you only had to do two things, copy that folder twice.
Let me know if the above presents an issue and we need to do it a different way.
regards,
Patrick

  • How to transfer only part of iTunes library?

I have over 80GB of music (mainly classical) in my iTunes library and I am using it with my iPod classic. I am planning to buy now a new 16GB iPod nano and my question is how I can transfer only selected pieces of music (all library will not fit anyway)and how to maintain transfer process in future when I want to change the music on my nano.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hello,
in fact, it's boring defining playlists, so I use a trick : in itunes, just use a new field (like "comments") to tag specific songs (type "nn" for newnano). Then create for exemple a smart playlist "nano 80's" with the caracteristics : year is between 1980 and 1990, comments contains "nn". and another playlist "new added songs" = songs added during the last 3 months, and comments contains "nn"...!
This looks boring but it is very efficient to manage multiple playlists, multiples ipods, with only one new tag on itunes.
you just have to sync your smart playlists.

    that's what playlists are for.

add/delete track to/from the playlist you sync to your device.

  • With 2 devices, how do I sync only part of the library on one device? That is, sync only music and not the podcasts.

Trying to sync part of a library on one device and all of the library on another. Not finding any options to select only parts of a library to be sync'ed. Any help appreciated.

In ipod menu in iTunes, tick the "manually manage music and videos" then select the items that you want to sync. Cheers!

  • How do you transfer pictures from old iphoto library to a new one?

So my iphoto wasn't working, did the whole delete the plist and make a new library pressing "alt". But now i want to know how i can transfer all my photos into the new library, or some how fix the old library (because i really don't wanna move everything into a new library).
    please someone help me,

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • How can I transfer only part of a playlist to iPod?

This new iTunes is a nightmare.  Because the **** iPod touch is only 16GB, I want to transfer PART of several playlists to the iPod.  I do not want to delete songs from my Library permanently, I only want to have the same playlists on my iPod as I have in iTunes, but reduced versions of them because of the size limitation.  I also want to jkeep the same basic playlist structure as my overall library, but only a portion of each playlist will end up on the iPod.  In previous versions of iTunes, I could drag an entire palylist to the iPod, then I could go in and delete songs or albums from the iPod in order to fit other playlists.  This version will not let me do that.  Please help!

What exactly is the nightmare part? Playlists are the same as they've always been.
Perhaps one idea, after we find out exactly what the issue is that you are having, is to create Smart Playlists, and use those to Sync to your iPod.
With a Smart Playlist, you set rules. You could create a Smart Playlist that looks at you first Playlist, but only includes songs that haven't been played for a while. So after a song has been played, it is removed from the Playlist and only put back again after x weeks, or x months, according to your preferences and the size of the Playlist.
All that happens automatically, at Sync time. So after setting them up, you don't have to do anything except Sync the iPod every now and again, and possibly modify the rules if you find the list is still too large, or now not large enough.

  • How can I download only part of my library?

I've started purchasing movies to stream to my television through AppleTV, but I'm running out of space on my MacBook Pro. I'm considering buying a Mac Mini and running it as part of my entertainment system instead of storing the movies on the laptop. Once that's working, I'd like to remove the movies from the laptop to free up disk space. So--
Is it possible to authorize two machines (laptop, Mac Mini) on an iTunes account but then only download purchases to one or the other? If so, how? In this case, I'd like to download purchased movies to the Mac Mini and music and books to the laptop.
    Thanks.

Create a playlist that is used to sync with the iPhone, and manage its content to use no more than the available device memory.

  • How do I transfer music from a past library to a new one?

I have an Ipad that has music on it from a computer that has died. I want to make sure I keep the music on it when I plug it into my new computer. I wanted to know how to transfer music (not necessarily "purchased"...) from my ipad to my new computer on itunes. Please help.

It should be in your iTunes library.  Sync your iPhone 5 with iTunes to transfer your music to the new phone.

    Hi eannablack,
The only way to export part of a PDF is to remove the pages that you want to export. And to do that, you need Acrobat. You are welcome to try Acrobat for free for 30 days. For more information, see www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html.

  • I am waiting for a new iMac with two drives: SSD   conventional hard drive. How can I transfer only a certain number of applications to the SSD and the rest to the physical hard disk drive?

I am expecting a new iMac (i7 with SSD). How can I transfer only certain applications along with the system, library etc. to this limited (space) HD and other applications to the conventional disk HD in order to save space on the SSD?
    Thank you,

I have the same scenario, using an SSD for my start-up drive. I have copied my Applications folder to a mechanical hard drive and created symbolic link to it. The symbolic link resides on the SSD and works properly.
That may not be the best solution.  Many updaters expect apps, especially Apple apps, to be in the  /Applications folder on the OSX drive;  if there are updates, the apps may not be found, thus may not be updated.  I don't know if the installers/updaters will follow a symbolic link or not.
DItto some apps, especially Adobe apps, won't even work if they're anywhere else.  Again, I don't know if they'll follow a symbolic link, either.
